H e r i t a g e Herald January 20, 2019 THIS WEEK: Dear Friends and Members, We held the class on Colossians on Wednesday evening again because of the construction on the church building. On Monday, construction started at 5:30 AM and continued until after midnight, knocking out the concrete floor in the foyer and in the back room where the new bathrooms will be constructed. On Tuesday, the concrete was poured for the foyer and the new bathrooms. On Wednesday, new lights were installed in the foyer. On changes in the auditorium Thursday, the framing of the bathrooms began. Friday was an inspection by the code enforcer. Following the inspection, plumbing and electric began, while at the same time, the painting of the foyer walls was begun. On Monday, Dr. Keith Main had an acute appendicitis attack. for the discerning THE SERVANTS OF THE LORD And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come (Luke 19:13). We are told that Jesus Christ is...lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful (Revelations 17:14). The Greek word for lord is kurios which signifies power, authority, and ownership. It is translated not only lord, but sometimes master, owner, and Sir. By its usage, we learn that we are the property of Jesus Christ. We became His when we were saved. At that time, He becomes our Lord, the master of our life. The Apostle Paul introduced himself as, Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1). Literally, Paul said that he was a slave of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul knew and declared his position as a servant of Christ. What is required of the servants of the Lord Jesus? In Luke 19:11-27, we find a parable which gives us insights into what is expected or required of the servants of the Lord. 1. Submissiveness [he called] (vs.13, compare with Romans 12:1-2) 2. Obedience [occupy, He commanded them to trade (hapax legomenon)], (vs.13) 3. Faithfulness [till I come] (vs.13, compare with 1 Corinthians 4:2) 4. Accountability [that he might know] (vs.13, compare with Romans 14:12) 5. Trust/fear of the Lord [thou knewest] (vs.22, compare with Proverbs 3:5) 6. Expectation of Justice [take from him] (vs.24, compare with 1 Corinthians 3:11-15) As genuine Believers in Christ, we should be able to say, as did the Apostle Paul, that we are servant-slaves of Jesus Christ; or that Jesus Christ is the Lord of our life. Are you a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ? MonthlyMemoryVerse praise the name of the LORD From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD S name is to be praised. from the P U L P I T Message by Dr. Caswell A. Reeves Fighting to Keep a Church Alive Acts 20:25-32 Church members are in a fight to keep their local churches alive. Paul reveals this fight for the church of Ephesus. Note Paul s words of exhortation and be discerning of: I. The Apostle s Commitment (vs. 25-27) A. He preached among them (vs. 25) B. He preached with a clear conscience (vs. 26) C. He preached the whole counsel (vs. 27) II. The Apostle s Charge (vs. 28-31) A. Take heed to feed (vs. 28) B. Watch for wolves (vs. 29) C. Watch for heretics (vs. 30) D. Remember the Apostle s warnings (vs. 31) III. The Apostle s Committal (deposit) (vs. 32) A. Deposited with God (vs. 32) B. Deposited with the Word of God (vs. 32) 1. That is gracious - favorable to you 2. That is able to build you up 3. That is able to give you an inheritance Paul s words are just as applicable today as when he spoke them. Are you heeding his words? 6 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage forever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. Psalm 119:111 5
