We, the parish family of St. Ephrem, baptized into the life of Jesus Christ and nourished by the Word and the Eucharist, strive to be a welcoming and responsive Roman Catholic faith community. Together we are committed to put our faith into action by: Responding to the spiritual and physical needs of the community through service and charity. Reaching out to those who are searching for a faith community, including the young and those seeking to re-kindle their relationship with God. Reaching out to all without distinction. Passing on our faith and traditions through teaching by word and example. Connecting to where people are on their faith journey. Actively participating in the worship, sacrament and devotional life of the church.

First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 Make straight the paths of the Lord. As we begin this new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent, we are presented with a reading from Mark s gospel. Jesus speaks about the coming end time, encouraging Peter, James, John and Andrew (and us) to be watchful, to be prepared, and to recognize the signs of the times. The passage concludes this ominous chapter with the key word watch that occurs in each but one verse. Watch is an appropriate word with which to begin our Advent season. WE are to be prepared for the Lord s coming, not knowing precisely when that, will be. We, like the gatekeeper, keep watch in the evening, at midnight, at dawn and in the morning. Like the early disciples, we know not when he comes, but that he is coming. Mark was written at a time when the early Christians expected Jesus imminent return. Today, we can discern the signs of our own times and recognize the Lord s coming, perhaps not in an apocalyptic sense, but in the Christmas incarnation. That is, Jesus, the Word of God, comes to us in flesh and blood. Jesus is the incarnation of God, and he comes to us sacramentally in the Eucharist. Each generation seems to say the end is near. While we are looking to the sky for signs of the end time, the Lord is in our midst in weakness and vulnerability. Do we see Jesus present in that disguise? We should see that God is in our midst. The key word for this Sunday is watch. But we may also say, recognize. I am happy to share with you that eleven Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, N.Y. will be moving into our convent this month and joining the three Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters. I am sure that you join me in welcoming the sisters to our parish family. Next Saturday evening immediately following the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass, we will have our 3 rd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. I hope you can join us, as our Adult and Children s Choirs lead us in song so that the Light of Christ will shine in Dyker Heights from St. Ephrem for all to see. In today s bulletin you can also find our Financial Report for the 2016-2017 fiscal year ending on August 31, 2017, prepared by an independent auditing firm, Baglivi and Cook, Certified Public Accountants. Mark 1:18 Congratulations to our parishioner & alumni Anthony Mastroianni First Honors Ninth Grade CATHEDRAL PREP MEN FOR GREATNESS 6 PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS ] Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to respond to your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life. We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest, Amen.
