Dr. Ronald E. Hopson Designated Senior Minister Rev. Venita - Enola George Assistant Minister Clyde T. Parker, Minister of Music Follow us on September MINISTER S MESSAGE A few Sundays ago I raised the question: on what bases do we decide how to live. I suggested we use as a guide the prayer of King Solomon upon his ascension to the throne in Israel. Solomon recognized his father David as the past upon which now he Solomon would build; he acknowledged his own limitations--- I do not know how to go out or come in; and he sought to be ever mindful of the impact of his decisions upon others. The three pillars of Solomon s living: History, Humility, Community. I want to suggest that is our challenge and opportunity here at Peoples. This is a church of significant history. As such, our temptation will be to both overvalue and undervalue that history. The challenge will be to discern when to continue on the path set by that history, and when to shift to new approaches and even new paradigms. Perhaps humility and community are the appropriate contexts within which to do such discernment. Are we recognizing the limits of what the past provided, and the impact of past decisions upon the quality of the church community? Are we, as individual actors, as well as a part of the larger body, recognizing the limits of our own perspectives, and giving way to others in a gesture of self-emptying modeled by Jesus both in his life and on the cross. And finally, are we taking seriously table fellowship, open commensality (as Biblical Studies folk would say it), extravagant unconditioned welcome (as UCC folk would say it), the primacy of the just community, as the defining characteristic of our faith. The new church year is here. Decisions await us. Will we follow the prayer of Solomon, and might I say, the faith of Jesus?
2 MISSION AND VISION OF THE CHURCH MISSION OF THE CHURCH The Mission of Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is: To worship God and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to labor for peace and justice so that the world may become the kingdom of God on earth; To foster within its membership, by its teaching and its ministry, the spirit which was in Christ; To be to its membership and the community a source of spiritual refreshment, guidance, transformation, comfort and support; To impress upon its membership the need for mutual loyalty and charity; VISION OF THE CHURCH so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individually we are members of one another. (Romans 12:5 NRSV) Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is a progressive Christian community called by faith, led by hope, and united by love to build strong and committed disciples for Jesus Christ and to be a spiritual presence locally and globally in service to humanity. This vision is lived out through our focus on relationship with the Lord, which produces perspective; scholarship in study of the Scriptures, which produces focus; stewardship awareness in our giving and sharing which produces trust; and fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ, which produces unity. To teach its young people the noble traditions of its past; to point them to the possibilities of its future, and to give guidance in the building of Christian character; and Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it, for there is a vision for the appointed time (Habakkuk 2:2-3 NRSV) To educate and develop its members for consecrated and sacrificial service. 2

Barbara Breland, Designated Pastor, Lincoln Temple Congregational UCC. Attendance at the retreat is $60 for the retreat and meals or $175 for the retreat, meals and overnight stay. The retreat is sponsored in conjunction with the Women's Fellowship. My family will be eternally grateful for the love, prayers, visits, calls, cards and encouragement our Peoples church family gave us during the courageous struggle and transition of our beloved A. Thomas Baity, Deacon Emeritus. When Tom could no longer attend church, Deacon Albertha Workman planned a worship service in our home which was attended by a contingent of Deacons. When his condition became grave, he received visits from Rev. Hopson, Rev. George, Deacons Workman, Joe Young, Lucille Herring and Geneva Hudson. Tom's Home Going on August 3 was wonderful, highlighted by the beautiful music of Esther Williams Yarborough and Gwen Jenifer and the eloquent eulogy of Rev. Rubin Tendai, followed by the deacons' repast. Thank you Peoples Church for the blessings throughout the years of our membership, most especially now. Dorothea Baity, Deidre Baity Sykes, 3 Thank you For the prayers, inspiring cards, telephone calls and visits during my recovery. Your kindness will always be remembered.
