VIRGINIA CHURCH LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Page 4 Course Information Administrative Functions in Concourse Change patron and item information, perform an inventory, configure timeouts, clean up subject headings, and answer questions. Book Repair Learn how to make old books new again, showing you how to make repairs to damaged items. Jewel Barger Budget and Financial Planning Your church library needs to be a part of the church budget. We will work out a professional budget proposal to submit to the finance committee. An amount written on a napkin and handed to the chairman of the committee right before their final meeting just doesn't work! We will also discuss ways to get money from other sources to keep the library running at full capacity. Cataloging with Concourse Configure settings, add/modify items, delete a master record, compare two items, catalog manually and with ezcat, and answer questions. Classification Everyone needs to have a "working" knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. You may not be the person who classifies all the books, but you need to be able to help patrons when they are searching for something special. This will be a hands on study for beginners and those who need a refresher class. Bring your Dewey, 200 Dewey and/or Classification System for Church Libraries if these are available. Concourse 101 The basic functions of Concourse worker records, check in and out, explanation of flow charts; shortcuts, access Help files, and answer questions. Creating Reports in Concourse Discuss the various kinds of reports (catalog, circulation, patron) and mediagraphies, create/modify reports, and answer questions. Equipping You for the Electronic Age Karen Jones Join Karen as she introduces you to web resources and provides you with a list of publishers, email distribution lists, and websites to obtain FREE books and ebooks for your library! Let s Talk About Promotion (Q&A) & Resource List Rah, rah! Ha, ha! Blah, blah What response are you getting with your church library ministry promotion? Maybe it s time we take a closer look at how we do promotion. Let s talk Bring your promotion questions to the table. Library Administration This class covers the nitty-gritty of running a top notch library. Everything from when should the library be open to finding/working with volunteers to making the library one the whole church will be proud of. Although designed for Library Team Leaders, I encourage every church to be represented in this class. You do not have to be the leader to attend. Library of the Future It s easy to be insulated and comfortable in a cozy church library cocoon. We will look at global trends (e.g. social media, technology, storage, availability of data, maker movement, the aging population, etc.) that might impact what we do and how we do it. We will develop strategies to remain relevant in a changing world in our unique situations while still being true to our calling to provide TRUTH and equip patrons for the future. Library on Mission Equipping the next generation of church librarians with evangelism (through social libraries) and missions tools (including storytelling kits) to take on mission. We will explore ideas, hear success stories, and seek ways for the library ministry to reach those in need of the love of Christ by using quality resources. Attendees will take home an awesome resource list including apps, movies, and websites. Patron Information and Circulating Items in Concourse Set up patron parameters, add/modify patrons, add/modify patron classes, look at circulation desk and check in window features, and answer questions. Patron Notification in Concourse Form letters, overdue notices, email notices, reserving items, and answer questions.

VIRGINIA CHURCH LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Page 5 Notes of Interest Procedures Manual What on earth is this? I'm not talking about the Church Library Ministry Information Service, although it is a big help. Every Procedures Manual will be different, tailor made for your library situation. We will cover the items in our legacy as we think of passing knowledge on to others who come after us, as well as new library team members who have no idea what they are supposed to do. Promotion This fun class will help you design bulletin boards and displays, probably the two best ways to advertise what your library has to offer. We will also talk about mini displays that can be easily moved from location to location, and time permitting (!) we might throw in a poster or two! Promotion Worthy Are you working hard to grab the attention of readers, updating the look of the library, rewarding patrons with great prizes? But, is it WORTHY of the widow s mite that funds the budget, of the limited time your patrons have for reading, of the effort your team is making to pull it all off? Let s re-examine the WORTHINESS of our library ministry and come away with a list of practical and WORTHY ideas of promotion. Using Microsoft Word and Publisher to Create Library Publications Karen Jones The reputation of your library is determined by the quality of materials that you produce. Patrons are used to seeing professional quality print materials come in to their house from the direct marketing advertisers. They will judge the professionalism of your library based on the output and quality of your print materials. Karen will provide publishing tips and tricks and show you how to take advantage of the FREE resources available to create professional-looking print materials. This is a BYOL Bring Your Own Laptop (optional) workshop using MS Word and Publisher version 2013 (also applicable to 2016). Using Social Media to Market Your Library Overwhelmed by the different terms used to refer to social media such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook? This session will introduce you to the top social media sites and provide you tips/ tricks to use them to promote your library. If you would like to receive media reviews via-email, contact either Toni Everard at 1annettentelos.net or Jackie Harris at jdeeharris5@gmail.com Karen Jones If you would like to have a mentor help with your library or receive helpful information, contact either Toni Everard, Development Director, 540-949-7947, or Jackie Harris, Asst.
