SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST So Turn, and Live September 30 - October 1, 2017 AS WE GATHER Sometimes it feels as though this time in which we live is the very first time that people directly challenge God. Yet this feeling is inaccurate. We are reminded by Ezekiel that God s people were going around saying, God is not just already at the time of the prophets. Distrust of God has been around even longer, since Adam and Eve questioned the goodness of God. In the Gospel, chief priests and elders question the authority of Jesus. Nothing new. But Jesus doesn t react angrily. Instead, He lets His actions speak louder than words. With very few words, Jesus would go on trial, be wrongly convicted, suffer beatings, be mercilessly crucified, and be raised from the grave. In Christ, we need not fear scoffers. We don t need to respond by being snarky. We don t need to try to silence anyone. We simply trust the authority of Jesus death and resurrection and follow His way of loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us. Rather than return evil for evil, we turn to the crucified and risen Jesus and live. WELCOME HANDSHAKES & HUGS "God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." (2 Cor. 9:8, ESV) PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #654 Your Kingdom, O God, Is My Glorious Treasure Your kingdom, O God, is my glorious treasure, My pearl of incomp rable worth. Its value exceeds ev ry standard of measure, Surpassing the wealth of the earth. Lord, give me Your grace and the pow r of the Spirit That, never allured by the world, I inherit Your kingdom of glory and light. Your kingdom, O God, is alive with the power Your Word and Your Spirit bestow. Like yeast, they affect the whole measure of flour, Enabling Your kingdom to grow. Empower me, Lord, as I live Your commission, And bring ev ry planting to perfect fruition, A mustard seed grown to a tree. 1 Your kingdom, O God, is a field for the growing Of seeds that Your mercy has sown; But still in our midst it s the enemy sowing The weeds that imperil Your own. Sustain me, O Lord, till Your day of returning And harvest me homeward at last, To shine in the homeland that quiets all yearning, Where sorrow and danger are past. INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, People: but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Pastor: And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. People: Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, Pastor: so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. People: Therefore, let us do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than ourselves. Pastor: Let each of us look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: Mighty Lord of all, you are slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. We come to you to confess our sins and to receive your forgiveness through Christ Jesus. O Lord, People: we confess to you that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves. Pastor: We have questioned the goodness, justice, and authority of you, our God. People: We have at times acted out of rivalry or conceit. Pastor: We have looked only to our own interests instead of the interests of others. 2

People: We have grumbled and questioned. Pastor: We have not been of the same mind as Christ. People: Our love for you and for one another has faltered. Lead us to true repentance, Lord. Forgive our sins, both what we have done and left undone. Have mercy on us. Seek us, for you alone can find us and restore us. Pastor: Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of our youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember us, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE Page 171 Pastor: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. People: (sung) Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, you exalted your Son to the place of all honor and authority. Enlighten our minds by your Holy Spirit that, confessing Jesus as Lord, we may be led into all truth; through the same Jesus 3 Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Eze kiel 18:1 4, 25 32 (The Lord desires all people to turn to Him and live.) The word of the LORD came to me: What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, declares the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die. Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not just. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not just. O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live. EPISTLE Philippians 2:1 18 (Every knee should bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.) So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on 4

him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. CHOIR ANTHEM (8:00) Psalm to the Savior HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:23 27 (The chief priests and elders question the authority of Jesus.) And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? Jesus answered them, I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man? And they discussed it among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? But if we say, From man, we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet. So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #525 Crown Him With Many Crowns Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heav nly anthem drowns All music but its own. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us come before the Lord with confidence, presenting our prayers and supplications to Him in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, on behalf of His Church and all people according to their needs. Blessed Lord, all 6 continued

souls belong to you, and your ways are more than just. In mercy, you have rescued your people from their sins and restored them to life through the death and resurrection of your only Son. People: Deliver us from pride and presumption, fill us with your Spirit that we would humbly seek to do our best in all circumstances, and teach us to rejoice in your mercy and to delight in your love. Pastor: Lord of all creation, you have abundantly blessed us with all that we call our own and you provide for needs of both body and soul. Bless us to be good stewards of your gifts. People: Help us to give sacrificially to the work of Christ s kingdom, make us faithful to our commitments, that many more may come to know and believe in Jesus as their Savior. Pastor: Almighty God, your Son humbled Himself to be born among us in our flesh and to be obedient to your saving will even to death. Give us your Holy Spirit so that we may bear witness to your Son before the world. People: Bless us also to joyfully serve you with a willing heart. Pastor: Holy Father, with His own blood our Lord established His Church, washed us clean in baptismal water and clothed us with His own righteousness. Give to your Church to her pastors, ministers, missionaries and all church workers, and to each of us, the baptized an obedient heart, People: that we may believe the Truth of the Word and do the will of our Father in heaven. Pastor: Mighty Father, all the might of man is nothing before you, and yet you have appointed earthly realms and rulers for the punishment of those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. People: Give us faithful leaders who will serve honorably and well. Bless especially those who serve in the armed forces to defend us and protect our liberty. Pastor: Almighty God, many peoples still suffer from the devastating storms that have ravaged many places. Be with those in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico, and other parts of the Carribean. People: Father, be their refuge and strength. Make them strong of heart and give them both perseverance and peace. Move us to give in order to help them in their time of need. 7 Pastor: Father of all, at the beginning of time you created man and woman and instituted holy marriage. Thank you for this blessed gift, even as we rejoice with Steve and LeAnne as they celebrate 18 years of marriage. People: Bless all marriages and families by the love of your Son, Jesus Christ. Pastor: Merciful Lord, you are the strength of the weak, the hope of those who despair and the Great Physician of body and soul. Hear us especially for Lonna, Jonathan, Manley, Jerry, Debbie, Charles, Ruth, Pat, Jeannie, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Cliff, Doris, Carol, Ervin, Matthew, Arlene, Mae, Dorothy, John, Arlene, LuEva, Jean, Russ, Helen, Leonard, Jack, Shirley, Sarah and those we name before you in our hearts. People: Give to the sick healing according to your will, grace to support them in their afflictions, patience and endurance when relief does not come, and peace at the last. Pastor: Gracious Lord, your Son sets His table among us. Give us your Holy Spirit, that we may approach the blessed feast of His body and blood with a repentant heart and a confident faith. People: Bless us also to reflect in our lives the precious gifts we receive at the table. Pastor: Ever-living One, your Son is the resurrection and the life. Receive our thanks for the faithful who have gone before us. People: Grant us hope in the resurrection and our portion at the end with your saints in light. Pastor: All things are yours, holy Father, and we are yours. Hear us in the name of and for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
