November 5, 2017 ORDER OF WORSHIP ALL SAINTS SUNDAY The beginning of the opening voluntary is a call to silent, personal meditation. Please silence all electronic devices as we prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. 10:00 a.m. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Blessed are all your saints, O God, who have traveled over the tempestuous seas of this mortal life, and have made the harbor of peace and felicity. Watch over us who are still on our dangerous voyage and forgive us our shortcomings and offenses; remember such as lie exposed to the rough storms of trouble and temptations. Frail is our vessel, and the ocean is wide; but as in your mercy you have set our course, so steer the vessel of our life toward the everlasting shore of peace, and bring us at last to the quiet haven of our heart s desire, where you, O our God, are blessed and live and reign forever and ever. Music and Arts at PCCH We may not always appreciate how central music is to worship but Martin Luther did, and this week seems like a particularly good time to remember that. In reading about the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, I came upon this quote from Luther: A schoolmaster ought to have skill in music, or I would not regard him; neither should we ordain young men to be preachers [or women it s 2017], unless they have been well exercised in music. Fortunately, we do have preachers who recognize this, and have helped build one of the most remarkable music and arts programs in the area. That program is central both to our worship service each week and to our mission outreach. How many of us have been drawn to PCCH because of its music whether that was Mark Anderson or Ken Lovett playing the organ, Dan Spratlan s excellent choir or one of the many musical groups that makes our sanctuary its home? Music fills our hearts and the quality of our music helps fill our pews, too. Let s not overlook the many artists in our congregation who share their work and help draw other artists to shows in Widener Hall like the one we will see this weekend. Play readings both entertain and inform us. They help bring us together but also connect us with others in the community. Our pledges make this possible. They pay our staff, pay our soloists, and make our church an attractive and welcoming place for us and for those who visit. Please consider raising your pledge by 1% of your household income. But if that doesn t move you, here is another quote from Luther that makes the point perhaps a little more bluntly than Cindy would: He must be a coarse clod and not worthy of hearing such charming music, who does not delight in this, and is not moved by such a marvel. He should rather listen to the donkey braying...or the barking of dogs and pigs, than to such music. With your continued support, all of us can, as the psalmist says, Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Mark Bernstein MUSIC ATTRIBUTIONS: Hymns, anthems and texts reproduced with permission CCLI.
