A Message from Fr. Dan DEVINE MERCY SUNDAY On the Second Sunday of Easter of the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the canonizaon of St. Fausna Kowalska, Pope John Paul II proclaimed to the world that from now on throughout the Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope John Paul had acvely promoted the message of St. Fausna. In his 1980 encyclical on God s mercy, Rich in Mercy, he developed a scriptural and doctrinal basis for our faith in the mercy of God. By linking the revealed truth about God s mercy to one of the most solemn Sundays aer Easter itself, he illumined the fact that the liturgy already proclaimed the divine mercy. The truth has been embedded for two millennia in the worship of the Church. Once again we see an illustraon of the ancient saying, The law of faith is the law of prayer. On the Second Sunday of Easter, the responsorial psalm and Gospel for Cycles A, B and C center on the theme of mercy. In Psalm 118 we sing three mes, His mercy endures forever. The Gospel, from John 20:1931, begins with the risen Christ appearing to the apostles on Easter night. Jesus calms his disciples by saying and giving them Peace. He shows them the scars of his Passion, his wounded hands and side. His glorified body retains the evidence of his saving work through his suffering, death and resurrecon. He fills them with joy and again says to themand produces in them Peace. Then he breathes on them and explains what the divine breathing means with the words, Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. He gives the apostles the power of God s mercy for the sinner, the gi of forgiving sins from God s treasury of mercy. The other texts speak of healing and give the assurance there is nothing to fear. You might have seen the image of Jesus standing with one hand outstretched in blessing, the other clutching the side wounded by the spear, from which proceed beams of falling light, red and white in color. An explanaon of these colors was given to Sister Fausna by Jesus himself saying, "The two rays represent blood and water." [7] This has been aributed to the "blood and water" referenced in the Gospel of John, (John 19:34) and which is also menoned in the op- onal of the Chaplet. The words Jesus I Trust in Thee He gave her a chaplet to be recited and said that it was appropriate to pray the chaplet at three o'clock each aernoon (the Hour of Great Mercy). God Bless, Fr. Dan BORN TO ETERNAL LIFE Ronald J. Werowinski Eternal rest grant onto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Do you have leadership skills that would benefit out Parish Council? ON THE PASTORAL COUNCIL? This weekend, the parish community will be seeking nominaons for the Pastoral Council. Here are some quesons and informaon nominees need to consider! Do you have a deep love for the parish? Are you being called to serve the parish in this way? As a bapzed Catholic, we are all called to serve Christ and the Church. Each of us is responsible to listen and respond to that call. So how do you recognize if you are being called to be part of the Pastoral Council? Somemes you hear the call very plainly in prayer. At other mes, you may hear the call voiced by others. ( I think you would do well on our Pastoral Council. ) Or maybe you can see yourself more acve in the parish, and this would be a natural extension of your service to the parish. Perhaps you see the need, and see yourself as capable of being of service at this me. ( If not me, who? If not now, when? ) The Pastoral Council needs to reflect diversity. Single & married adults, the elderly, young adults, school & faith formaon parents, minories, charter & new parish members, etc., all need representaon on the council. Whose concerns and needs could you represent? Prayerfully consider how you would like to respond to God s call. Do you have any of these characteriscsability to collaborate, deep love for the parish & its mission, a willingness to grow in holiness, the desire to serve, a broad vision, willingness to learn, and a sense of stewardship? The confidence needed to respond to this call is given as a gi from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit provides the courage we need, if we only call upon that Spirit. Trust the Spirit! A 23, 2017.. Without air and the ability to breathe, we would die. It is no wonder then that Jesus breathed on the disciples and gave them the Holy Spirit. As our physical breath is essenal to physically live, the Holy Spirit is essenal to personally and socially live. Jesus shows his friends that God is within them, sustaining them with his gis and providing them with the fullness of life and love. We take God's role in our lives for granted and we give ourselves more credit than we ought. Much of what we treasure and accomplish every day is due to God's inner presence moving and acng within us calling us to new life.
