Quoniam ad te orabo. O hearken thou unto the voice of my calling, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I make my prayer. Words: Ps. 5 Music: Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Entrance Hymn - Sung by Thou whose almighty word THE ORDER OF MASS Hymnal 466 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

Collect for the Sunday called Septuagesima O Lord, we beseech thee favourably to hear the prayers of thy people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. Amen. Old Testament Lesson In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1 v. 1-5

Gradual Psalm And they that know thy Name will put their trust in thee : for thou, Lord, hast never failed them that seek thee. O praise the Lord which dwelleth in Sion : shew the people of_his doings. For when he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them : and forgetteth not the complaint of the poor. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider the trouble which I suffer of them that hate me : thou that liftest me up from the gates_of death. That I may shew all thy praises within the ports of the daughter of Sion : I will rejoice in thy salvation. The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made : in the same net which they hid privily, is their foot taken. The Lord is known to execute judgement : the ungodly is trapped in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell : and all the people that forget God. For the poor shall not alway be forgotten : the patient abiding of the meek shall not perish for ever. Up, Lord, and let not man have the upper hand : let the heathen be judged in thy sight Put them in fear, O Lord : that the heathen may know themselves to be-but men. Psalm 9 v. 10-20

New Testament Lesson Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things: now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast-away. Gradual Quis sicut Dominus Deus noster qui in altis habitat : humilia respicit in caelo et in terra? Gospel Acclamation 1 Corinthains 9 v. 24-end Who is like unto the Lord our God, that hath his dwelling so high: and yet humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth? Praise to you O Christ: King of e - ter - nal Glo-ry. Out of the deep have I called to you O Lord: Lord hear my voice.

The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: Glory be to thee, O Lord. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the good-man of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong; didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way; I will give unto this last even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. Matthew 20 v. 1-16 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Sermon Running the Race The Principal Nicene Creed - Sung by

Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Sentence - Sung by the Choir It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord : and sing praises unto Thy Name, O Most Highest. Offertory Hymn - Sung by Immortal, invisible Hymnal 377

Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Celebrant prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen.

The Lord s Prayer - Sung by As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: Agnus Dei - Sung by the Choir Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.

Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir Illumina faciem tuam super servum tuum et salvum me fac in tua miserivordia : Domine, non confundar quoniam invocavi te. Shew thy servant the light of thy countenance: and save me for thy mercy's sake. Let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon thee. Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. Faith looks towards Jesus Christ Who has done enough for all of us He has become our mediator. Paul Speratus (1484-1551)

Communion Hymn - Sung by Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness Hymnal 280 The Celebrant prays the Post-Communion Prayer, to which all reply: Amen Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. Blessing and Dismissal The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. NOTICES Charles, King and Martyr: Commemorative High Mass on Tuesday 30 January at 6:30pm. The Rev'd Canon Professor Nigel Biggar, Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology, Christ Church Oxford, will be the preacher. Prof Biggar will help us to consider the Christian vocation in political life through a figure in King Charles day, an advocate of compromise and moderation at time when neither were in favour: 'Lucius Carey, loyalist Christian in a time of polarised politics.' After the Mass there will be an opportunity to meet the Preacher and the Chapter over refreshments. History of Anglicanism since 1688: The first lecture in this series will take place this Thursday 1st February. Stephen Edmonds, Curate, St Bartholomew's, Sydenham, will talk on "Anglo-Catholic Preaching on the Incarnation during the Great War". Tea and coffee will be served from 3:30pm, with the lecture beginning at 4:00pm. Candlemas - The Presentation of Christ in the Temple: High Mass by Candlelight on Friday 2 February at 6:30pm, with a sermon delivered by The Rev'd Simon Ponsonby, Pastor of Theology, St Aldate's Church Oxford. The service will feature a candlelight procession from the smaller Chapel of the Blessed Sacremnent to the main chapel of the Resurrection. As we will hear in the Gospel reading, the elder Simeon greeted the arrival of the Infant Jesus with the words: Lord, now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace. Simeon recognized the Christ Child as his Saviour and carried Jesus, the Light of the world, in his arms, and so we too will carry our lighted candles as a sign of that light that came into the world. During this service, candles for the next year will be blessed. It is these customs which give the service the popular name of Candlemas. Confession and Spiritual Direction: A regular and important part of the ministry of the House. If you are thinking about either please have a word with one of the Clergy. Baptism and Confirmation: If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy. Being in Credit - What do we actually believe? This term's discussion group, beginning this Monday, will be examining the Nicene Creed through the lens of lived Christian experience, and vice versa.
