Belleville Congregational Church September 2014 News and Views MISSION OF BELLEVILLE CHURCH Centered in the inclusive love of Jesus Christ, we seek to be a welcoming, affirming, and healing congregation. Led by the Holy Spirit, we are inspired to grow and be renewed through our worship, fellowship, Scripture study and the sharing of our gifts. Strengthened by God s love and guidance, we strive to serve with compassion those in need, both near and far. Ponderings 1 Calendar 2 Thrift Shop & Pancake Breakfast 3 Sunday School Registration & Choir 4 Birthdays & Service Club 5 Scripture Readers & Ushers 6 Coffee Hour 7 Contacts 8 Hello Friends, I hope summertime finds you well! I had the joy of singing "Summertime" as part of our "Evening of Song" on August 7 (thanks to all who helped, and sang along, and we did raise a little money for the church). yes, fish are still jumpin', and I hope the warm weather will last at till Columbus Day! AMAZING GRACE! Yes, "Grace abounds" as Paul says. Not only has summertime brought days at the beach, reunions, and juicy, ripe fruit, things at the church have evolved rather nicely as well! Why should I be amazed? Well, pastors can suffer from thinking they have to start or lead everything; yet some vacation weeks always remind us it is not so. Amazing Grace, and Amazing "Work": I come back into town and hear of all the wonderful things that have happened through the initiative and passionate commitment of many who have taken leadership roles! Obviously I would fail if I tried to mention all the wonderful things people have been doing over the summer for the Belleville Community. But a few things really stand out: In and around vacation times, the Music Search Committee, with the help of the Choir spent many hours interviewing candidates and discussing possibilities. We were ultimately unanimous in the decision and new enthusiasm has arisen everywhere as we will welcome Andrea as Minister of Music on Sept 28. At the same time, we continue with our prayers and best wishes for David and his recuperation. Another area of amazing grace and work is with the Stewardship and Finance Board, doing so much background work to finally approve a contract with Verizon. Let's thank the S & F board, they work so incredibly hard and need new members going into the future, as some need respite from this committee that has so much responsibility. The Roots Committee (yes, part church and part greater community) has also worked incredibly hard this summer to come up with an interesting "Line-Up" of concerts for next year, almost completed. Put Saturday, October 11 on your calendar and invite all your friends, because Doug Seegers is another "rising star" who will come to us early in his "new career." He was a homeless "street singer" in Nashville for many years incredibly interesting stories, music and lyrics, as you might imagine! Look him up on You Tube, if you have access. He became #1 in Swedish ratings recently. Last but not least, the Worship and Education Committee in August has been dreaming up all sorts of engaging opportunities; all I can say, is don t miss Sundays in SEPTEMBER! The 7th has a pool party fellowship at Heersinks after worship; The 14th has Sunday School Registration and our wonderful Pancakes made by children and youth; the 21st will be in the Meeting House, for incredible music with guest organist Jorgelina Zeoli, and The 28th will be the "debut" of our choir with the new minister of music, Andrea DeGiovanni. Amazing Grace and Amazing Work at Belleville! Praise be to 1 the re-creating Holy Spirit. Ross

Sunday, September 14 th will be a time to celebrate together the beginning of a new fall term. Our Sunday school is again using The Whole People of God curriculum this year. A take home leaflet will be available for parents and anyone interested in what is going on in Sunday school. We look forward toward a year of growing and learning with our children. On Sunday September 28 th Belleville will welcome Andrea DeGiovanni as Organist & Choir Director. Choir practice, with Andrea, will begin Thursday evening, September 4 th at 7:30pm. All are welcome. Come and lend your voice! Andrea DeGiovanni was born in the Czech Republic and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 13. She graduated top of her class from West Roxbury High School and received a full scholarship to study at Boston University. Andrea graduated from the BU College of Arts with a degree in organ performance. She studied organ with Robert Newman and Max Miller. Upon graduation from BU, Andrea toured Europe visiting many churches and cathedrals to hear as many pipe organs as she could. This trip and her studies have sparked interest in organ building, which brought her to the employ of the Noack Organ Company in Georgetown, Massachusetts in 1993. During her career as organ builder and business manager, she earned a MBA at Salem State College. Andrea is looking forward to playing the Jaeckel organ, built for Belleville s Fiske Chapel 1989, and beginning a children s choir. Andrea lives in Georgetown with her husband Joe and son William. 4
