From the rabbi s Desk We and our families are often most vulnerable in life when we are lulled into a false sense of security. There was a robbery on the circle this week. A member of our BRS family was violated when thieves broke into their home and took their property. I share this with you not to cause alarm or panic, but rather to serve as a harsh reminder of the importance of our remaining vigilant and aware. You see, too many of us like to believe that by living on Montoya Circle we are safe and secure, immune and protected from the threats and dangers that loom in society at large. While there is no doubt that we are blessed to live in a wonderful, close knit neighborhood, it is a mistake to think that the circle is a protective cocoon or bubble. Please remember to lock your doors and windows regularly and take nothing for granted. Undoubtedly, you have been following the scandal this week at the Penn State University in which a former football coach, Jerry Sandusky has been implicated by a grand jury for abusing young boys whom he had lured to the campus as part of a non-profit program he began. His boss was the revered football coaching legend Joe Paterno who has been at the school for more than six decades. When a witness saw an abusive act taking place and Paterno became aware, he reported it to the Athletic Director but absolutely nothing further was done. Nothing was reported to the authorities and many more children suffered horribly as a result. Paterno and the University President have been let go, but the damage has been done. As great a football coach as Paterno was, tragically he will likely be remembered more for allowing a dangerous threat to remain in his program, more than for anything he accomplished on the field. The truth is, some of the greatest threats exist where and from whom we least expect them and that is why we must remain vigilant. Indeed, we and our families are often most vulnerable in life when we are lulled into a false sense of security and let down our guard. Vigilance, caution and awareness are not only true to prevent theft and abuse, they are critically important in protecting our families from the spiritual threats that loom as well. As committed as we are towards Outreach and to the value of diversity, our children need us to be more discerning and judicious in the spiritual influences, places and people we bring into their lives. In this week s parsha, our great matriarch Sarah, the same woman who so selflessly awarded Avraham a concubine so that he could father a child, asked Avraham to have that child removed from the home when she perceived him as a spiritual threat to her precious Yitzchak. I am not suggesting we exile our own children, but I am encouraging being more discriminatory in what we let our kids watch, listen to, attend, and participate in. Let us remain watchful and cautious when it comes to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of our families and with God s help merit to live with peace, security and great spiritual growth. Follow the Rabbi at twitter.com/rabbigoldberg brs Outreach Revolution This past week, we kicked off another semester of Boca Raton Jewish Experience classes at BRS. All of the classes were packed with people who were eager to take their first classes this year. I can t even begin to tell you the joy and excitement that everyone felt when they left each of the courses. Whether they decided to take a class to learn how to read Hebrew for the first time in their life or Basic Judaism or Jewish Spirituality or Jewish History, the important thing to remember is that, for many of the participants, this was an important step of their personal Jewish journey. The other important point I want you to know is that, for the first time since we started this program, I wasn t the only teacher. I am a big believer that everyone in our Shul can and should be an active participant in the BRS Outreach Revolution. Each of you has so much to offer and you can really inspire someone else! Some of you are great at hosting people for Shabbat and others might enjoy learning one on one in our Partners in Torah program. Yet, there are other members taking the leap to teach a new class at the BRJE. I am so thankful to Eli Katz and Anne Deaktor for making the effort to prepare and teach in our beginner program. Their students told me how much they enjoyed the classes and can t wait for next week. This is only the beginning of this new expanded educational program, I look forward to broadening the topics that are offered and also involving more of the amazing educators in our community. If you would like to suggest a class that you would like to teach, please let me know. Inspire yourself to inspire others Josh Rabbi Josh