News of he locals Macon Ges Press Macon Chaper of Missouri Federaion of Business and Professional Women s Club s, Inc. was honored wih a full page of recogniion in heir local paper, he Macon Chronicle-Herald. The following is a reprin of ha aricle. The Macon BPW was organized 82 years ago, May 26, 1927 by Dr. Vera Young, Firs Vice-Presiden and Membership Chairman of he Missouri Federaion. Chillicohe was he sponsoring club. The charer was presened on June 27, 1927 by Mrs. Grace Reed, he Sae Treasurer. There were 30 charer members. Maude D. Brock was he firs presiden. Oher officers were Hallie Moore, VP, Mrs. O.J. (Thelma) Lamb, recording secreary, Mrs. L. C. Zwahlern, reasurer and Opal Walker, corresponding secreary. The firs acion of civic ineres aken by he club was he endorsemen of he ciy lake projec; he club aended a mass meeing a he cour house in he ineres of he projec. On he firs birhday, he club presened Macon wih he elecric sign which was locaed on Highway 63 souh. Anoher conribuion o he ciy was over 300 sree markers. The club has been acive in sponsoring many worhwhile projecs such as Crippled Children s Clinic, benefis for cancer prevenion and conrol program, book reviews, a public resroom, manned elephones in a drough year waer emergency and he ciy s liering ordinance. In 1953, an ousanding achievemen was sponsoring a roadside park (Buler-Franks) near Macon souh on Hwy. 63, for which he club presened ables, ovens, fence and paid he annual elecric bill for all nigh lighing for a number of years. The club sresses service o youh by presening an annual scholarship o a high school senior. For several years, he club honored a Girl of he Monh and enerained senior girls. The club is again sponsoring a junior o Girl s Sae. The club also conribues yearly o he Macon Couny Rescue Squad and he Macon Couny Rural fire deparmen. The club has made conribuions o civic and chariable organizaions. The also assised in he open house of he new nursing home, Loch Haven by providing and serving refreshmens. They assised in he Handicap Pary for a number of years, were acive in he Clean-Up Campaign working wih Communiy Beermen o achieve he Five Sars for he communiy, plus our ciy was recognized as An All-American Ciy. In 1969, a pas presidens club was organized. The club mees every hree monhs, has dinner and a social evening. They enerain wih a birhday pary in April for he Loch Haven residens. Cake and ice cream are served and gifs are given o hose celebraing birhdays his special monh. The club celebraed i s Golden Anniversary in May 1977 wih a banque honoring charer members. A program of reminiscing was presened by pas presidens. Missouri Business Women s Week is observed he hird week in Ocober. The Macon club has observed he week a number of ways including: a prayer breakfas, a devoional coffee, aended church as a group, had a fun nigh wih a Sham Wedding, a Hawaiian luau, a memorial for deceased members, decoraed downown business windows for he week, and much more. Members who have served on he sae board are: Ruh Browif, 1929-30; Esher Gushall, 1947-48; Lora Akers, 1950-59; Missouri Business Women s Week Publiciy Marianna Eaves, 1975-77; Flossie Burkhar, 1976-77, Evelyn Brown, Disric Direcor, 1995-96. LuAnn Irby is he 59h presiden o serve he club in is 82 years of hisory. In 1993, he club ook par in he projec, A Bear o Share for Those Who Care. Bears were donaed for abused children. The Club also paricipaed in Daffodil Days raising money for cancer research. Following he flood of 1993, he club donaed $400 o flood vicims assisance. From 1994-2009 he club has held raffles, bake sales, fashion shows, jewelry shows, a jazz pianis, Rober Aul Show, all for proceeds going o communiy projecs. They have donaed o he Samarian Foundaion Dialysis Cener, he Miniserial Alliance, needy families a Chrismas, Toys for Sana s Shop, he Lieracy Cener, provided sweashirs for abuse vicims, he Shelered Workshop, he YMCA, he Macon Couny rescue squad, he Macon Couny rural fire deparmen and he ciy o help purchase seasonal banners. The club paricipaed in Daffodil Days, he Maple Leaf Fesival and assised he Chamber of Commerce deliver Welcome baskes o new residens. They also donae a number of iems for he silen aucion o benefi he Macon PTA. The aricle was accompanied by a picure. Curren members who were picured in he paper are: Neva Maddy, Reda Kisor, Lynn Sadler, Lillian Freeman, LuAnn Irby, Gerri Gibson, Helena Mulvanery, Brenda Clema, Janie Ellerbeck, Pa Mahoney, Donna Mefford and Evelyn Brown. Congraulaions o he Macon BPW for 100+ years of ousanding service! Greaer Ozarks BPW Honors Woman of he Year Greaer Ozarks BPW celebraed MBWW wih a program feauring gues speaker, Dr. Nancy O Reilly. Greaer Ozarks also paid ribue o wo of heir own members, recognizing hem for heir coninued involvemen in empowering women from all all vocaions. Sharon Mangan was named Missouri Business Woman of he Year and Cindy Reed was named runner up.
