CRANSFORD NEWS The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us, and memories of hot summer days fade There were quite a few. Holidays are over, and we can look forward to a busy autumn. On the 2nd September the annual churchyard cutting took place All the grass around the tombstones was trimmed, and much needed expert pruning of the cherry trees and yews lining the church path. Many thanks to those who gave us the time on that Saturday afternoon. The church was full for the Harvest Festival on the 10th September, and for once the combines had finished their labours and newly turned earth has appeared in surrounding fields. We in Suffolk have much for which to be thankful. The Sponsored Bike Ride took place on the 9th September. The morning was fine and dry, and a steady stream of riders called at the church. It is too soon to say how it fared, but it appears numbers were similar to last year. The Trust gave us fine support for our roof fund, 12,000, so it is good we can start to give something back. Thanks to Sarah Cole, the church now has a series of four postcards of St Peter's for sale, together with the new church guide. Visitors and parishoners now have something they can keep and share of our ancient church. Dates for your diary: Remembrance Sunday on 12th November when Bruisyard join us to remember the fallen from our parishes, especially this year, a hundred years from the carnage and loss of the Somme. When we forget the horrors and errors of the past, we risk repeating them. We are having our Carol Service on the 17th December when our friends from the Christian Fellowship will join their voices with ours for the traditional festival of carols and readings. Round up the family, children and grandchildren, Christmas is round the corner. There is a planning application for seven new houses on the poultry shed site in the village. Previous similar applications, although welcomed by 3

most in the parish, have always been turned down. There will be meetings and discussions, but is anybody listening? We wait anxiously for the response to our search for a new Rector. Let us hope 2018 will bring good news and some needed stability and certainty in our parish, and generally in the country. On 2 September the Rev Jonathan Olanczuk returned to Rendham to officiate at the marriage of James Hyde and Della Carr, and this was followed a fortnight later on 16 September by the wedding of Gary Evans and Rebecca Darrington, which was conducted by Rev Martin Percival. Both were very happy events. A mostly sunny day on 9 September ensured a good turnout for the sponsored Bike Ride in aid of SHCT. 39 riders were recorded at Rendham. Many thanks to all those who gave up their time to sit in. Outstanding arrangements of flowers and fruit made St Michael s look beautiful for our Harvest Festival Sung Evensong at 5 pm on 10 6

"Ups & Downs: Barnardo's Foster Children in Suffolk 1890-1950." a talk by Peter Davidson The October meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group will be a talk by Peter Davidson entitled "Ups & Downs: Barnardo's Foster Children in Suffolk 1890-1950. It s a little known fact that over this sixty year period thousands of children from Dr Barnardo s Homes were boarded out with families in rural East Anglia. The talk explores the stories of these children, some of whom ended up a long way from Suffolk, while others still live close to where they were brought up. Peter Davidson is Chairman of Wickham Skeith History Group as well as History Recorder for the village. After a career in the chemical industry he studied History at the University of East Anglia. He has particular interests in family & local history and has been researching the subject of this talk for around 5 years. Whilst much of his research has concerned Wickham Skeith it has expanded into other areas of Suffolk including Leiston & the surrounding area. There were a lot of children from Barnardo s boarded out in the Wickham Market area. 9

The Search so far: The profile mentioned in the last link has been sent to the Archdeacon who made a few comments which are now being addressed. It amounted to sixteen pages of A4 paper which included some interesting photographs. There were numerous links to Web sites to expand the information contained on the pages to include more pictures and videos. We will now amend the profile to that suggested by the Archdeacon, then resend it in time for the next meeting on Thursday 28th September which will be chaired by the Bishops. The Bishops and Archdeacon will have mulled over the new profile, which should give them some idea of what we want as our next incumbent, what we can afford and how that compares with the needs of the diocese! The Bishops will explain how they would like to see the vacancy filled and take ideas from the floor about some points. They may have someone in mind or it maybe agreed that the post should be advertised, hence the profile. The meeting is too late in the month to include the result in this printed copy but we will update the digital copy which can be found on the Badingham Onesuffolk Website: http://badingham.onesuffolk.net/st-johnthe-baptist/upper-alde-link/ The Rectory has already been let on short time agreement. Message from Michael Izzard who has had a two week stay in Ipswich Hospital via Mark who was visiting him. "Please pass on my grateful thanks to all those who have so kindly visited me in hospital and for the prayers made for me during my illness"
