14th Annual Service of Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Friday, January 15, 1999-8:00 p.m. this year, the guest speaker for our annual service of tribute to Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. will be Glenn Cunningham, United States Marshal, District of New Jersey. Mr. Cunningham, who was born and raised in Jersey City, joined the Jersey City Police Department in 1966 upon his discharge from military service. While in the police department, he rose to the rank of Captain, and at the same time attended Jersey City State College from which he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree, graduating with honors in 1974. Upon his retirement from the Jersey City Police Department in 1991, Glenn was appointed Director, Hudson County Department of Public Safety. Glenn also served our community in various elective offices. He was elected twice to the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He was also elected twice to the City Council of Jersey City, and served as the Council President. In 1996, upon the recommendation of United States Senator Frank Lautenberg, President Bill Clinton nominated Glenn for the position of United States Marshal for the District of New Jersey. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and then by the full Senate on July 25, 1996. He was sworn in on October 8, 1996 - the first African-American Presidential appointee to hold that position in the State of New Jersey. Temple Beth-EI is privileged to have Glenn Cunningham address our congregation. We encourage our members, as well as their friends in the community, to join us as we welcome him to our Temple.

r WE ARE OFF TO ISRAEL! Nineteen members of the Temple and their friends will visit Israel with Rabbi Brickman in March. It is not. too late to join them. If you are interested, call the Rabbi immediately. There will be a meeting for all of those who will be travelling to Israel in the Temple Library on Monday, January 25, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first of our two orientation meetings before the trip. The second meeting will be held in late February. SHABBAT FAMILY SERVICE Our next Shabbat Family Service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 1999. Religious School parents should mark their calendars now and watch the mail for more details. WELCOME! We welcome new members Samuel Katz and Larisa Svedlova to our congregational family. "SHALOM ALEICHEM" Adapted from: "UAHC Outreach Connections" By Rabbi Judith Bluestein A story in the Talmud states that two angels accompany every Jew home from synagogue on Erev Shabbat. If they fmd the house prepared for Shabbat, the good angel says, "May it be this way for the next Shabbat," and the bad angel, against his will, is forced to reply, "Amen"("Let it be so''). However, if the household is not ready to celebrate Shabbat, the bad angel says, "May it be this way for the next Shabbat," and against his will, the good angel is forced to reply, "Amen." This legend inspired the song "Shalom Aleichem," a song traditionally sung after returning home from synagogue, before the Shabbat meal..lshalom Aleichem" speaks of the peace of Shabbat and the peace, which these angels bring with them. By extension, our singing "Shalom Aleichem" helps usher in the peace of Shabbat. Join us every week at Temple Beth-EI and help us usher in the peace of Shabbat, thereby bringing peace to our congregation and peace to our homes. I pray that we all may find such peace each and every Shabbat.
