How do you feel when faced with a change perhaps a surprise? Of course, there are pleasant changes; then there are unpleasant changes. April 9 last year a large truck parked at the house we had lived in for the previous nine years, in Mitla, Oaxaca, Mexico. Claudia and I had been packing boxes for a month, following the extensive rules for trans-border moves. And we had had a giant garage sale. The boxes and some favorite furniture were loaded onto the truck by the crew of three, and shortly the big change was underway. A few days later we, our boxes and furniture were in Dallas, TX. The unpacking began, and so did other changes such as beginning Medicare, different car, different driving customs, etc. Many changes: some good, some hard! Apartment instead of house nice place to live, friendly neighbors (good); need to downsize (hard); a long way away from our exceedingly kind and generous Mexico friends (hard); back in touch with First Presbyterian (good!); no longer fulltime workers (both hard and good); within driving distance of our children and grandchildren (good); now we have a dishwasher (good!) the list goes on and on! And we can imagine more changes ahead. For example, there are the difficulties associated with aging: the new normals as we ve learned to say. We also notice good changes here at First Presbyterian; the Lord may bring changes to our church in the future. So where do we turn when change is distressful? Where does help come from? Are we on our own? NO! We are not alone. Jesus has experienced similar stress. We turn to Scripture to remind ourselves of His care and love for us. Big changes can make us weary. Jesus said in Matthew s gospel that He invites us to come in our weariness to Him, and He will give us rest. His Spirit refreshes us as we bring our heavy loads to Jesus. Not knowing what changes lie ahead makes us fearful. Speaking to His disciples in John s gospel He let them know that they would experience trouble in the world are we surprised that we do also! But He added that He has overcome the world, and that He told them what to expect so that they could have peace. Claudia and I are so thankful for the rest and peace that Jesus gives! We look forward to that rest and peace in the midst of the changes that lie ahead. Paul

The Epistle 2 PW News Thanks for Your Support! Special thanks to one and all who supported our annual Spaghetti Supper/Christmas Auction and extended silent auction. Through your generosity, we raised $1,602 in all! If you would like information about how and where these funds are used, please refer to the PW report in the upcoming church reports for 2016. Thanks again! Women s Bible Study The Agape Women's Bible Circle will hold its February meeting at the church on Wednesday the 8th at 1:00 pm. Lesson 6 from the PW Horizon's study "Who Is Jesus?" deals with the view of this unknown author of Jesus as seen in the book of Hebrews. Read all of this book, or Hebrews 1-6 and 12-13, or focus on Hebrews 12:1-2. All are welcome! Sarah Circle will meet at Nancy Bergman s home, 1063 Fairmeadows Circle, Duncanville on February 14, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Prayers Needed for Mission of the Good Shepherd PW received a letter recently requesting prayers for children at the Mission of the Good Shepherd in Mango Creek, Independence Village, Belize, in Central America. The request came from the wife of the pastor at this mission. In addition to prayers for all the children at the mission, the following children are in need of special prayers right now: Letia, Whitney, Kiyla, Vanessa and Lynn. Please add these children to your prayer list as well as to remember the Rev. Dr. Stephen Post and his wife, Shermaine Post, as they serve this mission. Enclosed with the request was a greeting from the children, hand colored by one of them, which we have posted on the PW bulletin board across from the office. More information about this mission may be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abj34o03rxm Or at the following two small websites: http://goodshepherdchildren.weebly.com http://goodshepherdbelize.wordpress.com Thank you.
