Banner We are a sharing, loving fellowship of Christian believers, rooted in biblical faith, that actively seeks and celebrates God. We desire to praise, love and serve with all our hearts in our faith community and to reach out to our neighbors, continuing the work of Jesus peacefully, simply, together. In God we find the source of all our joy. Hallelujah! J a nua r y 201 9 Po mo na F el lows hip Chu r c h o f t he Bre thr e n Vo l. 4 3, N o. 1 From our Pastor Happy New Year dear ones! January is always an appropriate time to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and look towards the future with hope. As we begin a new calendar year, I thought this might be a good time to describe some of my hopes and expectations as your new pastor. From a logistical point of view: in addition to Sundays, I plan to be working in Pomona on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. These days will include time spent in the office as well as out of the office for meetings, visitation, etc. On Tuesdays, I plan to work from home, but will be accessible via email and my cell phone. Fridays will be my Sabbath days each week. In that spirit of Rest, on these days I will not be checking email, attending meetings, etc., except in emergency cases. If you ever have a question about when I am in Pomona, you can always call the church office and Acia will know my schedule. From a pastoral point of view: as someone coming to you with a few years of chaplaincy experience, I have a real heart for pastoral and spiritual care. This means I want to know what s happening in your lives! The joys, the sorrows, the challenges: all of these experiences are made more meaningful when they are shared with your pastor and your church family. However one class I missed in seminary was: mind-reading. So if you or someone in your family is hospitalized, or experiencing another crisis, and you d like me to be aware or be present, please call me. I am looking forward to journeying with you in the mountains and valleys of life. From a spiritual point of view: our congregation is obviously anticipating a major transition in the next year. Our decision to sell our property and find a new location is both exciting and intimidating. There will be challenges along the way but we will come through this period of change stronger and more spiritually vibrant if we remember the reason for our being: Jesus. Viewing all of our decisions and actions in light of our Savior and his power to restore and redeem the world will be our anchor and our guide. May this new year give us a renewed passion for Jesus and for what his Good News can bring to Pomona and to our world. Yours in grace and peace, Pastor Lauren

Kingfisher faith In a video on his publisher s website, Eugene Peterson tells of watching a kingfisher repeatedly dive for fish in a lake. Peterson counted 37 dives before the kingfisher caught its supper! And he s the king fisher! Peterson chuckles. From that birdwatching episode, he gleaned a ministry lesson: It may take a long time and many attempts maybe dozens! before something works out. God calls us to live out his love faithfully, even when we don t seem to be accomplishing anything. Maybe we extend 36 invitations to worship, work 36 monthly shifts at a food bank or utter 36 prayers without seeing results. What s the point? we wonder. But the kingfisher urges us on: Maybe number 37 is the charm! In the words of St. Paul (and mixing fishing and farming metaphors): Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9, NIV).
