A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Several years ago a series of photos went viral over the internet. There were two churches across the street from each other, one Catholic and the other Presbyterian, and they carried out a little theological debate on their outdoor signs. It went like this: Catholic: All dogs go to heaven. Presbyterian: Only humans go to heaven. Read the Bible. Catholic: God loves all his creation. Dogs Included. Presbyterian: Dogs don't have souls. This is not open to debate. Catholic: Catholic dogs go to heaven. Presbyterian dogs can talk to their pastor. Presbyterian: Converting to Catholicism does not magically grant your dog a soul. Catholic: Free dog souls with conversion. Presbyterian: Dogs are animals. There aren't any rocks in heaven either. Catholic: All rocks go to heaven That Catholic parish was right, and St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas would agree. Contrary to what the Presbyterian sign said, animals do have souls, but they are different from human souls. Humans have human souls. That means that at the level of the soul, not the brain, people are able to know and understand and experience God in a particularly human way. Animals have animal souls. Their souls experience God the way an animal would. When it comes to the whole issue of salvation, critters have it way better than humans. Because animals are not human and do not have human souls, they are not subject to the Fall. Animals do not sin. They still live in a state of perfection. Animals still live in the Garden of Eden. Of course, most people do not understand this because they mistakenly think that the Garden of Eden was a place without any sort of pain or struggle, but that ain't true. The story of the Garden of Eden says that humanity lived in a primal state of innocence and immediate connection to God. Adam and Eve lost that innocence and immediate connection, and that made the pain and struggle of life seem meaningless. But in connection with God, pain and struggle can be most meaningful. We have countless martyrs who attest to that. So animals still have that innocence and immediate connection to God that humans lost (and then found again through Christ). In fact, Pope Paul VI once said, One day we will see our pets in the eternity of Christ. Pope Paul VI was known to have had a great love for horses. Moreover, the Catechism of the Church #2416 says: Animals are God's creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals. So I think it is rather myopic to say that animals do not go to heaven. They are already in heaven. When animals die, their animal souls still do what they did when they were connected to their physical bodies. They continue to bless and glorify their Creator. They spend eternity rejoicing in God's presence, licking his face and rubbing against his shins. As the Catechism of the Church says, animals, by their very existence, bless and glorify God. So in gratitude for these animals, these natural blessings, these icons of the Garden of Eden, today we celebrate our annual Rite of the Blessing of Animals. Please bring all your animal friends to the courtyard on the south side of church at 1pm for this special Rite. If you do not have a pet, come anyway and celebrate all our furry, barking, purring blessings. And feel free to bring your rocks, too! Fr. Michael

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH October is Domestic Violence Month. I am proud to announce that Divine Infant Church has been a part of a Domestic Violence Ministry for the past three years. Our ministry is small in number but it is filled with compassionate and determined members to bring awareness of domestic violence to the community of Divine Infant Church. During the month of October we will be hosting a talk for all teens ages 13 19 on teen dating and domestic violence. This talk will be held on Thursday, October 6 th in Lagan Hall beginning at 7:00 PM. All teens are encouraged to attend this very informative talk. We also encourage all parents to attend this same talk. All details will be posted in the church bulletin over the next couple of weeks. We will also have a Domestic Violence Giving Tree set up in the vestibule of the church during the entire month of October. Purple hearts will display articles that are needed by women and children staying at a local Constance Morris House. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Look for purple carnations on the weekend of October 8 th & 9 th. All proceeds will go towards Divine Infant s Domestic Violence Ministry. It is our hope to buy fleece blankets to be given out to the women and children staying at the Constance Morris House during the Christmas Season. On Sunday, October 16 th an outreach coordinator from the Constance Morris House will be available in the vestibule of the church after the 9:30 and 11:30 masses to greet parishioners and answer any questions that you may have regarding domestic violence. Remember one in four women have experienced some sort of abuse in their life. If you know of someone who could use help, please stop by and meet our outreach coordinator. Blessings, Jeannette Barczak Domestic Violence Ministry TEEN DATING AND PHYSICAL ABUSE 1.5 Million High School students in the U.S. experience physical abuse from dating a partner in a single year. 1 in 10 High School students are physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend. 1/4 of High School girls are victims of physical and/or sexual abuse. This occurs among ALL types of families. No one family is exempt. The Domestic Violence Ministry at Divine Infant Church is proud to be hosting a talk on Teen Dating and Physical Abuse. This talk will be presented by the members of Pillars. Pillars is one of the largest nonprofit providers of mental health and social services in our Western Suburbs. They aspire to build healthier communities by making connections and changing lives. We invite all teens ages 13 19 to attend this informative talk. BLESSING OF PETS Our annual Rite of Blessing for Pets will be held this Sunday the 2nd of October at 1:00pm in the courtyard on the south side of the church. Bring your dogs, cats, guinea pigs, regular pigs, fish, crocodiles, tarantulas, and any other non-human friend for this special blessing!

