Our Vision: A world where people experience God s love and are made whole. Our Mission: To share love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. Choral Evensong Thursday, October 20, 2016

Evensong Thursday in Twenty-Third Week after Pentecost 20 October 2016 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end of working day and prepares for approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in 16 th century, as part of simplification of services in newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on business of past day, to pray for world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of music is offered to help us set our lives in light of eternity; same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Opening Sentence Preces Officiant The people stand as procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Herbert Howells Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost; As it was in beginning, is now and ever shall be, world out end. A men. Praise ye Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Hymn 25 Sung by all. The Eighth Tune text: Greek, 3rd cent.; tr. F. Bland Tucker (1895-1984); para. Of O Gracious Light; music: Thomas Tallis (1505?-1585); adapt. Hymnal 1982. Psalm 59:1 20 Sung by choir, people sit. Luke Flintoft (BCP, p. 765-67)

Hosea 14:1 7 The Readings The Magnificat The people stand. Henry Purcell Magnificat and Nunc dimittis G minor My soul doth magnify Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on m that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength his arm; he hath scattered proud in imagination of ir hearts. He hath put down mighty from ir seat, and hath exalted humble and meek. He hath filled hungry good things, and rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefars, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world out end. Amen. Luke 1:45 55 2 Timothy 4:1-8 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Purcell Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before face of all people, To be a light to lighten Gentiles, and to be glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world out end. Amen. Luke 2:29 32 Homily The people sit. The Apostles Creed All Sung by all on a monotone, while standing. I believe in God, Far almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by Holy Ghost, born of Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on right hand of God Far almighty. From nce he shall come to judge quick and dead. I believe in Holy Ghost, holy catholic Church, communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of body, and life everlasting. Amen. 2

Officiant The Lord s Prayer The Suffrages The Collects Officiant The Lord be you. And thy spirit. The Prayers Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Our Far, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this Land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon e. Endue thy ministers righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because re is none or that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts in us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by officiant. Howells Howells Howells Anm The people sit. Sung in Latin. Francis Poulenc Closing Prayers Rejoice in God our helper: sing aloud to God of Jacob. Take psalm and bring hir timbrel: merry harp lute. Blow trumpet in new moon, even on our solemn feast day. Psalm 81:1 3 The people may kneel. 3

The Readings Hosea 14:1 7 Return, O Israel, to Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity. Take words you and return to Lord; say to him, Take away all guilt; accept that which is good, and we will offer fruit of our lips. Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses; we will say no more, Our God, to work of our hands. In you orphan finds mercy. I will heal ir disloyalty; I will love m freely, for my anger has turned from m. I will be like dew to Israel; he shall blossom like lily, he shall strike root like forests of Lebanon. His shoots shall spread out; his beauty shall be like olive tree, and his fragrance like that of Lebanon. They shall again live beneath my shadow, y shall flourish as a garden; y shall blossom like vine, ir fragrance shall be like wine of Lebanon. 2 Timothy 4:1-8 In presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge living and dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim message; be persistent wher time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, utmost patience in teaching. For time is coming when people will not put up sound doctrine, but having itching ears, y will accumulate for mselves teachers to suit ir own desires, and will turn away from listening to truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and time of my departure has come. I have fought good fight, I have finished race, I have kept faith. From now on re is reserved for me crown of righteousness, which Lord, righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
