Carry the Cross Bless Orphans and Vulnerable Children Through Your Parish s Lenten Outreach ACTIVITY GUIDE As your school or parish embarks on its 40-day journey to raise money to help orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya, we pray you ll find the following activity guide helpful. There are fundraising ideas, prayers for orphans around the world, Bible verses to memorize and Scripture readings to share. We encourage parents to work through these activities with their children throughout the Lenten observance. Getting Started This activity guide was created to enrich the Lenten observance for Catholic families. It was designed to be used alongside the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops Liturgical Calendar. The Read and Reflect sections are based on Sunday Mass readings throughout the 40 days of Lent that culminate in the celebration of Easter. Some of the activities, such as the and the Orphan Fact and Prayer, can be done as a family. Throughout the week, families, schools and parishes can join together in fundraising activities. We encourage you to be creative in your use of this guide, incorporating your own ideas to enrich your experience. When you do, please email Cross Catholic Outreach and tell us about your Lenten observance!

WEEK 1 Scripture Reading: Luke 4:1-13 In this reading, we learn of Jesus temptation while he was fasting in the desert for 40 days. As we enter this prolonged season of fasting and praying on behalf of vulnerable children, it is inspiring to know that when our Lord was faced with trials, he could rely on the Word of God and the Holy Spirit s presence to strengthen and empower him. We have the same sources of power and peace! Reflection: Make a commitment to pray the rosary with your children every day for the next 40 days. As you do, please remember the orphans who are in desperate need of comfort from the Holy Mother. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. ~ Deuteronomy 26:10 Fundraising Activity: Collection Boxes Since much of the campaign will involve fundraising, have the children begin by making collection boxes, which they will keep at home to collect the money they raise during the week. Take a small cardboard box (such as an empty tissue box) or an empty container (such as a milk carton) and decorate it with beads, colored paper and photos of children from old magazines. While they are making the collection boxes, share some meaningful information with them about the orphans and vulnerable children helped through the campaign. This way, the children will be familiar with the project they are raising money for during the rest of the Lenten countdown. About 815 million people around the globe are hungry, including many orphaned and vulnerable children. (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2016) Father, in your wisdom you have made us dependent on one another, and so we pray for the starving millions in our world. Help us find ways to share our resources so no one hungers at the table of life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

WEEK 2 Scripture Reading: Genesis 15:5-12 Just as Abram believed and trusted in God s promises, we can have faith in God s many promises to provide for us. The blessings we receive through Christ are as innumerable as the stars. Reflection: Have your family members count their blessings by making a list of the things they are thankful for. As your hearts overflow with gratitude for all God has done, consider how you can be a blessing to those in need. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. ~ Philippians 3:21 Fundraising Activity: The Reward of Remembrance Have each member of your family work on memorizing this week s verse. At the end of each day, challenge every person to say it aloud and put a coin in the collection box for each word they get right. Around the world, there are 61 million children of primary school age not getting an education. (UNICEF, 2017) Our Creator and Heavenly Father, we pray for all the orphans and abandoned children in this world. Father, watch over these children and bless them with your great mercy and love. Comfort them when they are lonely, feed them when they are hungry, help them be educated. Heal them when they are sick or with fever, protect them and give them a safe place to lay their heads at night, and give these children comfort and peace. In the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