Using the animal on their desks as inspiration, the First Grade is writing stories about circus acts and animals. They told which animal or act they like the best and why. On Wednesday, they will make a clown project and enjoy the treat, circus animal crackers. Grade 1 is beginning a unit in Science about Animal Habitats. First we discussed the different types of habitats. Then we discussed how plants and animals can be associated with their environments by their characteristics. Students were then given picture cards and they had to decide which environment the animal would live in. ANOINTING OF THE SICK This beautiful Sacrament will take place at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 8 and at the 9:30 a.m. Mass on October 9. All who are suffering or encumbered in any way are welcome to participate! EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION TRAINING For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. (Rom. 12:4-5) As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to serve one another. In the liturgy of the Mass we express our faith in the real presence of Christ as we receive the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. One of the best ways to answer the call to serve is to distribute Holy Communion during the Mass. There will be a training be become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion on Saturday, October 15 at 3PM in the Rectory. If you would like to become an Extraordinary Minister, please register at the Rectory, (708) 865-8071. ELECTION DAY IS COMING BE SURE TO BE A PROPERLY INFORMED VOTER! As election time approaches many people are trying to come to a decision about how they will, in good conscience, cast their ballot. We have come across an excellent pamphlet that will help you understand the process involved. It is written in an easy question and answer format and only takes a short time to read. We are asking that you to take a pamphlet on your way out of Church today and that you prayerfully read it as you make your choices this election season. Let us all pray that we do what is right in God s eyes.

JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our organizational rehearsal on Wednesday, October 19, from 7:15 PM until 8:30 PM in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. This group has already started their season but Mrs. Schindler, our organist, is always happy to meet new young people interested in joining this group. New this year is a group of junior high students from our School and Religious Education classes that we are calling DI Singers. Our school children are rehearsing on Mondays as part of their liturgical music studies. Our Religious Education students practice from 6:10-6:30 on Mondays before RE classes. Please encourage anyone in grades 6-8 who likes to sing to join our group. They will sing once a month with another choir for this year. Welcome DI Singers! The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our DI Hand Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. Our DI Children s Choir (grades 2-4) has already begun their season. We welcomed a few new voices in this choir, too, during September! The children rehearse on Sunday mornings from 8:30 am - 9:15 am in the music room of the school and sing once a month at Sunday mass. This group will be open to new membership including 1st graders right after Christmas! The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. We welcomed Mary Pytko our cantor program this summer. We plan to feature our new cantors from the last couple of years in our Cantor Corner on the Music tab of the DI Web Site soon. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. Support the Chastity Education Initiative of the Archdiocese of Chicago. This initiative has brought the wonderful message of chastity and respect for human life to more than 250,000 teens, parents, and young adults throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago and beyond in the past fourteen years. We need your help! Support the Initiative by coming to the annual Educating Minds, Inspiring Hearts Benefit Dinner. The work of the initiative is only possible through generous donor support. The Benefit Dinner is on Sunday, October 9 th, at 5pm at the Drury Lane in Oakbrook. Tickets are $90 for adults and $60 for teens. This year s keynote speaker is Vicki Thorn, foundress of Project Rachel, the foremost post-abortion healing ministry of the Catholic Church that is sponsored by more than 110 dioceses nationally and internationally. PRO-LIFE ITEMS FOR SALE THIS WEEKEND Members of the Pro-Life Committee are in the vestibule this weekend selling pro-life items and having free pamphlets and other material available. Come in the back and meet us and see the material we have available. This year we are again encouraging anyone with an email account to give us your email address so we can inform you when legislation is pending. Often groups (especially the NCHLA a branch of the USCCB) have a response set up online so you can send your senators or representatives an email in less than 2 minutes. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE BANNER This weekend, members of our parish will carry the Our Lady of Guadalupe Banner up in the procession before each Mass begins and placed the banner near the altar. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the unborn. She has been given this title because when she appeared to Juan Diego, she was said to be pregnant wearing the cinta, a sash pregnant women wore. Please pray to Our Lady especially under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe to change minds and hearts in this world and end the destruction of our tiniest brothers and sisters in the womb. The banner will remain near the altar through the month of October (Respect Life Month). LIFE CHAIN OCTOBER 2 2:30-3:30PM The Divine Infant Pro-Life Committee is sponsoring their annual Life Chain from 2:30 3:30pm this Sunday, October 2. This is the one time a year we have the opportunity to extend the boundaries of our Church beyond the building itself. Too many times, the lack of visibility is taken to mean agreement with what is going on in the world. Come and join us and pray the Rosary for Pro- Life Intentions on Mannheim. We will have signs if you want one. If you do not want to hold a sign you do not have to. It is a time of prayerful witness to the fact that all human beings at every stage of existence have a right to life. It is only through prayer that we will succeed in changing minds and hearts. We meet next Sunday to pray! We will begin to gather at 2:15pm at the corner of Wight and Mannheim. Wight is one block south of Canterbury Street. You may bring a chair if you feel that you cannot stand for the hour. You are welcome to come and pray for as long as you can - you don t have to be there for the whole hour. DIVINE PROVIDENCE OVER 50 CLUB Our next meeting will be October 5, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m. Tickets will be available for our Thanksgiving Luncheon which will be held on November 2 nd at noon. BAPTISMS: Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of the month at 12:45 pm. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at 865-8071. WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
