The Oklahoma February, 2019 405-947-6540 Thoughts from Council Chair Debbie Spring is in the air!!! Well, at least according to the calendar! Spring is refreshing! This morning as I sat enjoying my coffee I realized that I could hear the birds singing! My dandelions are coming up and before you know it the trees will be budding with flowers and new leaves. Doesn t the thought of it put a smile on your face? Something else that cannot only put a smile on your face but on someone else s kindness! Kindness is something we can all do for others. It doesn t have to cost money either. You can smile at someone and make their day. You can let someone go in front of you at the grocery store or pay for someone in a fast food line. How about that neighbor that is not able to clean up their leaves or mow their lawn? I bet if you sat down and made a list of ways you can be kind, you would be surprised as to how much you can think of. LCI wants us as Lions to promote kindness. I am the President of the Oklahoma Lion online: www.oklahomalions.org Ponca City Noon Lions this year and at the beginning of my year I decided that at the end of our meetings I would always say Remember kindness matters. It s an important message to me and I hope that all of our members feel the same way! Mark Twain said Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. So my challenge for you is to be kind pay it forward.and be sure to smile while doing it! Okay..here s a little business. If you remember in the last newsletter I mentioned our Service Project for the State Convention in May. If you haven t started, I encourage you to start collecting small toiletries that we will put a bag together and donate it to a shelter and/or homeless Veterans. If you bring in a bucket or box to your meeting and each week your members can bring something, we will have a great amount to donate! If you have any questions on this, please feel free to call me or email me. We are also having a Sock Hop on May 3 rd for the State Convention and are collecting socks. These will be included in our bags to give away. You can collect these too at Lion 3/5 Mardi Gra, 3/6, Ash Wed, 3/10 Daylight Savings Time, 3/17 St. Pattys Day, 3/20 Spring Begins your meetings. 2018-2019 District 3-E Governor Neal Wood (C) 918-465-6397 neal@mcalesterink.com I want to thank all of those that worked so hard in planning and putting on our 3E Mid-Winter Convention, hosted by the McAlester and Wilburton Lions Clubs, and to all of you that attended the festivities. I hope that those of you that attended had fun and have a better understanding of just what Lions are doing in Oklahoma. We were very glad to have ID Gary Brown and his wife Lion Barbara, from New York, attend our convention. We started out the convention with a Service Project at Shared Blessings, in McAlester, where we filled bags for the Backpack Nutrition Program. Then Friday evening we had a meet and greet dinner at the Meeting Place in McAlester, even singing a few old songs. Then Saturday morning we met on the campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College, where we opened with Miss McAlester singing the National Anthem. We had some very interesting programs, including Who Owns Oklahoma presented by Lion DA Chuck Sullivan and Women in Lions presented by Lion Barbara Brown. Sam McClatherry, sponsored by the Dewey Lions Club, won the Speech Contest and Journey Dampier, sponsored by the Pocola Lions Club, won the Peace Poster Contest. ID Gary Brown presented a very interesting Keynote Address at the Luncheon and presented several awards, including a Melvin Jones Fellowship to Lion Ronnie Smith Jr and a Melvin Jones Fellowship to DG Neal Wood. Lion Barbara Brown presented Lion Patty Bryant with International President Gudrun Yngvadottir s New Voices bracelet award. And after the evening banquet, we even had a little fun playing Corn Hole (bean bag toss) and Farkle (with giant dice). The silent auction raised $326.00 for the (ID) Jim Sullivan Scholarship at Eastern Oklahoma State College. Several clubs brought their Club Poster Boards with pictures of their club activities (please keep those poster boards and bring them to the State Convention in OKC on May 4th) and we had several table displays of our State Projects. I want to thank the many sponsors who helped provide us with all the door prizes that we were able to give out and I d also like to thank the Wilburton Lions Club for providing our