K-2nd March 24-25, 2018 Palm Sunday Luke 19:28-40 Jesus is the promised king, and we can praise him. Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Before Large Group, be sure to set up expectations: Talk about how we can show respect to each other by listening, being silent when the leader is talking, and having FUN! As kids leave, ask them to retell today s story using their scene/props! Today we re talking about when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, which is when people recognized Jesus as the Rescuer they had been waiting for. They treated him like a king...because he IS our king!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. BE A KING! Before starting: During this activity, play the music mix on the first slide of the keynote (it s a mix of royal kingly music to fit the theme of the activity). If you want to use this music, you ll need to do Connect Time in a Large Group area where the keynote is available. Lay out two long pieces of tear-off paper on the floor. Each piece of paper should be long enough to go from one side of the room to the opposite side. Lay the two pieces of paper next to each other. (You can also leave the paper out for the next service instead of throwing it away.) Divide kids into two teams. Tell kids that we re going to have a King competition! Each kid will take turns walking to the end of the special runway and then walk back to their team (have fun and describe the paper runways as a fancy red carpet that only a true king can walk down!) To walk down the runway, each kid has to wear the crown, robe and scepter while doing his or her most king-like walk. (The robe is a tablecloth that can be draped over the shoulders, wrapped around the body, etc.) Encourage kids to be as silly as they want (walking funny, skipping, etc.) If some kids are shy, let them walk in pairs! The only rule is that they can t run; they have to walk. If they run, they re out! Tips: It s not necessary to make it a competition, but if you want, the first team to get all the kids up and down the runways, wins. If you want, award kids for superlatives, like silliest, most kingly, most creative, etc. Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

K-2nd Palm Sunday is an important part of the story leading up to Jesus death. This week, we ll be focusing on the celebratory events of Palm Sunday, while leaving the details of his sacrifice for next week (Easter). JESUS WANTS US TO WORK AS A TEAM Main Goal: Review Connect Time and understand why Jesus wants us to work together. Here s a link to today s story video: God s Story / Palm Sunday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o56 CiH0dwLw Welcome: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you here today. Great job playing that game in Connect Time! Ask: Did you have fun acting like kings in Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) You all could definitely be royalty! How do you think a king should act? (Let kids respond.) Great answers. Ask: Do you think kings should have a crown? (Click to show crown image and let kids respond.) Okay, do you think kings should have a fancy robe? (Click to show robe image and let kids respond.) How do you think a king should get around places? Would they have a fancy car to arrive in? (Click to show car image and let kids respond.) Say: Let s check out a video of a funny king who has all those things! Video: Minions / King Bob Say: That was a pretty funny king, wasn t it!? And regular kings DO usually have all those cool things! But today, we re talking about a king who didn t have any of that! Do you know who it is? (Let kids respond, Jesus! ) Yep, you re right! It s Jesus!

JESUS WASN T A REGULAR KING THE KING ARRIVES JESUS IS TREATED LIKE A KING Say: Jesus didn t look like a regular king. He didn t have a crown, or a fancy robe, or fancy car. In fact, when Jesus was ready to announce that he was the king, he asked his disciples to go get him a young donkey to ride on, like this! (Play the video clip of a donkey) That doesn t seem very kingly, does it?! Well guess what...hundreds of years before Jesus came, God told his family that the rescuer, the long awaited king, would come and ride on a young donkey! And that s exactly what Jesus did. Say: Today, we re going to hear about how Jesus arrived as a king, and there s three important things to know: a. God s family waited a LONG time for their rescuer to come. Hundreds and hundreds of years! b. God DID send a king, Jesus, just like he promised. He was God s son, and he was sent to earth to save us from all the wrong choices we make. c. Before Jesus did that huge job, he and his followers headed to Jerusalem, a really big, important city. Say: Let s watch a video and see what happens as they approach the city. Pay attention to how people react, and how they treat Jesus like a king! Video: God s Story / Palm Sunday Ask: Wow, so how did people treat Jesus? What did they do as he came riding into Jerusalem? (Let kids respond.) That s right, they waved palm branches, laid their coats on the ground, and shouted praises to him! That s why we call that day, Palm Sunday. Say: Now people didn t just wave palm branches and lay them on the ground for fun. Palm branches were a symbol of celebration and royalty. It was really special. And while we don t wave palm branches and lay down our coats as carpeting anymore, we do scream and wave and cheer with excitement for things, don t we? Say: It s kind of like in this video of people celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles winning this year s Super Bowl! Video: Eagles Parade 2018 Say: Imagine crowds like that screaming out of love and joy that they get to follow Jesus! That would be pretty incredible, wouldn t it?

