ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God s] presence (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

From Chapter Four, Integral Ecology Together with the patrimony of nature, there is also an historic, artistic and cultural patrimony which is likewise under threat Ecology, then, also involves protecting the cultural treasures of humanity in the broadest sense The disappearance of a culture can be just as serious, or even more serious, than the disappearance of a species of plant or animal. Pope Francis, Laudato Si, 143 145. Family Prayer Night hosted by Family Life Committee Wednesday, March 27, 6:00PM Plan now to attend our Family Night of Prayer during the Lenten season. The religious formation classrooms will be transformed into peaceful, prayerful environments. This will be a fun, interactive Lenten Faith Experience for the whole family. General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. www.johnxxiiicc.org The Gospel According to Mark Since we began Lent on March 6, we are going to skip ahead in Mark s Gospel to make these bulletin discussions more relevant for Lent and Easter. Unfortunately, we will need to exclude the Last Supper because it would not fit in the space allotted in the bulletin. The Last Supper needs to be fully discussed and not condensed, since it is central to our beliefs as Catholics. After Easter, we will pick up from where we left off before Lent began. As we finish this series, we will end with two parts on the Last Supper account. We will begin this first Sunday with the Agony in the Garden, which is the beginning of the suffering of Jesus. After eating, Jesus and his disciples sing a hymn before traveling to the Mount of Olives. On the way Jesus says, You will all be caused to falter, because it is written, I shall strike down the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered. But after I have been raised, I shall precede you into Galilee. Mark is briefly setting the stage for Jesus resurrection account at the end of his Gospel, where the angel at the tomb will say exactly these same words. Then Peter declares, Even if all will be made to falter, still I shall not. Then Jesus tells him, Amen, I tell you that today, this very night before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times. Then Peter more vehemently says, Even if it should be necessary for me to die with you, I most assuredly will not deny you. And all the others with them spoke similarly. They now go to Gethsemane and Jesus tells the disciples, meaning us believers also, to Sit down here while I pray. He takes Peter, James, and John along with him and he begins to be overwhelmed and to suffer distress. Peter s bravado ends here. And he began to be much troubled and distressed and says to them, My soul is deeply grieved unto death in anguish, to the point of death; remain here, and watch. And going a little ahead he fell on the ground and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass him by. He said, Abba-Father, for you all things are possible; take this cup away from me; yet not as I desire, but you. And he comes and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Keep watch and pray that you might not come to trial; truly, the spirit is eager but the flesh is frail. Fr. Ark PLEASE be CAREFUL when walking in the parking lot as certain areas are higher and/or lower than other areas. These areas are marked off with cemented curves and/ or rocked areas (islands).
