Those of us who accompanied he spouses ino own endured he shopping fever and a much more subdued Papas and Beer and Hussongs crowd han we have seen in previous years. Members ha aended he annual meeing somewha groaned a he Presiden s suggesion of anoher convenion in Laughlin, Nevada for 2011. Yeah, is warmer bu here has GOT o be anoher desinaion ha has more han a casino or wo. Some members suggesed ha we hold he nex (2011) Convenion on a cruise o Alaska! Sacrameno was deemed he bes bang for he buck for ineresing hoel convenion venue and he proximiy of fun aracions. Ulimaely, i was seleced by he res of he board for he 2011 MMOC Convenion sie. Our 2011 Convenion is going o be uniquely differen from our oher convenions, bu I know we will have a grea ime and I am sure our members will no ge bored or seasick! So i was ime o ge on he sick, as well as my compadre of he Norh, Bill Loveless (Saco CHP). So, we boh wen on fishing expediions and came up wih a couple of choices As I sared invesigaing our opions in he beauiful Monerey area, Direcor Loveless sared researching he doings around Sacrameno. Bill and I each visied a number of hoels and me wih he hoel managers o negoiae an affordable package for our members. Now ha we have decided where i is o be I ge o have he fun of coordinaing all he small suff. I plan on having a raffle a he dinner. So if anyone has suff you would like o donae please bring i wih you. Since he convenion is a few monhs away I will remind everyone again laer. In a previous aricle I menioned how I'm aking friends ou o dinner or if I'm ou wih a group of friends I pay for lunch. I do his o make myself feel good and o le my friends know how much I like hem. We're no geing any younger and who knows how much ime anyone has lef o say somehing nice o your friends and family. A friend of mine sen me an aricle ha fis me o a T. "I would never rade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flaer belly. As I've aged I've become kinder o myself, and less criical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don' chide myself for eaing ha exra cookie, or for no making my bed, or for buying ha silly cemen gecko ha I didn' need, bu looks so avane garde on my paio. I am eniled o a rea, o be messy, o be exravagan. I have seen oo many dear friends leave his world oo soon, before hey undersood he grea freedom ha comes wih aging. Whose business is i if I choose o read or play on he compuer unil 4 a.m. and sleep unil noon? I will dance wih myself o hose wonderful unes of he 60 & 70's, and if I, a he same ime, wish o weep over a los love...i will. I will walk he beach in a swim sui ha is sreched over a bulging body, and will dive ino he waves wih abandon if I choose o, despie he piying glances from he je se. They, oo, will ge old. I know I am someimes forgeful. Bu here again, some of life is jus as well forgoen. And I evenually remember he imporan hings. Sure, over he years my hear has been broken. How can your hear no break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pe ges hi by a car? Bu broken hears are wha give us srengh and undersanding and compassion. A hear never broken is prisine and serile and will never know he joy of being imperfec. I am so blessed o have lived long enough o have my hair uring gray and o have my youhful laughs be forever eched ino he deep groove on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before heir hair could urn silver. As you ge older, i is easier o be posiive. You care less abou wha oher people hink. I don' quesion myself anymore. I've even earned he righ o be wrong. So o answer your quesion, I like being old. I has se me free. I like he person I have become. I am no going o live forever, bu while I am sill here, I will no wase ime lamening wha could have been, or worrying abou wha will be. And I shall ea desser every single day (if I feel like i). Day rides will range from high mileage on relaively open roads, o shorer jauns on scenic back-roads shared by numerous fellow ouriss.
