This dynamism of resurrection life is that it is not content with a me and Jesus relationship. It is essentially directed toward others, drawing in even those who are radically unlike us. The active aspect of love (as opposed to feelings, sentiment, or emotionalism) is underscored by the disciples close association with the command of Jesus. The selfless aspect of this obedient love is also stated clearly: to lay down one s life for one s friends. Ultimately, the life of the resurrection is reached only through dying to self. This was Jesus path. So is it ours as his disciples. We are able to love in this way because Jesus life, death, and resurrection is a model already given and because we have been chosen for such a loving, self-giving life. From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, Faith Formation First Communion: Fifty-three of our Faith Formation children made First Communion last Saturday May 6, 2012. There were 13 Special Needs children among them. It was another beautiful ceremony in the history of our parish life. How we grown-ups long for their innocence, faith, sense of wonder, simplicity, gratitude, and their excitement! Wish we could recapture a bit of their state of mind and heart in our practice of faith. The Communion--- the Body of Christ---they received for the first time makes them princes and princesses of South San Francisco because when they have Christ with them they are most privileged. I congratulate the first communicants and their families. May this sacrament be a source of renewal of life for them and for our parish. May Crowning: Last Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we had the Crowning of Mary to mark the month of May, traditionally dedicated to our Blessed Mother. The children sang beautifully and danced and crowned the statue of Mary in a symbolic expression of love and devotion to her. It was a pure and moving ceremony. As you are aware, our devotion to Mary is scripturally based. She is a model for those who hear God s word and observe it. She tells us to do whatever her son wants us to do. She inspires us to say yes to God s will. As she hastened to help her cousin Elizabeth in need, we too can help those in need in our families and communities. Mary was also at the foot of the cross, joining her own suffering with that of her son. If Jesus was so close to his mother, we can also be close to her. Her intercession is a powerful and affectionate one. Parish Survey: Last week, our parish school community received the survey via e-mail. At all the weekend Masses, we requested the parishioners to respond to two simple survey questions: One, I am in support of the parish moving forward with paving the property: Yes or No. Two, I am willing to financially support this major undertaking: Yes or No. If no, please let us know why. We are in the process of tabulating the responses and soon will share the results with you. I thank you for being so kind as to participate in this important survey. Archbishop of Malta--Most Reverend Paul Cremona: His visit to the Bay Area was a source of celebration of the Maltese community among us. On Friday May 4, 2012, at the invitation of Jane and Charles Healey, I attended the dinner in honor of the visiting prelate at the Maltese-American Social Club, South San Francisco. I had invited the Archbishop to visit our parish and celebrate Mass. Even though his schedule was tight, he accepted our invitation. Last Monday, he celebrated the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Our whole school was present and sang beautifully. Our parishioners were joined by the Maltese community. The Archbishop s faith, humility, and simplicity were evident. The school children were inspired. Later in the day, Savannah Ponce of 4 th Grade said to me: Father Charles, I really enjoyed the Mass this morning. The Mass was followed by a simple but elegant hospitality prepared by Joe & Carmella Da San Martino and their dedicated helpers. Also present was the Consul General of Malta. I want to thank the Principal and the parish volunteers for making this event classy and memorable. Church Canopy Repair: The Church canopy (overhang) on one side of the church front had rotted and was leaking with a potential danger for accidents. Now it has received a new roof for that portion. What we raise for the maintenance of buildings and grounds through our second collection is wisely spent on the ongoing upkeep, cleanliness, and repairs of our buildings and grounds. Remember over three years ago, we got the exterior of the Church painted. How can we address the big issue of the parish grounds which have never been paved since the beginning of the parish? We are looking for blue s clues in our survey. Spanish Mass and Aztec Dances: Last Sunday, the first Sunday of the month, we had our regular Spanish Mass at 6:00 p.m. There were nearly two hundred people who attended it. There was lively music by a Charismatic group and great preaching by Father Moises Agudo. As I have said, this is a testimony to the presence of Spanish speaking Catholics among us, a sign of diversity. But we experience unity in Jesus Christ who calls us all to build up his body---to make the world a better place for everyone. If you d like to come to this Mass, mark your calendars: First Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The Mass was followed by hospitality and amazing Aztec dances in the Parish Center. Mother s Day: An Irish proverb says: A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest. Here s wishing all mothers a happy and blessed Mother s Day! Thank you for making life possible! Thank you for being God s most alluring and irresistible channels of tenderness and gentleness and sweetness. God bless you, Mothers, and always keep you! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
A Mother's Day Prayer There is no love, like a mother s love, No stronger bond on earth like the precious bond that comes from God, to a mother, when she gives birth. A mother s love is forever strong, never changing for all time when her children need her most, a mother s love will shine. God bless these special mothers, God bless them everyone for all the tears and heartache, for the special work they ve done. When her days on earth are over, a mother s love lives on through many generations, with God s blessings on each one. Be thankful for our mothers, For they love with a higher love From the power God has given, And the strength from up above.
