A Message from Rabbi Schiftan... Tikkun Olam: A New Year Focused on Repairing the World This year, for the first time, the theme of our Religious School (Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World) will also be the theme of learning and living for The Temple community as a whole. During the High Holy Days, we will be speaking of the ways in which Judaism, and Reform Jewish values and ethical imperatives, in particular, might address the social justice concerns of our day. We will speak about the needs for repairing the world, and the mending of hearts, both within our Temple family and within the greater world-wide community, as well. As you will read in our High Holy Day handout, the Rabbis are preparing a year-long series of lifelong learning opportunities on the theme of personal and communal ethics and ethical decisionmaking. In our Religious School, every grade in every classroom, in conjunction with our Social Action Committee, will have the chance to engage in a social service opportunity to help address the needs of those in the Nashville community. As you enter The Temple doors during the High Holy Days, you will notice a banner that calls our attention to the plight of those suffering in the Darfur region of Africa. To this end, our Board of Trustees passed a resolution to highlight the particular Jewish concerns regarding the atrocities occurring in that region. Finally, our Caring and Concern Committee, under the direction of its chair, Andrea Kampine, continues to expand and evolve its efforts to repair the lives of those in need within our own synagogue community. May the New Year be one of peace for you and those you love, and may we also use these days to focus our hearts and minds on what we might do to bring peace to this world of ours. Get on Board....... by Gus Kuhn Indeed it is true, the High Holy Days will be occurring again soon! The Temple has been preparing already. Our clergy are putting the finishing touches on their Holiday messages and the staff has met to go over issues from security to air conditioning. Not only are the Holy Days being carefully planned at this time but also the program year ahead. The Temple calendar does seem to flow like an academic calendar. We do present a number of events during the summer but we are much more active September to June. Each year the Religious School identifies a theme to give a center to its educational endeavors. This year the theme is Tikkun Olam, repair of the world. Because Social Justice is for me the heart and soul of Reform Judaism, I asked the rabbis to incorporate it into our overall Temple programming year as a core value to explore. Our clergy will be leading workshop discussions during the year on Ethics and Jewish Values. Our Social Action Committee will continue to expand its good works with various projects. Please look for the Social Action Booklet to be handed out 2 during the High Holy Days, featuring a history of the Social Action issues Temple has dealt with over the years and identifying Social Action opportunities available for our congregants. The Committee will also involve iself with the Religious School s Tikkun Olam projects. Lynda Gutcheon and the Religious School faculty have created projects for each grade. More than simply giving tzedakah, this involvement centers on doing, on action. For example, the 3 rd grade will spend some time working at Second Harvest and will co-sponsor our annual food drive. The 9 th grade will participate in individual projects such as the AIDS walk. Throughout the whole congregation, Tikkun Olam will be explored in many ways: From the large picture needs of involvement in Darfur and social policy concerns in this country to the more everyday issues of treating each other on a personal level with respect and menschlichkeit. I hope you will take this idea to heart and involve yourself in Tikkun Olam this year. In this same spirit of Tikkun Olam, your Board of Trustees unanimously adopted at its July meeting a resolution entitled Raise Awareness of the Genocide in Darfur. I am proud of the Board for doing so and for Rabbi Shana Goldstein s advocacy. The entire resolution was printed in the last Kol Shalom. Please take the time to read it and to become involved in helping to end this horrific and preventable situation. The Temple has been a congregation of doers from its inception 157 years ago. Our intention today is to continue that sacred tradition and to expand upon it. Your Board of Trustees wishes to create many avenues for your personal involvement in areas that give meaning to your life. Please consider active engagement in the life of your Temple community as well as the wider community that exists outside our doors. Find a place to give of your talents. High Holy Day Terms Cheshbon Nefesh: A term that literally means an account of the soul. During the Hebrew month of Elul, the month immediately preceding the Jewish New Year, many Jews take it upon themselves to conduct this inventory of all their actions, thoughts and behaviors during the last year, and contemplate on how to do better next year. The list should contain both times we acted our best, and times we could improve. Tashlich: From the Hebrew meaning to cast away, this is a ceremony where we symbolically cast away our sins into running water, using bread crumbs. Our Tashlich service begins after Rosh HaShanah morning services, as we walk together to our creek to cast away our sins with readings, music and contemplation. Teshuvah: From the Hebrew meaning return or repentance, this concept is at the center of the High Holidays. With contemplation, hard work and sincerity, we can always return to the right path, the right way, even when our actions have led us astray. Admitting our faults and failings, we can begin anew. The ten days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yamei Teshuvah the Ten Days of Repentance. Together with Tefilah (prayer) and Tzedakah (justice, or charity), Teshuvah is a way to achieve the High Holiday blessing for a good, sweet year. Selichot: Literally meaning forgiveness, it is a time intended for self-evaluation and reflection required to fully engage oneself in the High Holidays. We reach out to those we have wronged, intentionally or not, and ask for forgiveness. We also grant forgiveness to those seeking it from us. Our Selichot service and program is the Saturday evening prior to Rosh HaShanah. Shabbat Teshuvah: This is the Shabbat between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. It literally means the Shabbat of Return, or Repentance. Words reflective of the High Holidays are inserted into the prayer service. Kever Avot: Literally, the graves of our ancestors, this is the Cemetery Service between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Judaism reminds us that the introspection that we are required to do cannot be accomplished without looking back to those who have had an effect on determining our lives. Our Cemetery Service is Sunday, September 16 th at The Temple Cemetery. Kol Nidre: Aramaic for all vows, these are the opening words of the formula for the cancellation of vows. It is recited on Yom Kippur eve, set to a haunting melody. As we reflect on past behavior, we understand that sometimes we make personal vows and oaths unwittingly or rashly. This prayer annuls those personal vows for the coming year, even as we still attempt to be more careful of our words and promises made. Yizkor: From the Hebrew meaning remembrance this is part of the Yom Kippur afternoon service when we take time to call to mind those loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose memories and influence remain in our lives. Neilah: Literally meaning to close or lock, this is the name given to the final service on Yom Kippur, immediately after Yizkor. Symbolically, the Book of Life is sealed at this time, as the final blast of the shofar is sounded and the fast is broken. 8