Broide Veshinantam Levanecha: 22 DAYS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!! parsha summary Avraham Is Visited By Three Angels; The Promise of Yitzchak. Three days after his Bris, three angels appeared. Abraham ran to welcome them and show them hospitality. One of the angels told Abraham that Sarah would give birth to a son in a year. Avraham Intercedes On Behalf of S Dome and Amorah. Before the destruction of S dome and Amorah, Hashem forewarned Avraham. Avraham prayed on the people s behalf. The Angels Arrive in S Dome.. The angels were invited by Lot to stay with him and his family. When word got out, the townspeople gathered around Lot s house and tried to harm the angels. Lot and his Family Leave S Dome; The Cities Are Destroyed. The angels told Lot of Hashem s plan and instructed him to leave with his family. Hashem then destroyed the cities of S dome, Amorah and the entire surrounding plains. When Lot s wife disobeyed the angels warning and looked back, Hashem turned her into a pillar of salt. Avraham and Sarah Travel to Gerar. Abraham and Sarah traveled to Gerar, where Avraham again instructed Sarah to say that she was his sister. Yitzchak is born; Hagar & Yishmael are sent away. As promised, Yitzchak was born to Avraham and Sarah one year later. Avraham circumcised Yitzchak when he was 8-days old. As Yitzchak was growing up, Sarah feared Yishmael s negative influence and urged Avraham to send him and Hagar away. The Akeidah. As the tenth test of his loyalty to Hashem, Hashem instructed Abraham to sacrifice Yitzchak. Abraham found a ram and sacrificed it instead. Rabbi Efrem Goldberg prayer insights by mike senders In the Shachrat service we run across a prayer that reflects God s very deep caring and love for Avraham Avinu. The text reads (Art Scroll pg 76) and God chose Avraham because He found Avraham s heart naemon totally and completely faithful to His values and principles The source of this expression is found in Pirkei Avot where we read asarah nisyonot nisnasah Avraham-that Avraham was put through ten Godly tests and ahmad bechulon and he stood steadfast and successfully through them all. God, as a result, was extremely happy and openly expressed His chiba (his love) for Avraham as is evident in the aforementioned prayer. I think it s important at this point to evaluate the meaning of a Godly test (Nisayon). In our life we are faced daily by tests that are surely directed and caused by God. These tests directed by God occur daily to all of us through a networking of all of society as well as all the physical forces of the natural world. A test of this sort turns into a nisayon when God directs His will toward a special person and places him in a stressful and trying position in order to (according to the Abrabanel) to encourage the person to realize his total personal potential especially in a spiritual sense relating to his allegiance and submission to God. To help us understand this total picture let s evaluate the first and last of the nisyonos for they essentially encompassed the entire life span of Avrohom. The first nisayon to Avraham, worded by God,was Lech Lecha-leave your land, your family, even your fathers house without even my telling you where you were going!! By accepting God s command, Avraham demonstrated to the entire world (in a public way), his deep sense of commitment and obedience to the rulership of God over the entire universe. This prepared Avraham for his challenge to improve mankind as the first step in this awesome mission. The Medrash confirms this and tells us: Sarah began by converting the women, while Avrohom converted the men. On the other hand, the tenth test. the Akeidat Yitzchok,(sacrificing of Yitzchok) shifts the emphasis of Avraham s mandate from a universal direction to a personal one-to prove his willingness to serve God personally and deeply even at the expense of his son Yitzchok s life. Furthermore. in the first Nisayon, the Lech Lecha test, God asked Avraham to cut off, to sever his relationship with his entire PAST (his family, his land) and in a sense go it alone -- while in the last test, the Akeidas Yitzchok (binding of Yitzchak) He was again threatened to lose his family, in this case his son, and with it any possible heir apparent option meaning ANY potential FUTURE legacy that he could hope for!!.the span of the ten nisyonos therefore demanded for Avraham to give up not only his PAST (his family), but his FUTURE (his heir, his son. This scenario identifies exactly the trials of a nisayon. And so, it was after Avraham completed the ten tests that the prayer in the siddur is willing to say, loud and clear--god chose Avraham because God found Avraham s heart Ne amon supremely faithful and loyal to His Kingship.
