As We Gather: Fifth Sunday in Lent March 18, 2018 Connecting to Christ - Starting Over Series - Part 3 New Actions All relationships are rooted in good communication. And so it is in our relationship with God, our Father. Prayer is a powerful gift given to the followers of Jesus. In prayer we talk to God. Jesus lays out a remarkable pattern for us in the prayer that has come to be known as the Lord s Prayer. Ironically it can become the very thing Jesus warned us against - a mindless repetition of words. Today we lay claim to this precious gift and put it into practice in our lives as followers of Jesus. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. God Speaks To Us From His Word First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 (ESV) 31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 6
Hymn of Response: Lamb of God LSB 550 Holy Gospel: Matthew 6:5-15 (ESV) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord! 5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you 7 continued
pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ! Hymn of the Day: What a Friend We Have in Jesus LSB 770 8
Sermon Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction: God Blesses Us And Sends Us Out P: The Lord bless you and keep you.
