St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Sixth Sunday of Easter May 25, 2014, 10:00 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation Richard Proulx Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made: People: Let us rejoice and be glad in it. *Hymn 461 God Is Here! abbot s leigh x *Opening Prayer Fred Cassell Prayer of Confession Almighty God, your word offers freedom from sin, but we confess that we have not obeyed your word. We have harbored malice toward our enemies; we have been deceitful in our relationships; we have been insincere in our commitments; through gossip we have slandered our friends. Forgive us our sins and lead us to genuine repentance. Help your children long for your pure, spiritual milk that we may grow into the joy of salvation through Jesus Christ. Amen. (silent confession) Kyrie (Hymnal No. 565) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Declaration of Pardon Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Call to Faithfulness Leader: As God s own people, be merciful in action, kindly in heart, humble in mind. Be always ready to forgive as freely as God has forgiven you. And, above everything else, be loving, and never forget to be thankful for what Christ has done for you. *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Sermon Chosen and Precious Lisa Patterson Responding to God s Word *Apostles Creed (unison) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *Hymn 416 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation westminster abbey Moment for Mission Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Offertory Solo Come, Ye Blessed John Prindle Scott Caitlin McCarville, soprano *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *Hymn 562 eternal Father, Strong to Save melita Benediction *Postlude Eternal Father Strong to Save Wayne L. Wold *Those who are able are asked to stand. x Latecomers may be seated. The flowers in the chancel are given to the glory of God and in honor of the birthday of Catherine Mitchell by her children. Abigail Lewis is serving in worship today as the acolyte. Next Sunday the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be received by intinction at the 10:00am service. Welcome! We are delighted that you have joined us for worship today and pray that you experience the presence of Jesus Christ in our midst. For more information about St. Andrew and our ministry together, please stop by the Visitor s Welcome Center in the narthex. If you are interested in becoming a member of this congregation, we will gladly provide you with that information. The session, our governing body, will be in the parlor following the 10:00am worship service to receive new members. Meeeting of the Congregation Called for June 1 The Session has called a congregational meeting on Sunday, June 1st, immediately following the 10:00 a.m. worship service. The purpose of the meeting is to review the adequacy of the terms of call for the Associate Pastor for Christian Education and Mission. Change in Summer Coffee Hour Treats What is more Presbyterian than food and lively conversation? Practically nothing! In light of the current budget, we are going to try something new this summer to build fellowship for the coffee hour after Sunday worship. We will need each of you to help make this work! Since we all enjoy good food, each Sunday different groups will provide some treats to share, and you will only have one Sunday to bring something all summer. Some suggestions might be a small fruit tray, a couple dozen cookies or muffins (either homemade or purchased), coffee cakes, pastries, cheeses, breakfast casserole, etc. Just use your imagination! If possible, please use disposable plates/dishes for the treats. If the plate/dish is not disposable, you may pick it up in the Narthex workroom later, so please make sure your name is on it. We will divide the summer dates by alphabet, so note your alphabet letter and put it on your calendar! If you will be gone that week, trade with someone of a different letter or just bring your treat on any other Sunday. It is always welcome! Extras will be frozen for later use and not wasted. Bon appétit!