PEOPLE WELCOME AND CELEBRATE JESUS WE CAN PRAISE JESUS EASTER IS NEXT WEEK! Say: What s even more incredible, is that people weren t just cheering and celebrating him because he was famous; they celebrated because he was their rescuer! He was God s son, who came down to earth to take the punishment for all our sins. The very rescuer they had been waiting for soooooo long. And for that, people praised him. Say: Praising Jesus means that we tell him how good, amazing and perfect he is. We tell him how much we adore and love him. We thank him for taking care of us and giving us what we need. We remember all the things he s done for us, and how he is more mighty than anything in the whole universe! Say: Let s check out an example of praise in the Bible, written by a very famous and powerful King named David. (Let kids read out loud if they want.) Slide: Psalm 150: 1-2, 6: Praise the Lord. Praise God in his mighty temple. Praise Him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his powerful acts. Praise him because he is greater than anything else.let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord! Say: That s a lot of praise! And Jesus deserves ALL of it, because he is a mighty king AND he s our loving father. In fact, let s praise Jesus out loud right now! On the count of three, we re going to tell yell, Jesus, you are good! Ready? 1, 2, 3! (Let kids respond.) Say: Okay, now let s praise Jesus and shout, Jesus, you are wonderful! Ready? 1, 2, 3! (Let kids respond.) Great job! Say: Let s give him praise one last time, and make it the loudest yet! Let s say, Jesus, we love you! Ready? 1, 2, 3! (Let kids respond.) Wow! Great job everyone, Jesus definitely heard all that praise! Say: Next week, we re going to hear the next, and most IMPORTANT, part of this story. We ll see what happened a week later, after all these people welcomed Jesus and praised him as their king. We ll see how Jesus rescued us by taking the punishment for all the wrong things we do. Say: Since it s SUCH an important week, we want you to invite your friends to Kids Club! It s going to be amazing, and it s not something you or your friends want to miss!

WRAP AND WORSHIP Say: Right now, we re going to praise Jesus, and tell him out loud how good and perfect and mighty he is! First, everyone get a paper palm branch. (Have volunteers pass them out.) Ask: Who remembers what people used these for in today s story? (Let a kids respond.) Yep, people waved them in the air as they praised Jesus! We re going to do the same. You can wave it up high as we sing, or just hold it, it s up to you. Just remember, Jesus deserves the best praise we can possibly give! Music Video: Real Love Music Video: All That You Need Prayer: Jesus, you deserve the best praise we can possibly give, because you are a mighty king and a loving father. You show us love, so we can show love to you too. Amen! *Let kids take their palm branch back to small group.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand why people praised Jesus on Palm Sunday and (2) identify ways we can praise Jesus treat him as our king. Why? It s important that kids understand that Jesus was God s promised Rescuer and is still our king today. Tips: Share your favorite ways to praise Jesus! Kids loving hearing from you! RESPOND TO THE STORY 1. What did the people in Jerusalem do as Jesus rode into town? 2. Why were people shouting and laying down palm branches? 3. What does it mean to praise Jesus? Why is Jesus worthy of our very best praise? 4. What would you guys have done if you were in Jerusalem when Jesus rode in on a donkey? How would you want to praise him? CREATE THE SCENE! Recreate Palm Sunday, when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, and was celebrated like a king! Set out markers, scissors and glue sticks. Give each kid the following: 1 road image (explain that this is the road Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey) 5 fabric squares (glue these along the road; these are the coats that people laid on the ground) 5 leaf stickers (glue these along the road; these are the palm branches that people waved and laid on the ground; Stickers are on sheets, so you ll need to allocate 5 leaf stickers to each kid by cutting sheets into smaller sections. Let kids take stickers, than pass them on, etc.) Give each 1 Jesus on a donkey image. They can cut it out, and ride it along the road, like he did on Palm Sunday! (Cutting is not necessary if you have younger kids.) EASTER INVITATION *If you don t have time to focus on this activity, just make sure kids know what the invitation is for, and let them take it home! You could also pass them out at the door if needed. Remind kids that next weekend is Easter! Since it s SUCH an important week, we want you to invite your friends to Kids Club! It s going to be an incredible experience, and it s not something you or your friends want to miss! Give kids an invitation to fill out and give to a friend, to invite them to Kids Club for a special Easter service next week! (They can decorate it if there s time.)

Extra time? Let kids do a coloring page! Then ask them to create the story for you, and act out Jesus riding along the road over palm branches and coats!