hospitality room for us. At our District Meeting, held at the convention, we elected 2nd Vice District Governor Dollie Wooddell to move up to be our 1st Vice District Governor for next year. We still do not have any one to take the position of District Governor for next year. And we also need a 2 Vice District Governor for next year. Please talk to your fellow Lions and see if you can help us fill these vacancies. Our District needs YOU!! A big thank you to all the clubs that help support our Meadows of Hope with their yearly donations, with the Okmulgee Lions Club and the Pocola Lions Club being two of those who do so. And to all the clubs that turn in used eyeglasses. I know some clubs count the pairs of glasses and some clubs weigh them, but either way, we are giving back! Many of our clubs have been very busy. Broken Bow Lions have been honoring their Seniors and their 93yr old member Lion Billie Tomlinson. Fairland Lions have been honoring their students. Muskogee County Lions are working on their February 27th Chili Luncheon Fundraiser at the Shrine Temple. Okmulgee Lions raised over $1100 for Salvation Army ringing the bells, turned in 278 pairs of glasses, and celebrated with their Annual Sweetheart Banquet on February 14th. Okmulgee Lions also presented Diamond Centennial Membership pins to: PDG Dean Craig, Lion Beth Flud, and Lion Raymond Kennedy. Pocola Lions are working on their upcoming Annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 2nd, from 8-10am, to raise funds for their Melvin Jones and White Cane funds. The Wagoner Lions are working on their 10th Annual Bowling Tournament for Saturday, February 23rd. Clayton Lions installed three new members. McAlester Lions inducted two new members and Wilburton Lions had two new members. Please continue working on sponsoring new members to your clubs to help our District grow so that we can continue to serve! I am glad to say that I have started re-visiting some clubs in our District. So if you would like to have me visit, please let me know so that I can put you on my schedule. 2

News from Darlene Schultz, MD3 GMT DO YOU WANT NEW MEM- BERS? They say that if you talk about it, they will come. Since 1973, there has been a gradual shift away from maledominated clubs and also there is a shift in the workplace. There is very subtle trends to a higher participation of women in many work areas and Lions must also seek out the participation of young, professional women to keep our Lions Clubs relevant and strong. There is an infinite number of possibilities when we talk about Lions and what you can say. Depending on the situation, you can share a personal story or one you may have heard or a fact you may have heard at a training. Most of the time, possibilities will often present themselves naturally to you. I have seen some of the intergenerational struggle of the clubs I have worked with and Lions must maintain a tasteful standard of professionalism. Communication is the very solution to bridging the gap among the generations. Lions should stay relevant and continue to serve the needs of the 21 st Century Lions and Lions must change with the times after all, we can t afford to hire Tiger Woods. There have been times when simply talking about Lions is not enough. Many people will need to hear the What s in it for me? As we all know, there are so many ways an individual can benefit from Lions. If someone needs a specific anecdote, you can offer an example of how Lions has helped you or you can share an experience from your club members. Of course, the reason you joined might not be the same reason another person will join. When some people might need a little nudge, you don t want to push too hard or you might push someone away. Invite the person and walk into the meeting together. After you have made the initial effort, check in with the guest, but then let them make the next step. You can help your new member develop their skills, while increasing your club s membership and possibly provide a fresh prospective to your club. Never let your new member serve alone; you are responsible to your new member for one year and a day from the date of induction. You should always see to it that they are aware of why they are serving and for whom they are serving. Be on your guard unless you should let a new member fall by the wayside. Heaven forbid!!!! At this writing of District 3-NW Oklahoma Lion Newsletter our Mid-Winter convention is this coming Saturday February 23 rd at Langston University. However, when everyone in our District reads this Newsletter, it will have ended and everyone will be looking forward to 3-SW s Mid-Winter Convention in Ada. I will for a moment fast forward from the day that I m writing this and ask a couple of simple questions. 