Fr. Dan Weekly Message Patience and Love When the late Christopher Lasch wrote his landmark book The Culture of Narcissism 30 years ago, many people misunderstood it. A quick reading gave the impression that Lasch was cricizing modern egosm and selfindulgence. But his real point was a lot more troubling. Lasch believed that modern consumer culture is a shell game. The mass media create the illusion that we re, each of us, sovereign individuals; that we create our own values and lifestyles; that our opinions really maer; and that products and corporaons exist to benefit our lives because we deserve it. Real faith demands courage; it creates a holy restlessness about our own sins and the suffering and needs of others. The real Chrisan knows that bapsm is a mandate to act, not consume; that our lives have a purpose larger than ourselves; that our choices do maer immensely, but not because we create their meaning; that we actually deserve very lile on our own merits and that God s love is a free, unearned gi we have a duty to share. The defining qualies of every mature Catholic life are gratude, not greed; and confidence in Jesus Christ, not cowardice or false compromise with an unbelieving world. Love, as Scripture tells us, casts out fear; but it does much more than that: It replaces fear with strength becauseto quote St. Paul the love of Christ impels us (2 Cor 5:14). If we really believe in Jesus Christas St. Paul didwe already have the most important thing we need. In fact, St. Paul s epistles, his missionary zeal and his extraordinary passion for God are tesmony to what one person, living with convicon, can accomplish. Jesus Christ redeemed us on the cross. But God used St. Paul to take that good news to the worldas we now must. How do we do that? We don t need to work in the foreign missions to follow in the footsteps of St. Paul. We can be missionaries right here, in the mundane circumstances God places us. We need to be people of daily prayer and regular worship. We need to show God s paence and love to the persons we meet on an everyday basisour families, our coworkers and strangers on the street. Furthermore, as we begin this New Year, it s especially fing to constantly deepen our knowledge of the faith by reading, study and adult as well as youth formaon. Fr. Dan Coping with Grief in the New Year As the New Year begins, here are a few simple suggesons that may be helpful for those who are grieving. Think about new ways to pray. Pray for renewal and personal transformaon. Be thankful for who you are, for your Godgiven gis, for the gi of life. Write in a journal to see what s in your inmost heart. Oen your own words show you best where you ve been and give you direcon for the future. Smile and laugh out loud the relief and release may be surprising. Stay connected to the world. Reach out to others to relieve isolaon and loneliness. Relax a lile because, when you do, you realize that you re spiritually equipped to survive the devastaon of your grief. I tell you truly: you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices; you will grieve for a me, but your grief will be turned to joy. WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ? How do we know which books belong to the Bible? a) looking in the table of contents b) by the loy, canonical style c) by ancient decrees of the Catholic Church d) by pastoral council decree. ERAs Senior Network This is a nonprofit organizaon whose mission is to engage and support Waukesha County seniors in leading meaningful lives. Seniors and adults with disabilies are supported by volunteers of all ages to help them maintain their independence. ERAs helps individuals 55 and older stay engaged in their community through a variety of meaningful volunteer opportunies. There is a wealth of informaon here for seniors or those who care for seniors in their lives: enrichment acvies, transportaon, yard clean up, support for seniors, support for caregivers and more. See their website at eraswaukesha.org. If you need similar assistance outside of our area, contact www.interfaithmilw.org or www.wisconsincaregiver.org. Why do we do that? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Queson: Besides the Wise Men, what is significant about the Epiphany? Answer: Epiphany means "manifestaon," or public display. The feast is usually celebrated January 6. In the US, it is celebrated on the Sunday nearest to January 6. It originates from a story unique to Mahew (2:112). Magi from the East come to offer homage to the newborn King, presenng him with gis of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This part of Mahew's infancy narrave differs from Luke's account of the birth of Jesus. In Luke there are no Magi, star, nor gis. Luke has Jesus being born in a stable aer Mary and Joseph's long travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mahew seems to have the family living in a house in Bethlehem, where the Magi find them. Why these differences? They stem from the needs and concerns of the audience the authors were addressing, as well as the theological stance of each author. Knowing the original intenon helps get at the correct interpretaon of the text. Since Mahew was wring primarily to a Jewish community, his concern was to show that Jesus did not come just for Jews, but for Genles as well. From his very birth, Jesus not only manifests himself to Jews, but also to Genles, who are prominently included in the manifestaon, symbolized by the Magi and their journey. This is the most significant aspect of the feast of Epiphany. How do you manifest Jesus to all with whom you come into contact? Common Committee Meeting Night January 10th 6:00 p.m. All St. Bruno commiees are invited to a social & light dinner event in the Gathering Place on Jan. 10th at 6:00 p.m. Please RSVP to your commiee chairperson by January 3rd. You're doing great. I'm so proud of you." Every child should hear words like that. Every child wants to feel God's love. As Jesus grew from a boy to a man, he showed he was ready to live for God.
