NINTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY March 10, 2019 Theme of the Day: Mary, the Sister of Lazarus and Martha, loves to give. She gives it all. But the disciples? Their chief delight is to get. Who will we follow Mary (give) or the disciples (get)? PRESERVICE 10:45a Part of the Plan ESM Joyful Sounds WELCOME INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: Amen. P: Let us follow Christ to the places of his passion! C: To see the depths of his love! P: To behold the gift of his forgiveness! C: To gaze upon the heights of his grace! P: To marvel at the magnitude of his mercy! C: Today we follow Christ to Bethany. P: And into the house of Simon the leper. C: Mary prepares Christ for his burial by anointing him with perfume. P: Let us follow Christ to the places of his passion! All: To marvel at the magnitude of his mercy! HYMN My Place is With You (stanzas 1 4) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Magnificent and merciful Father, because I travel to dark and dangerous places, hear me as I confess my sins. C: My feet take me to places of compromise and sinful ambition. P: My heart lingers in places of lust and lies. C: My words take me to places of anger, rage and hatred. 1

P: My ears delight in going to places of gossip, deceit and ridicule. C: My mind takes me to places of selfishness and pride. P: My eyes lead me to places of envy and greed. All: Lord, have mercy! Christ, have mercy! Lord, have mercy! Please silently reflect on the fact that though our is great, Christ s love is greater. P: Hear the good news! Jesus went to places of rejection, suffering, torment and death for you. Jesus was determined to go to Gethsemane, Gabbatha and Golgotha for you. Jesus went to hell and back for you. That s why Jesus forgives you completely and loves you eternally. Let us follow Christ to the places of his passion. All: To marvel at the magnitude of his mercy! HYMN My Place is With You (stanza 5) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank you for Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, for through her generosity we catch a glimpse of your joyful and generous kingdom. By your Spirit s power enable us to live like her; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. All: Amen. C: To give without counting the cost. P: To share without expecting anything in return. C: To hold all of our treasures with open hands. P: To have gospel priorities and align our life, our love and our time in their light. C: To know the freedom that comes with generosity. P: To give like the Israelites who continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. C: To give like the Macedonians who urgently pleaded for the privilege of sharing. 3

P: To give like Mary, joyfully, exceedingly and lavishly. C: To give like Jesus, lovingly, faithfully and abundantly. + Additional prayers + P: Father, we recall the words of our Savior, I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her. And so we pray, C: Take my love, my Lord, I pour. P: At your feet its treasure store. C: Take myself and I will be. P: Ever, only, all for Thee. C: Ever, only, all for Thee. All: Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER The 8:00a service concludes on page 6 with the Benediction. THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 10:45a OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his true body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another (Matthew 26:26-28). Our Lord invites to his table those who have been baptized, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28-30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. 4
