Dear Friends, Christ the King Youth Ministry is proud to have 39 peer leaders (and 10 adult leaders) this year for our confirmation program. The peer leaders are young people who were confirmed last year, and have volunteered this year to continue to work with their juniors on their journey to be confirmed. These leaders attended a leadership training retreat this past August where they learned how to be effective speakers, small group leaders, and faith role models to over eighty-four students who are preparing to receive their sacrament this year. Beginning this January, our leadership has been meeting on a weekly basis (in addition to their required attendance to our bi-weekly confirmation class which has been meeting since September) to prepare for our annual confirmation retreat, which will happen on March 2-4 of this year. They've been tirelessly working on witness talks, creating decorations, preparing skits, practicing music so that our current confirmation students can experience a retreat of a lifetime. Some parishioners may have even seen the leadership team painting banners outside of the parish hall. We're very blessed to have so many students return to us after being confirmed last year - but, with that, comes a few problems. In the past, youth ministry has absorbed the $200/person cost of the retreat for our leadership team. We did this because of the countless hours that they CHOSE to spend with us as leaders. However, that was when we had 10-12 leaders a year. With so many leaders this year, it's difficult for us to pay for them - so we turn to our parish to assist. I would like to personally request parishioners who are blessed - to help us defray the cost of 39 peer leaders (approx. $8,000.00) who will attend and assist the retreat for the confirmation candidates. Fr. Paulson has allowed us to take a collection this weekend, Feb. 24/25. Rick Lejano, CTK Youth Minister Update on Hurricane assistance: I received the following update on the assistance we have provided for Puerto Rico. Thanks to the generosity of Christ the King parish community, the Diocese of Arecibo has been able to provide help in different ways. Around $1,500 has been used to provide meals for families Vouchers for home repairs for about 33 families have been provided Vouchers for furniture for 63 families Monetary assistance for 75 families Parishes continue to distribute donations as they become available Parishes have organized health fairs so that residents can receive medical assistance Clothes, water, meals, personal hygiene products, and generators have been distributed Around 40% of the communities in the Diocese of Arecibo remain without electricity and there are sectors without access to drinking water. Bishop s Appeal Update: Before Bishop Barber left CTK last week after celebrating two masses, he mentioned to us priests that he was deeply touched with our hospitality. The people are so friendly, he said. During his sermon, he underscored the fact that we are one of the most generous parishes in the diocese. Our Bishop s appeal goal is approximately $87,000.00 for this year. I would like to thank you for your participation in the diocesan ministry. We have a basket in the vestibule to collect the appeal envelopes. You can also drop your donations at the office anytime during the week or mail it in. Thank you. Fr. Paulson Second Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 First Reading: Genesis 22: 1-2, 9,10-13,15-18 Events in today s reading took place approximately 1800 years before Christ. In that pagan culture, child sacrifice was common. That s why Abraham believed God wanted him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Later generations constantly looked back to this event as an example of Abraham s great faith. Second Reading: Romans 8:31-34 Today s reading is part of a hymn that celebrates God s love and which concludes the eighth chapter of Paul s letter to the Romans. In our first reading, we heard how God spared Abraham s only son; in this passage we will hear how, out of love for us, God did not spare his only son. PARISH STAFF CONTACTS Fr. Pray for Our Sick May you be wrapped up in God s love, Found deep in His everlasting wings, carried and kept, safe and cherished. May the healing power of Christ breathe across your being now. Ryan Joseph, Maura Atherton Book of Intentions: Many people request that their sick or deceased loved ones be mentioned in the prayers at our Masses. In order that everyone may feel encouraged to have their loved ones prayed for we will have a special book in the vestibule of our church. Anyone may write the name of someone who is sick or deceased (or an anniversary of death). This Book of Intentions will then be brought forward with the gifts of bread and wine. The book will be placed on the altar. The only names mentioned at Mass will be the recently deceased and upcoming funerals. Prayerful people, join the 40 days for life world wide prayer vigil! Stem the tide of abortion in our community with one hour of your time at the Walnut Creek Planned Parenthood from February 14 to March 24. For vigil hours and more: 40daysforlife.com/walnutcreek.
