Our Vision: A world where people experience God s love and are made whole. Our Mission: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. Evensong 16 August 2018 5:15 p.m.

Evensong Thursday in the Twelfth Week after Pentecost 16 August 2018 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16 th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Petit Prélude Joseph Jongen Opening Sentence Preces Officiant Choir The people stand as the procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter Said by the officiant. O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Psalm 33:12-22 Sung by the choir, the people sit. Henry Smart (BCP, p. 626) The Lessons Genesis 15:1-6 The Magnificat The people stand. Thomas Tallis Dorian Service Choir My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: 45 55 Luke 12:32-40 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Tallis Choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 2: 29 32 Homily The people sit. The Rev. Jude Harmon Director of Innovative Ministries The Apostles Creed All The people stand. Sung by all on a monotone. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 2

Officiant Choir The Lord s Prayer The Suffrages The Collects All Officiant Choir The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Prayers Sung by the officiant and choir. Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Sung on a monotone. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by the officiant. Harris Harris Anthem The people sit. Ralph Vaughan Williams Choir The night is come, like to the day, depart not Thou, great God, away. Let not my sins, black as the night, eclipse the luster of Thy light. Keep still in my Horizon; for to me the Sun makes not the day, but Thee. While I do rest, my soul advance; make my sleep a holy trance; that I may, my rest being wrought, awake into some holy thought; and with as active vigour run my course as doth the nimble sun. And thus assured, behold I lie securely, or to awake or die, these are my drowsie days; in vain I do now wake to sleep again: O come that hour, when I shall never sleep again, but wake for ever. Sir Thomas Browne 3

Closing Prayers The people may kneel. The Rev. Eric Metoyer Associate for Congregational Ministries Hymn 343 Sung by all, standing. An offering is received. St. Agnes text: James Montgomery (1771-1854), alt.; music: Melody by John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876); harm. Richard Proulx (b.1937), after John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) Voluntary Praeludium BuxWV 152 Dietrich Buxtehude 4

The Readings Genesis 15:1-6 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great. But Abram said, O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir. But the word of the Lord came to him, This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir. He brought him outside and said, Look towards heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. Then he said to him, So shall your descendants be. And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Luke 12:32-40 Jesus said to his disciples, Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Serving the Assembly Officiant Homilist Prayers Musicians The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean The Rev.
