PASTOR S COLUMN MARDI GRAS HONOREES: It has been the tradition at our annual Mardi Gras dinner to honor people who have served St. Joseph Parish in outstanding ways. Based on the recommendations of the parish staff, the pastor would make the final determination. This year I have chosen to honor those who serve our parish every day as part of our parish staff. I thought this was appropriate because the members of our parish staff not only do their jobs here at St. Joseph Parish but more often than not they go beyond what is their job to serve our parish. We are blessed to have the parish staff that we have and for their selfless service to our parish we honor them this year: Sr. Sandy Pedone, HM, Lori Vasconi, Carol Koch, Brad Goodall, and Ann Smith. ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES: es will be at 12:10 and 7:00pm. There will also be a 7:00am prayer service, (not a ) on Ash Wednesday. This will consist of a prayer, scripture reading, brief homily, and the distribution of ashes. SHARON HIGH SCHOOL 12:10 MASS ON ASH WEDNESDAY: As in past years students from Sharon High School who wish to attend the 12:10 on Ash Wednesday can be released from class in order to attend. Each student must bring a letter from a parent or guardian to the School office on Monday or Tuesday (March 4 or 5) asking to be released for the Ash Wednesday at 12:10 on March 6. CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL: Today is Commitment Sunday for the Catholic Services Appeal. You can place your pledge or gift in the collection basket this week or for the next several weeks. Pledge envelopes are in the pews. Our assessment goal for the diocese is $66,000. Last year we exceeded our goal thanks to the 278 generous families and individuals who made a pledge or a one-time contribution to this appeal. This enabled us to seal the parking lot, update some computer hardware in the parish office, and address some issues with lighting in the church. We are inviting every parish family to make some gift or pledge to this campaign. If we go beyond our goal of $66,000 we plan to repair the canopy at the Clepper entrance, replace the padding in the kneelers, and continue computer upgrades to the parish offices. We are grateful to those who continue to make the Catholic Services Appeal a priority, because it is through your generous gifts that we are able to keep St. Joseph Parish moving forward. May God continue to reward you for your generosity and your thoughtfulness. Pledge envelopes are in the pews for the next several weeks. REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS: Our readings this week come from a wisdom tradition that used images from everyday life. Some of those images may not be familiar to us who are not farmers, or potters, who have never planted a tree. But those images try to speak to us about how we judge another person s character a good tree produces good fruit, and a clay pot that can stand the heat of the kiln will stand up to the everyday handling and mishandling of the pot. In simpler terms, character is revealed in what we say and what we do. Character comes from our heart, from our inner life. Today might be a good day to examine our hearts. What are the things we keep in our hearts? How do we guard against putting the wrong things in our hearts? How do we guard against bitterness, hopelessness, needless anxiety, cynicism, unfocused rage, and unforgiveness. If our fundamental calling by Jesus is to love, then those negative things have no place in our hearts. Our call to love is one that challenges us to love God, our neighbor and ourselves. But we cannot stop there. Jesus challenges us to grow in our love to the point where we are able to love even our enemies. We cannot afford to allow those negative things in to our hearts because they will harden our hearts. Today might be a good day to examine our hearts and look at what we are reading, watching on TV, looking at on the internet, listening to in music, and taking in from our relationships. What are the good things we are taking in and what are the bad things we don t want to take in? May we hold on to those things that will do our hearts good and let go of those things that will harden our hearts.

PLEASE PRAY FOR: Ed Thomas, Bill Lasche, Lorraine Penhos, Lillian Fabrey, Ed Benedict, Donna Fraley, Tess McCallen, Toni Ryan, Tony Perry, Ruth Perry, Gerrie Derr, Emily Spielvogle and Leah Martin. ~~ ALL WEEKEND MASS ~~ UPCOMING 2nd QUARTER SCHEDULE Altar Servers - Lectors - Eucharistic Ministers - Greeters We will begin in March the process of preparing for the 2nd quarter schedule of which runs from April 6 June 30,.