WEEK 3 Scripture Reading: Luke 13:1-9 In this reading, Jesus reminds us that our lives should bear good fruit. Reflection: In many places, orphans and vulnerable children are marginalized and forgotten by society, but we can bear good fruit by sharing God s mercy with them. Put a coin in your collection box as you remember these children. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:12 Fundraising Activity: Cookbooks for Kenya Families will contribute meatless recipes to create a Lenten cookbook that is perfect for this season of fasting. Sell these cookbooks to raise money for poor children in Kenya. Nearly 17 million children under the age of 18 are AIDS orphans. (USAID, 2016) Heavenly Father, we pray for all children who have been orphaned by AIDS. May you be with them and comfort them. Give them favor in the eyes of relatives and neighbors, so they will be accepted and cared for. If they are sick, ease their pain and bring caregivers into their lives who will help them and give them the medical care they need. Most of all, Lord, let them know they are not alone but that you are with them each day. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 15:11-32 In Luke 15, Jesus tells the parable of the prodigal son, revealing how our Heavenly Father rejoices when one lost child returns to him. Reflection: This week, get up a little bit earlier than usual and spend five minutes praying for God to reveal ways you can share God s love with others. Remember to pray for the orphans and vulnerable children helped through this campaign too! For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:21 Fundraising Activity: Strands of Prayer Create rosaries using the colors of the Kenyan flag (see explanation at right). The black and red beads represent Christ s death and shed blood, while the green beads tell of resurrection and new life. These beautiful pieces literally allow us to carry the cross, reminding us to lift the poor up in prayer. Sell these rosaries for $2 apiece, and have the children explain their meaning. Around the world, 30 million children have been displaced from their homes due to war and violence. (UNICEF, 2018) Father, we lift up the millions of children around the world who have been affected by war in places such as Afghanistan and South Sudan. Put a hedge of protection around these precious children so that no harm will come to them. Comfort them and help them to not be afraid of what is going on around them. Give them peace knowing that you are in control of their desperate situations, and bring peace to their lands. We ask all this in your holy name, Lord. Amen. WEEK 4 STRING YOUR OWN ROSARIES Supplies: You ll need several yards of thick string or chord; red, black and green beads; and stringable crosses. Directions: Put one end of the string through the top of the cross and tie a knot to secure it. You will have one short end sticking out as you continue to work along the length of the strand. Select one color for the Our Father beads, one for the Hail Mary beads and one for the decades. The pattern is as follows: 1 Our Father Bead 3 Hail Mary Beads 1 Our Father Bead Empty Space (about the size of one bead) 10 Decade Beads x 4 groups 1 Our Father Bead 10 Decade Beads Finish the rosary by tying the end to the Empty Space, securing it with a double knot. Trim any excess string. Dab the knots with glue to keep them from coming untied.

Scripture Reading: Luke 19:28-40 WEEK 5 WEEK 5 Jesus Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem marks the beginning of Holy Week. Reflection: The people who cried Hosanna! would shout Crucify him! a few days later. In your life, do you praise God one moment and sin in the next minute? Examine your heart, ask for forgiveness, and pray for the Lord s help in worshiping him in all your words and actions. So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ~ Philippians 2:10-11 Fundraising Activity: Garments of Praise In the spirit of sacrifice, families will do some spring cleaning and sort through their closets. Have everyone identify a few items of clothing they are willing to part with, and then sell these items to a local consignment store. This activity teaches children to give selflessly. It also symbolizes the exchange of old things for brandnew garments of praise! An estimated 140 million children have lost one parent or both parents. (UNICEF, 2015) God, we come to you right now asking for protection for the millions of vulnerable children struggling to survive in the streets. Put a hedge of protection around them and keep them safe from exploitation and violence. Give them hope for the future and comfort in knowing that you will never leave or forsake them. We ask this in Jesus precious name. Amen.

WEEK 6 WEEK 6 Scripture Reading: John 19:1-42; 20:1-18 This passage details Jesus sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the dead, opening the way to eternal life for the world. We are to follow his example by making sacrifices for others. Reflection: This week, practice sacrifice for others around you. Sacrifice a few hours to help at the local food bank, or eat at home instead of at a restaurant and place the money your family saves in the collection box. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. ~ Luke 24:5 Fundraising Activity: Holy Week Hunt We should always be aware of Christ around us! This week, families will be on the lookout for items that are significant to Holy Week. Place a coin in the collection box each time you see: A cross. A palm frond. An image of Mary. A metal nail. A donkey picture or toy. A flower with thorns. Try to find each item at least once a day! Each day 15,000 children die, mostly from preventable or treatable illnesses. (World Health Organization, 2018) Lord, we come before you to ask that you protect the precious orphans around the world who are dealing with the recent loss of their parents. Give them strength to face a new day, peace to overcome their fears and your love so they know they are never alone. Bring caring adults into their lives to take care of them, and help them to grow up strong and in your love. We ask this in the name of our Heavenly Father. Amen.

Our Mission We mobilize the global Catholic Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the glory of Jesus Christ. How We Serve Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries allows us to support the Church s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities. Good Stewardship We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach. These detailed accountability measures have earned us ongoing accreditation by the following organizations: Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred through June 30, 2019, the close of our ministry s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry. 2700 N.
