Tirukkural Chapter 8: Possessing Love. Can there be a latch to lock in and hide love? It will reveal itself through tears when a loved one is in trouble. Loveless people hold everything to themselves. Those, who are filled with love, bear even their bones for others. Like life is linked to the flesh, love is integral to life. Love yields affection for all, which leads to invaluable friendships. Joy in this world is the result of a life of love for all. The ignorant think that love is needed only for righteous deeds; they know not that love is an ally for bravery too. A life without love will be stung by the righteous conscience like a body without bones that is burnt by the sun. A life without love in the heart is as futile as a dried-up tree blossoming in a desert. What useful things can external body parts do, if the heart is devoid of love. Only a person who follows the path of love, is in a state of living; else it is just a skeleton dressed with skin. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Pastor You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you (Luke 12:20). Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus parable. The rich man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him fool? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, I shall. God s not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness four times, my/myself. No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing treasure for ourselves, Jesus and Pope Francis Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow rich in what matters to God (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. Heal with Jesus own gentleness the doubt, ignorance, and sins of others; comfort, forgive, be patient; and pray for the living and dead. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Why two parts? One is focused on those asking to enter into the Catechumenate period and the other is for those asking to complete their initiation sacraments (Confirmation and Eucharist). The Catechumenate period is the longest period of preparing for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. At this part of the Rite, we are hearing the first declaration of their intent to the Church and the Church, all of us, in turn accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. By the Signing of the Senses we are opening their senses to the Spirit. They are then welcomed to the table of God s Word for the first time. The Rite book says, God showers his grace on the candidates, since the celebration manifests their desire publicly and marks their reception and first consecration by the Church. (RCIA #41) We will now call these persons catechumens which means unbaptized. The second part of this Rite is for those who have already been baptized in the faith. This time we have two baptized Catholics who seek to complete their sacraments. Since they are already one of us, we don t need to sign their senses to awaken them. They are merely signed with the Sign of the Cross to show their intent to continue. They will be invited to do dismissal catechesis today, but they may not always go since they are already Catholic. We will call these two women candidates since they are merely completing sacraments. Please join us in welcoming our two new catechumens and one new candidate! If you are interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith or want to finish your initiation sacraments (first eucharist & confirmation), contact me at (916) 452-0296, ext. 20 or at sblecha@stmaryparishsacramento.com for more information. -Shannon Blecha RCIA Adult and Teens Sessions Catechumenate: Sundays 10:30 am, Marian Room July 31: Holy Orders August 7: Morality Aug. 14: Great Commandment Aug. 21: Lord s Prayer Aug. 28: Reconciliation Sept. 4: DISMISSAL ONLY Inquiry: Mondays, 7:00 pm Holy Spouses Room NEW INQUIRY FORMING NOW! For more information about a specific ministry, contact the ministry chairperson listed in the directory or the parish rectory. We will look at this information and try to determine what we can do to make improvements and meet the needs of our parishioners. With the two questions shown above we notice that there are quite a few parishioners that volunteer for our parish ministries. The responses to question 2 give us some insight as to what would encourage people to volunteer. The most common answer is needing to make time along with that also go scheduling conflicts. This of course if something that is a main concern in our society. There are a lot of activities that demand our time, talent and treasure and it is up to every individual to decide for themselves where they want to spend it. It is interesting to note that some responses were that parishioners would respond to a personal invitation. We encourage all our ministries to reach out to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and invite them to participate. We are all part of the same parish family and together we are what will make our parish great.

Bible Study Bible Study is on hiatus for the summer months! Instead of meeting regularly this summer, there will be an informal book club. Read the book on your own during the summer months, and in late August, we will gather together to discuss the book and what we learned. Anyone can join in! Our book will focus on St. Faustina Kowalska and Divine Mercy, you can purchase it online, or at a catholic book store near you. Come grow with us this summer! Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul The book is based on the contents of Saint Faustina's diary from 1934 until her death in 1938. It reflects her thoughts, prayers and her reported visions and conversations with Jesus on Divine Mercy. This amazing narrative will stir your heart and soul while it chronicles the experience of this simple Polish nun. Bible Study will return in the fall with a study on The Bible and the Virgin Mary. Be sure to join us! "For in the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets His children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life." DV 21 "For the word of God is living and active" (Heb. 4:12) and "it has power to build you up and give you your heritage among all those who are sanctified" (Acts 20:32; see 1 Thess. 2:13). Married Couples By offering Married Couples the beautiful experience of a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend, the Catholic Church is affirming and supporting you in your chosen vocation Marriage.
