The festival is rooted in the Catholic Christian Tradition, but it is open to all. The aim is to help Christians to know more about the Bible, and to encounter God s Word in new and dynamic ways. Through talks, workshops, exhibitions and worship, Festival goers will see the Holy Scriptures in a whole new light. Tickets for the Salford Festival on Saturday 6 October will be on sale later this year. Further information is available on the Diocesan website www.rcdhn.orguk The Bishop and Diocesan Board of Trustees received the report of the main findings of the communications research project in March, and asked that a working group would take the report s recommendations and construct a framework of Strategic Principles for adoption by the Diocese. The working group has met several times, and is now writing a series of main policies including Information Technology, Management Information Systems and Training. These will be presented to the Bishop and Board of Trustees at their autumn meeting. These policies will inform the way forward for a more integrated approach to communications across the Diocese. Further updates will be provided in due course, but if you have any questions please contact the Department for Communications by email at: webmaster@rcdhn.org.uk Partnership News

Partnerships One Year On - At Pentecost we asked all Partnerships to reflect on their first year to celebrate everything that has been achieved, to identify the challenges that lie ahead and highlight any additional support needs. Many thanks to all those involved in completing the short review which will provide a coherent picture of progress and help us to focus our efforts on the support that partnerships will find most useful moving ahead. It is really encouraging to see the huge amount of good things already happening in our partnerships. Partnership Matters The August / September edition of the bimonthly news update is now available on the front page of the diocesan website (www.rcdhn.org.uk). It includes an introduction from our new Chief Operating Officer, Fiona Standfield and a range of activities and ideas shared from across the Diocese. Summer BBQ Monday 27 August: We are holding a summer BBQ for both parishes at St. Aidan s hall and grounds on bank holiday Monday afternoon. Tickets are on sale from the back of both churches. Cost 5 for adults, children go free. Bring your own drinks. Please put the date in your diary. We will need to collect numbers attending for catering purposes. A vegetarian option will be available. COME TO THE WELL. You are invited to attend a short course which will take place at ST. LAWRENCE, BYKER from Thursday 20th September. 7pm (and every Thursday afterwards for 6 weeks.) This is an Ecumenical Course devised by Sr. Sheila McNamara

St. Aidan s Coach Lane, Benton, NE12 8AD www.staidansbenton.yolasite.com Sr. Dorothy celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) of Religious Profession at 10am mass on Thursday 2nd August, followed by a Reception in the hall afterwards. It was a wonderful celebration. Thanks to all who shared this day, especially those who helped to organise it and to all who contributed to a gift for Sister. Church Flowers: It is becoming increasingly expensive to buy enough flowers to keep our church displays looking at their best. We would appreciate any donations towards the cost of flowers (there is a box at the back of church for donations). We are aware that there have been many special collections over the past few weeks, so we appreciate your ongoing generosity. Thank you for your support. Visits to the sick and housebound: Fr. Mariadass would like to update our list of visits to the sick and housebound. If you currently visit a parishioner, please will you fill in the list at the back of church, with their name and address. Please indicate whether they would like a visit from Fr. Mariadass. If you know of anyone who would like a home visit or communion please add their name and contact details to the list. Partnership Matters The latest edition is on St Aidan s website and a printed copy is on the notice board. See Partnership Section for more details. Please Pray for our Sick and Housebound Parishioners:

Prayers etc. The Transfiguration 0f the Lord. The Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor came to strengthen the faith of the disciples, for trying times lay ahead The Son of Man would be put to death and all that the human eye could see was weakness, humiliation and suffering. Beyond the shame of the cross, however, is the light and glory of Easter, and it is this that the Transfiguration reveals. It shows the disci-ples, and us, Christ s Divinity He who is Light from Light- and anticipates the glory of Heaven. St Teresa Benedicta Edith Stein was born in Breslau, the eleventh child and youngest daughter of Jewish parents. Her university education was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, she served as a nurse with the Red Cross. For a number of years she had doubted the existence of God but was led back to her faith largely through the influence of St Teresa of Avila, whose writings she devoured. Baptised in 1922 she expressed a desire to enter the Carmelites, but was dissuaded by her spiritual directors. She embarked on a teaching career which lasted some twelve years until 1933, when she lost her job because of the measures being taken against the Jewish population. However, Edith was now able to enter the Carmelite monastery at Cologne, taking the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Because her presence threatened the safety of the Community, she was transferred to the Netherlands. In 1942 the Dutch bishops issued a pastoral letter condemning the persecution of the Jews and Edith was among a number of Jews who were seized in a Nazi reprisal. She was a tremendous support to her fellow-prisoners on the long journey to Auschwitz where she was immediately executed in the gas chambers. She was canonised in October 1998 and named as one of the patron saints of Europe.
