CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH Concordia is the Church where the love of Christ is shared through our hearts, our hands, and our voices. THE TRANSFIGURATION of OUR LORD March 3, 2019 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) Peter, James and John trudged up that mountain with Jesus and witnessed His Transfiguration. His clothes shone intensely white. They saw Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus. And they heard the mighty voice of God the Father say, This is my beloved Son, my chosen one; listen to Him! (Luke 9:35b) Imagine that. They actually saw the Glory of the Lord! We too can see Jesus. We see Him in the pages of the Holy Scriptures, and in messages preached from the Christian pulpit. And we most certainly can see Our Savior in the blessed sacraments. It is not just a physical act on our part each time we partake of His body and blood, but a response to His invitation to share in His life, His sacrifice, and His resurrection. We also are transformed through our Baptism and our belief from condemned to redeemed. Halleluiah! PRELUDE ANNOUNCEMENTS (p.16-18) CALL TO WORSHIP and PASSING OF THE PEACE RINGING OF THE BELLS (Please stand and face the Cross) 1

+ DIVINE SERVICE SETTING TWO + (Hymnal, p. 167) 2 OPENING VERSICLES (Psalm 99) Pastor: The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! People: The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Pastor: Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! People: The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Pastor: Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he! People: Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the LORD, and he answered them. Pastor: In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them. People: O LORD our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings. ALL: Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy! OPENING HYMN #414 Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination) 3 Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we struggle with money and fail to be good stewards of time, talent, and treasure. We confess that there is evil in our hearts and minds, and that we have been disobedient, doing what we should not, and not doing what we should. Nothing is hidden from Your sight. We are naked and exposed, our sins are before you, even our secret sins in the light of Your presence. We justly deserve Your real and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may confidently draw near to Your throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. (please remain standing) HYMN OF PRAISE This is the Feast

5 PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. ALL : O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 34:1 12 (The death of Moses) Reader: The Old Testament reading is from Deuteronomy, chapter thirty-four. (After the reading ) Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING Hebrews 3:1 6 (Jesus, the Son, is worthy of more glory than Moses.) Reader: The Epistle reading is from Hebrews, chapter three. (After the reading )

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! 6 (Please stand for the Alleluia Verse and the reading of the Gospel Lesson) ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 9:28 36 GOSPEL PROCESSION Hymn #507 Verse 2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. (The transfiguration of Jesus) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter. (The Gospel is read.) Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

GOSPEL PROCESSION HYMN #507 VERSE 3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, in love, and purity. 7 NICENE CREED All: We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, we acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen. (Please be seated)

We invite the children forward as we sing: LSB 740, v. 1 & 2I I am Jesus little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am; For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need and well provides me, Loves me ev ry day the same, Even calls me by my name. 8 Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay. When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, Into pleasant pastures leads me; When I thirst, He bids me go Where the quiet waters flow. CHILDREN S TALK SERMON HYMN #413 O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair SERMON The Transfiguration of Our Lord TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS [Please take a moment and sign the attendance book at the end of the pew] (Please stand for the Prayers) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray together in Christ Jesus for all people according to their needs. Transforming Love, living on our own terms, our lives have become unmanageable. Grant that by Your Word and Spirit we continually be transformed, trusting in Jesus who was transfigured in the sight of Peter, James, and John. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Transforming Love, the people, systems, and institutions of this world are crying out under the weight of feeling unloved. Jesus has come that all people come to know and believe how much You love all of us from the least to the greatest. Grant that our elected and appointed officials be persuaded by Your love to govern wisely that all people on earth dwell in peace. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Transforming Love, Your people are torn to pieces by many dangers, toils, and snares. Our attentions are divided and our words and actions are motivated by the cares, griefs, and pains of our lives. We cause one another much pain and so get in the way of Your love for all people in Christ Jesus flowing through us to all people in our communities and societies. Grant that we turn to You, living the promises of our Baptism, embracing our identity as vessels of Your mercy in a way that overflows to the people around us. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Transforming Love, there are many who are weak and sick among us and in our circles of family and friends. Remember for good all people who are suffering in body, mind, or spirit, [especially...]. Grant them both inward and outward healing according to Your will, helping them to trust Your goodness in all things. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Transforming Love, the embodiment of Your love comes among us in the Meal of Jesus true body and blood. Grant us hearts that entrust our wills and our lives to Your gracious care as we receive this life-giving food. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Transforming Love, through the cares of our everyday lives, we look forward to the day when You will call us and all people 9

to rise according to Your gracious promise. Grant that we faithfully journey from this day to that day when we will join Your saints of every time and place at the marriage supper of the Lamb in His reign that endures forever. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. People: Amen. + SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. 10 Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PROPER PREFACE Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who with Your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God, we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty

coequal. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 11 SANCTUS THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, ( ) given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, ( ) shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 THE LORD S PRAYER Pastor: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: Amen. AGNUS DEI 12
