On May 12, 2016, I was elected for the position of Post Commander. What a truly great honor! May 12 th holds a special place in my heart; it is the day in 1981 that I arrived as a Seaman Recruit in Orlando, Florida for my first day in the Navy. It couldn t be any more special than being elected Post Commander exactly 35 years to the day. Following Commander Lowman is a daunting task that I hope I accomplish well. I believe I will, when you are surrounded by awesomely knowledgeable people, that tends to happen! His leadership has brought our post to the level it is today. I can truly say I have learned a lot over the past year from him and from everyone in our post, officer or not, and I m sure I will continue to grow my Legion knowledge as I go along. Thank you to everyone involved in the post installation held on June 5 th. It was a wonderful event I m sure everyone in attendance can attest to. I believe everyone had a great time, I know I did! Congratulations to the newly elected Legion Riders, Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion officers. I wish you the best! Have you noticed the fresh paint in the front of the post or the new refinishing of the hall floor? They look great! They are two of the many improvement projects for the upcoming year. Our Executive Board members are working tirelessly toward these goals. I can t wait to work with all of you to see what we accomplish. There is so much more I would like to express but so little space to do it. Our volunteerism is what makes our post great. I m happy to have found the right post in Maryland; it s where I want to be! The Turner Times Page 2 First Vice Commander MEMBERSHIP I'm back,! In my last newsletter I didn't know if I would be back, but I'm here. I would like to thank all the members who did pay 2016 dues. On or about July 1st the National Organization will be sending out about 2.2 million 2017 dues notices. That is when we kick-off our 2017 year for membership and I hope that everyone pays early and becomes an EARLY BIRD. Remember you can pay on line at www.mdlegion.org or www.legion.org. I am planning on starting to give the membership numbers, but not until the next newsletter. Right now we will end up at about 737 missing our goal by 34. Those who are interested in the Pail-UP-For-life it is all handled by the National Organization. They just made some major changes effective June 1st. The member can obtain a rate quote at www.legion.org/ pufl. So I will be giving you more information in next newsletter I know this is not a subject people like to talk about, but did you know that you can pre-register for burial in any Maryland veterans cemetery? You don't have to wait and leave it up to your family to take care of it. To pre-register call Crownsville Veterans cemetery at 410-987-6320 For those of you who are interested the EARLY BIRD PARTY this year it will be held on November 13th at 2 P.M. So I hope everyone will have a nice and safe start of the summer vacation. See you in two months. I would like to thank all the Auxiliary members that helped make our Installation Ceremony a success. Especially our Past President Ramona Conroy for all her hard work to assure that everything went smoothly. Looking forward to a year of sharing and working with the Legionaries, SALs and Legion Riders... we will make a great team! I would like to thank all the members of the Auxiliary for electing me as their Unit President. I am honored to be able to work with all of you. It is my hope that we are as successful this year as we have been in the past. Wacky Wednesday Bar Bingo - 1 st & 3 rd Wed of the month starts @ last game starts 9:30 with bingo caller 25c a card 50c specials - $1 a card for Jackpot SAL opening kitchen wings-chicken tenders-fries Flea Market/Yard Sale July 30 th rain/ shine 8-1pm $15 a table hot dogs/soda/water $2.50 Las Vegas Night in Severn Oct 29th 7-11pm a dance featuring Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Big Booper, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Connie Francis & George Jones. Tickets will include beer, wine and munchies. Mixed drinks will be available at happy hour prices. You can also bring your own food for your table. The Turner Times Page 4 Chaplain s Corner We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -Declaration of Independence As the summer season is in full swing and the 4 th of July is right around the corner it is good for us to be mindful of the cost of freedom. From time to time we may feel the sting of grief as we remember our fallen comrades. While there is nothing wrong with that I am also reminded of the quote from George S. Patton. It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived. So let us fully enjoy those rights and freedoms this summer. At the same time, let us give thanks to God for giving us this good land as our heritage along with its many freedoms; And let us give thanks for the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend them.
