This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. You might call it the final statement of common sense, since the Book of Proverbs was supposedly written by King Solomon who was known for his wisdom. The wording of it might ruffle the feathers of the modern liberated woman since it deals with the qualities of a worthy wife and makes her seem somewhat complacent in her role. However, there are missing parts which change what we see. The first problem is that the translation, a worthy wife, is not an exact translation. The original Hebrew wording is closer to a woman of power or a woman of wealth, and wife is not mentioned. Since they mention her husband, it is assumed that it is about being a wife. Though it does say that any man fortunate enough to have such a woman as his wife is truly blessed, the full passage is about the woman in her own right. The second problem is that we are missing some lines as you can see from the indicated passages (Proverbs 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31). Taking a look at the missing passages gives us quite a different picture. Line 16 states She picks out a field to purchase; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. From this we know that she was able to make a living on her own and that she is a business woman who owns property. Apparently women of that time had far more freedom than we think. Line 24 says that She makes garments and sells them and stocks the merchants with belts. This is being done while Her husband is prominent at the city gates as he sits with the elders of the land (line 23). That was probably the equivalent of today s practice of sitting around with his buddies watching ball games on the weekend at the local pub. Reading the entirety of Psalm 31, we find out that things were not as different then as we might think. As a matter of fact, the parallels are striking. We find that it begins with an admonition to men not to drink too much because it causes people to forget what the law decrees and to violate the rights of those in need. Once again, good advice for a modern society with too many DUIs and spousal abuse. Having warned men against strong drink and encouraging them to take care of the needy and the poor in the first ten lines, the next 21 lines are concerned with how valuable good women are to the society and especially their families. Basically, it states that women are the backbone of the nation and truly keep it running. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? This final passage of Proverbs ends with the two lines we see in today s reading, warning women that charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting. In today s society, with its emphasis on beauty and prestige, that advice could not be more relevant. ~DN
