PRELUDE Menuetto GF Handel Renae Easely, pianist, Rachel Heikkinen, viola INVOCATION OPENING RESPONSES--" Acknowledge our Sins." Pastor: To sin is mortal. Only God is perfect. People: One of our weaknesses is our failure to recognize our spiritual limitations and the inevitableness of sin. Pastor: One of our common sins is the self-satisfaction that we are not as other people. People: The self-righteous are farther from the Kingdom of God than the penitent sinner. Pastor: Honest, searching, examination of our faith, of our religious beliefs, and of our sincerity, is necessary at times to discover and to acknowledge our sins of what we have done and what we have left undone. CALL TO WORSHIP Joel 2:13 Pastor: Rend your hearts and not your clothing. People: Return to the Lord, your God. Pastor: For God is gracious and merciful, God is slow to anger. People: God is abounding in steadfast love, and he relents from punishing. Pastor: Come let us draw near to God! HYMN: Jesus I Will Ponder Now LSB 440 Stz 1, 5, 6 2
WORDS OF EXHORTATION As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I ask you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. The One who knew no sin, so that in Christ, this very One, we might become the righteousness of God. For God says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you and helped you on the day of salvation." Now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation. FIRST LESSON Joel 2:1-2, 12-17a The Message PSALM OF CONFESSION: Psalm 51 (p. 405) People: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Time for Silent Prayer) ABSOLUTION APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, 3
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. IMPOSITION OF THE ASHES Pastor: May these ashes be to us, O God, an acknowledgment of our wrongdoing and our acceptance of your forgiveness. People: In these ashes are : our prejudices, our impatience, the times we have turned our backs on the suffering of others, our neglect of the environment, our indifference, our materialism, our greed, our hypocrisy, our envy, all our sins. Pastor: In these ashes of repentance may we daily be reminded that Jesus faced our sins for us on the cross. May God create within each of us a clean heart and a new and right spirit. (When you receive communion you have the option to have ashes placed on your forehead.) WORDS OF OUR LORD LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; 5

Dr. Tom Acton, pastortom@ilcp.org, Principal, Delaine Schiestel, dschiestel@ilcp.org Director of Worship and Music, Brenda Glawe, bglawe@ilcp.org Holy Communion is offered to those who have been instructed in what the Scriptures teach about Communion. We believe the Bible teaches: 1) Jesus Christ is our only Lord and Savior from all sin, death, and the power of evil; 2) the Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that with the bread and wine we receive His Body and Blood; and 3) we resolve to dedicate our lives to the service of our Lord in His Body, the Church, through worship, sacrificial giving, and thankful living. The center of the individual cup trays contains non-alcoholic wine for those who prefer this substitute. Gluten-free communion wafers are available.