1) What did you learn from the Panel Discussion from 4 Wonderful LION Mentors? (ID Stephen Thornton, PID Pat Shurley, PCC Charles Michael and Lion Rebecca Thornton). If you were in attendance, you would now know how LIONS came to be, Where Lions are TODAY. Where Lions are headed in the FU- TURE, And the Role that WOMEN LIONS will have NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. I will have more about our Mid-Winter Convention next time. Just as an FYI to all District 3-NW I want to touch on an ISSUE OF IM- PORTANCE. If you were a Club that came to the 3-NW Mid-Winter Convention and did not get to vote in the elections I would like to give you a possible reason why. For the 2 nd Half of your LCI Dues, each club received an electronic statement in December for the club dues owed. If payment for those dues are not received and posted by Feb 8 your Club is considered NOT IN GOOD STANDING. This means that your club is not eligible to participate in any district or state elections. Now I have a HEADS-UP FOR ALL CLUBS NOT ONLY IN DISTRICT 3- NW BUT ALL CLUBS IN OKLA- HOMA. It s time for ALL CLUB PRESIDENTS to appoint a nomination committee to submit the names of candidates for various club offices. A nomination meeting shall be held in MARCH of each year. An ELECTION SHALL BE HELD IN APRIL. The SECRETARY SHALL PROMPTLY REPORT THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS TO THE INTERNA- TIONAL OFFICE WITHIN 15 DAYS OF THE ELECTION. (The form is now known as 2019-2020 LIONS CLUBS OFFICER REPORTING FORM also previously known as PU- 101. (Found in very tiny print at the bottom of the form)). This is in accordance with the International Constitution and By-Laws. CLUB ACTIVITIES IN 3-NW STILLWATER NOON LIONS: Collected personal hygiene items for Stillwater High School in need through the Pioneer Pantry. Many students are homeless or couch hopping from one friend s home to another. The items are collected in wooden crates built by the Westwood pack chartered by the Stillwater Noon Lions. They served meals at the Thursday Night Community Dinners and provided eye exams and eyeglasses for 8 individuals. The Club donated $500 to the Oklahoma WON- DERTORIUM so Meadows of Hope families could spend two evenings at the children s museum. LAVERNE LIONS: Reported nut purchases were $2834.54. They also sent $100 to the Harper Co. Jr. Livestock Show. Lion David Cook was presented a Melvin Jones Fellow plaque for his untiring work for over 40 years as a Lion. They served a meal at the Ag Barn for the Harper Co. Jr. Livestock Show on February 11 th. LOMEGA LIONS: Reported helping and housing local Food Bank which added another freezer this time. They also reported they finished another successful local fundraiser which the Local Food Bank was a winner of a $500 prize. PONCA CITY NOON LIONS: Sold slabs of ribs and donated all proceeds to the Pediatric Cancer Unit at OU Children s Hospital. CASHION LIONS: A 20 year chevron was presented to Lion Lane Broadbent and a 30 year chevron to PDG Russell Adams 0n Feb. 13 th. Cashion now meets on the second Wednesday of the month at the Cashion High School. COVINGTON LIONS CLUB: In December they put on the Covington Christmas Festival. Santa was there so the kids told Santa what they wanted. Money was given to the kids thru drawings. They gave 15 turkeys to the community. Everyone enjoyed cookies donated by the Churches of Covington and Lion members. On February 1 st the Covington Lions Club hosted a Pancake supper. Proceeds went to Roy Scott s family FAIRVIEW LIONS CLUB: Gained a new member Lion Darrel Gosney. His Sponsor was Lion Dewayne Cravens. They re-instated one member Lion Butch Edingfield. UP COMING EVENTS; Burger & Fries fund Raiser. The Club will be awarding 4 Scholarships and the Gloss Mountains Car Show on August 31 (Continued on page 7) 4

