Parker, Minister of Music 202-829-5511 www.peopleschurchucc.org Follow us on Twitter @PeoplesCongUCC March 2019 MINISTER S MESSAGE What does it mean to be a Christian? I suspect most of the answers would involve something about believing in Jesus, believing Jesus is God s only son, believing Jesus was born of a virgin, accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, etc. Basically, being a Christian has come to mean affirming a set of statements regarding the person of Jesus. Ironically, that is likely the last thing Jesus the person, as we find him captured in the Gospels, would have wanted people to do. For Jesus, being a follower of his (the term Christian was not known to Jesus, or his first followers), meant literally, following him. In Jesus day there were men who wandered the little villages and desert of the Galilee teaching various ideas about life and God, or the Gods (for some there was more than one God). John the Baptist is an example of one of these men wandering the countryside preaching about personal radical change ( repentance ). In fact, one of the few things we can know for certain about Jesus is, he was a follower of John, a Johanian if you will, for the first part of his life. After John died, Jesus took up his mantle however he expanded John s message beyond one of personal radical change, to radical change on a personal and social level. Jesus message was so effective, it began to disturb the powers that be, both religious and secular. Some of the Temple authorities didn t like what he was doing, and word got to the Roman authorities that Jesus was a petty nuisance that they d do better to eliminate rather than tolerate. So, Jesus was killed, by the Romans, for being a subversive. And as the saying goes, the rest is history that is, our story, the story of the followers of Jesus, who took his name by way of the title he acquired as his followers recalled his life and tried to make sense of it: Christ, Greek for Messiah, Hebrew for the chosen one. So, we are Christ-ians, literally Christ-folk. So what does that mean? Well, if we take Jesus life as the model, to be a Christian-ian means nothing about what you believe (it was said Jesus once told someone the demons believe, and tremble ), belief is in some sense beside the point. To be a Christ person, is to follow Christ, to follow in his footsteps, to do what he did. And when it was summed up what he did, it simply was said of him: he went about doing good, so much good that many concluded if God were to take human form, surely God would bev like Jesus: the Word (God) became flesh and dwelt among us. So, here we are, Christ-ians, Christ person, perhaps, that is, if we follow him and commit to going about doing good.

MISSION AND VISION OF THE CHURCH MISSION OF THE CHURCH The Mission of Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is: To worship God and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to labor for peace and justice so that the world may become the kingdom of God on earth; To foster within its membership, by its teaching and its ministry, the spirit which was in Christ; To be to its membership and the community a source of spiritual refreshment, guidance, transformation, comfort and support; To impress upon its membership the need for mutual loyalty and charity; VISION OF THE CHURCH so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individually we are members of one another. (Romans 12:5 NRSV) Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is a progressive Christian community called by faith, led by hope, and united by love to build strong and committed disciples for Jesus Christ and to be a spiritual presence locally and globally in service to humanity. This vision is lived out through our focus on relationship with the Lord, which produces perspective; scholarship in study of the Scriptures, which produces focus; stewardship awareness in our giving and sharing which produces trust; and fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ, which produces unity. To teach its young people the noble traditions of its past; to point them to the possibilities of its future, and to give guidance in the building of Christian character; and Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it, for there is a vision for the appointed time (Habakkuk 2:2-3 NRSV) To educate and develop its members for consecrated and sacrificial service. 2

2019 MONTHLY MEMORY VERSES (FROM THE REVISED STANDARD VERSION) Jan Nov January:.God who created all things; that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. (Eph 3:1-12) February:...For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. (1 Cor 15:1-15) June:...I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. (John 17:20-26) July: Bear one another s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. 3 For if any one thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. (Gal 6:1-6)7-16 March: when a man turns to the Lord the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding [a] the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Cor 3:12-4:2) April:.. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. (Phil 3:4b-14) May:.Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go. (John21:1-19) August...Man, who made me a judge or divider over you? And he said to them, Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. (Luke 12:13-21) September: Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Heb 13:1-8,15-16) October: If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you. (Luke 17:5-10) November: We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.(2 Thess 1:1-4,11-12) March 2019 LECTIONARY READINGS March 3 Last Sunday after Epiphany Astounding Glory Old Testament: Ex 34:29-35 Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 Epistle: 2 Cor 3:12-4:2 ******************************************* March 10 First Sunday of Lent Wilderness Companions Old Testament: Ps 91:1-2,9-16 Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Epistle: Romans 10:8b-13 *********************************************** March 17 Second Sunday of Lent Strong and Tender Old Testament: Ps 27 Gospel: Luke 13:31-35 Epistle: March 24 Third Sunday of Lent Open Invitation Old Testament: Ps 63:1-8 Gospel: Luke 13:1-9 Epistle: 1 Cor 10:1-13 ************************************************** March31 Fourth Sunday of Lent Embracing Love Old Testament: Ps 5:9-12 Gospel: Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 Epistle: 2Cor 5:16-21 6