High Holy Days Important Information Parking and Security for the High Holy Days Each year, congregants for High Holy Day services are greeted at The Temple by uniformed officers and professional parking attendants. Security this year will be provided through a combined effort of public and private personnel who are familiar with our Temple buildings and grounds. The usual procedures will be in place for security, traffic control and member safety. Please note the following very important items: 1. LEAVE FOR SERVICES 10-15 MINUTES EARLIER than usual in order to arrive in advance of service time. There are two entrances to The Temple. Drop-off is available at both for those who need it. 2. Overflow parking will be available on the Belle Meade Plantation property. 3. If you park at the Plantation, we ask that you enter by way of The Temple parking lot but exit only from the Belle Meade Plantation exit on Leake Avenue following services. 4. The Temple driveway is "two-way". Please follow the posted signs that will direct you around the building. The traffic controllers will direct you as to where and how to park and exit. Your patience will be greatly appreciated! 5. Additional disabled & elderly parking will be available close to the building. Look for signs. 6. Please remember that our neighbors around us will likely be less critical of the traffic congestion if we park "on" the street rather than "in" their yards and/or driveways. Over the past two years the Belle Meade Police Department has towed cars blocking city traffic during services. BE WARNED, we cannot interupt services to announce imminent towing. Please... Drive Slowly! Do Not Park on the Grass! Please Carpool... Follow Directions! A Reminder About Seating Sanctuary, chapel and auditorium seating will be in place to accommodate over 1,200 members and guests to each of the services for the High Holy Days. As in the past, there are no tickets required for entry into the services, nor is there reserved seating. We ask your cooperation through the direction of the ushers and staff in helping to maintain the dignity and decorum of our services. Please help them by adhering to a few simple but VERY IMPORTANT RULES: 1. YOU MAY NOT SAVE SEATS IN THE SANCTUARY except for the driver while he/she is parking. If you wish to sit together, you may gather in the foyer and enter together or you may save a few seats in the chapel or auditorium. 2. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE EMPTY SPACES BETWEEN YOU AND THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU! It is critical that we fill ALL available seating so that everyone who wants to attend can be accommodated. 3. A special seating section will be available for the convenience of persons with physical disabilities. 4. NO ONE MAY ENTER THE SANCTUARY, CHAPEL OR AUDITORIUM WHENTHE CONGREGATION IS STANDING. The ushers and staff know when to seat latecomers. Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress. 5. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERSWHILE WAITING IN THE FOYER PRIOR TO THE START OF THE NEXT SERVICE. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. The noise from those waiting can easily be heard in the sanctuary. The speakers in the foyer area will enable you to listen to services in progress. 6. So that everyone is assured of having a PRAYERBOOK, kindly return yours to the ushers and staff in the lobby at the end of the service. If you own a copy of the Gates of Repentance prayerbook, we encourage you to bring it. Some people find the temperature in the sanctuary can fluctuate during services. We recommend you bring a wrap or other garment to insure your comfort throughout services. 9

Babysitting for the High Holy Days The Temple will offer High Holy Days babysitting services for Temple members for children up to age 7. Our goal is to provide the kind of care you expect for your children. To do so, we need your cooperation. The size of our membership and the increased demand for this service, as well as our desire to provide well-organized, safe care for the children, require that the following procedures be followed: 1. Parents must be attending services in The Temple building. 2. Babysitting is by reservation only (the deadline for Rosh Hashanah is September 5 th and the deadline for Yom Kippur is September 14 th ) please, no exceptions! Children arriving without a reservation will not be able to remain in the babysitting area. Reservations may be made by calling 356-8009 or emailing ehull@templenashville.org (we will need to know the ages of your children and the services you will be attending). Temple's High Holy Day Food Drive Again this year, The Temple will hold its annual High Holydays Food Drive for Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Grocery bags will be distributed on Rosh Hashanah and food should be brought to The Temple on Yom Kippur. Please place your donations on your car trunk or beside your car and we will pick them up. Spectacular Selichot Opportunity at The Temple Please join us for a special Selichot opportunity on Saturday September 8 th beginning at 7:00 pm Our traditional Selichot service will begin at 9:00 p.m. The day I forgave the Nazis, privately I forgave my parents whom I hated all my life for not having saved me from Auschwitz. Children expect their parents to protect them, mine couldn t. And then I forgave myself for hating my parents. Forgiveness is really nothing more than an act of self-healing and self-empowerment. I call it a miracle medicine. It is free, it works and has no side effects. I believe with every fiber of my being that every human being has the right to live without the pain of the past. For most people there is a big obstacle to forgiveness because society expects revenge. It seems we need to honour our victims but I always wonder if my dead loved ones would want me to live with pain and anger until the end of my life. Some survivors do not want to let go of the pain. They call me a traitor and accuse me of talking in their name. I have never done this. Forgiveness is as personal as chemotherapy I do it for myself....