We were honored to make presentations to Lion Larry Maples who marked membership milestones Norman Sooner Lions also include longtime members John Kent, John Hester, Gary Tyler, Doug Hayes, William Blankenship and Brent Morey, who recently received membership chevrons. Lawton Leos were guests of Oklahoma Council of the Blind and were will complete 60 years as a Lion in May, John Michalicka, who has been a Lion for 36 years, and Eldon McDaniel, 15 years, and Glenda McDaniel, 20 years. The club posts flags at businesses and public places each holiday and honors students each month. They recently had a Chili Cook-Off. Two great clubs share the city of Norman. Norman Lions are preparing for new projects and recently recognized membership milestones. The club is 99 years old and recounts their interesting history at e- clubhouse.org/ sites/ normanok. recently. The club supports the local Food and Shelter project and other programs. Two members attended the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute. Wanette Lions have Bingo Night the first Saturday of each month at 6 p.m. at Wanette Senior Citizens Center, 103 W. Main. Ada Lions celebrated another class of graduates from Lions Quest training, and student honorees from Byng, along with numerous other students they find noteworthy. Frederick Lions Club has a long tradition of selecting and honoring the town s Most Useful Citizen each year. What a great idea! Their useful members honored for their assistance during the Council s state convention. Chickasha Lions continue to support their community with partnerships with the Historical Society, the Salvation Army, Pregnancy Counseling Center, Football Boosters, County Fair Tractor Pull, and Weekend Backpacks for students, as well as their own eyeglasses program. Lawton Lions made a big event of 6

Shawnee Leos are helping families by collecting diapers and other baby items for Legacy Parenting, an agency where parents can learn skills and earn supplies for their little ones. Shawnee Lions accepted into membership Willis Snowden, director of REACT Ambulance Service, and put him to work demonstrating what is involved in covering 1,000 square miles of territory. The club also aided the Shawnee High School Basketball Invitational Tournament by staffing the concession stand. guests of Lion Jamie Doud at Seminole Lions recently. Pocasset Lions presented Student of the Month Awards for Amber- Pocasset Elementary, Junior High and Senior High students and once again aided the Weekend Backpack program. Lawton Noon Lions will present a Spring High Tea fundraiser on April 20 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Spend an afternoon enjoying classical piano and serenading by a barbershop quartet at the Prairie Building of the Comanche County Fairgrounds, 920 Sheridan Road. The event will benefit The Hungry Hearts Food Ministry. A silent auction is included. Tickets are $25 each or two for $45. Hats and fascinators will be worn. At their second meeting of the month their guests included January Student of the month, Aneesha Saeed. She was accompanied by her mother Naheeda Amir. Their guest speaker for the evening was Marie Burns, Executive Director of Oklahoma Lions Service Foundation. They worked the gates of the Chisholm High School Wheat Capital Basketball Tournament Donna DeLise, Breane Griffith, Collin Wilborn, Deborah Sweazea and Austin Greaves, Alliance- Health department heads were Thank you to those serving on the MD 3 Constitution and By-Laws Committee who spent a Saturday working together to update the language of our documents, and discussing ways to improve it to serve us better. Extra kudos to Kent Clovis for his study and preparation, Pat Shurley for herding Kim Coleman, club secretary of the North Enid Lions received a Melvin Jones Fellowship at the meeting last night.

In the event the Council determines that the elected Council Chairperson is unable to perform his/her duties, the Council shall appoint the Vice Council Chairperson as the acting Council Chairperson. The Vice Council Chairperson has no official duties, responsibilities, authority or vote until the Council has declared him/her to be Council Chairperson. SECTION 3. ELECTED POSITIONS. (a) The Council Chairperson shall be a Past District Governor who has served within the past 5 years and shall be elected for a one-year term and shall not serve in that capacity again. D (b) The Vice Council Chairperson shall be a Past District Governor who has served within the past 5 years. The Vice Council Chairperson may be asked to facilitate a meeting at the request of the seated Council Chairperson. A Vice Council Chairperson who has served for a majority of a term as Council Chairperson may not serve in that capacity again. 8
