CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ JUNE 5, 2016 Liturgy Expectations and Obligations What does the church expect of us when we come to Mass? The Church s highest teaching on Liturgy, another word for Mass is the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. It answers the question of what is expected of us in one word: participation. And not just in some half-hearted manner. It calls for full, conscious and active participation and it says we have both a right and an obligation to that participation. (SC 14) Prayer of St. Thomas More: Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for. Our warmest welcome to all who worship with our parish family, whether long time registered or newly arrived in the parish. If you are not registered, please stop by the Parish Office and pick up a registration form. For your convenience a drop box is located outside the Parish Office front doors if you wish to leave paperwork when the office is closed. Please do not leave checks or cash. Participation demands involvement and concentration, two things that are in short supply in these days of TV screens everywhere and constant cell phone interruptions. You may have heard the phrase Sunday obligation when referring to the Mass. But you may not realize how that obligation is explained by the Church. In the Code of Canon Law (1274) it says On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. We are NOT obliged to GO to Mass; that s not enough. The Sunday obligation kicks in after we get there. We are obliged to participate. Participation involves both actions and intention. It implies the actions of making responses, singing songs, assuming postures and making gestures. But it also implies an intention behind these actions. Some people visibly participate, but perhaps they lack inner concentration (the conscious part of full, active and conscious participation ). That s nothing new. Jesus himself said These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matt 15:8) On the other hand, some people pray very intently at Mass, but they do not join in the actions, they don t make the responses, they don t sing, they won t receive Communion under both forms of the Body and Blood. They may be praying, but you may not know it by looking at them, because they are missing the active part of full, conscious and active participation. Let s participate fully consciously and actively when we come to Mass! That fulfills our Sunday obligation. Steve Raml Liturgy & Music Director The Sunday Arizona Republic is sold after Sunday Masses for $2.00. Your purchase helps support Youth Ministry programs. PARISH OFFICE EVENING RECEPTIONIST POSITION Applications are now available in the Parish Office for this position which will become available in September. Also available is the information sheet outlining the description and responsibilities of the position. Interviews will begin mid-july and the successful candidate will begin training in August. Please call the Parish Office with any questions. the Church. For the second summer I ll be offering evenings of reflection for anyone who wants to Grow in Faith (so they can Act in Love ). Once a month, Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. in June 21: Priest Prophet & King Rediscovering Our Baptism (Fr. Paul Turner video presentation) July 5: Pope Francis and the Care of Our Common Home (Teri Raml on Pope Francis Encyclical Laudato Si ) August 2: Why We Sing What We Sing When We Sing the Mass (Steve Raml on the power of music for mass) These topics may change, but the nights should not change, this is what we are planning.

Adult Formation LIFE OUT OF DEATH Our readings today harken back to Easter, the power of God to bring life out of death. By means of Elijah, God restored life to a child, the apostle Paul, once an angle of death amid the Church, preaches the gospel he once tried to destroy, Jesus raises the only son of the widow of Nain! Yet in a world littered with corpses, the sign of the resurrection remains an alien sign. Authentic raisings remain but a flash in the pan, an all too brief beacon on deaths horizon. Are widow s sons yet alive? Is the apostle to the Gentiles still preaching faith? Even those who once stood in awe at the astonishing power of God have now gone to their graves and await with each of us the consummation of their hope and ours. Death will lay claim to us soon enough, and then what will become of our hope? It is in the context that the gospel is proclaimed. The gospel of Jesus Christ is announced in the midst of death. But it is in the context of death that the gospel exercises its greatest power! TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CDA UPDATE We are moving ever so slowly toward our parish goal of $148,000 for the Charity and Development Appeal. We are at 90.0%. The CDA is the means by which we join in the efforts of the larger church to provide the many services and education opportunities that are beyond the scope of individual parishes. Please consider making a gift if you have not already done so. There are donation cards in the vestibule and there is a link to the CDA secure donation site on our parish website. Thank you for your support of the CDA. ST. THOMAS MORE 20th ANNIVERSARY PARISH PHOTO DIRECTORY Without YOU our new parish directory won t be complete! Be part of our 20 th anniversary parish directory and receive a complementary 8x10 portrait and directory. Will there come a day when we are stunned by such glory that moves all people to glorify God as on Easter morning? Can it be that one day in a world strewn with corpses the promise of the gospel will be realized in the flesh? This is my body given for you. This is my blood shed for you. Even now, even here, we taste a bit of Easter. Here God feeds us. Christ in, with, and under the forms of bread and wine. Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection unto eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ. Earth. Ashes. Dust. These are in common with the stuff of bread and wine. These are the elements common to us, redeemed by the crucified and risen Christ. In this great feast, we, like the widow s son, are restored to the one out of whose pain we were born. God is glorified! Mary Ann Ronan ANDRÉ HOUSE SUMMER POWDERED DRINK DRIVE Andre House is in need of individual packets of powdered Gatorade, Powerade or similar beverage to be given out with bottled water to their guests.
