RESOLUTION NO. 1 Dedication of Convention and Declaration of Principles WHEREAS, the of the is in session at the 116th Annual Meeting pursuant to the Constitution and Bylaws of the Order, and WHEREAS, the of the meets in the desire that its deliberations will rouse greater interest and perpetuate greater areas of apostolic and socially aware activities by members of the Order, and WHEREAS, as the should work in a unified and efficient manner toward strengthening a more just society for the benefit of the church, community, members and all people, and WHEREAS, as citizens of the United States of America, we turn for intercession to our Blessed Mother under the title of the Immaculate Conception and to Our Lady of Guadalupe as patroness of the Americas. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the of the Knights of Columbus, duly assembled at this 116th Annual Meeting, humbly dedicate its deliberations to the improvement of society according to Catholic Christian principles and in so deliberating on all resolutions, it utilizes the principles of wisdom, patience and fraternal charity to promote the common good according to Catholic Christian principles in union with Jesus our Savior and Mary our Holy Mother, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of the of the Knights of Columbus reaffirm the following declarations of purposes as espoused within the Charter of the to render pecuniary aid to members and their families; to render mutual aid and assistance to sick, disabled and needy members and their families; to promote social and intellectual intercourse among members and their families; and to promote and conduct educational work, charitable work, religious work, social welfare, war relief and welfare, and public relief work. RESOLUTION NO. 2 Beatification of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney WHEREAS, Father Michael J. McGivney was a parish priest in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882 when he enlisted the aid of others to establish an organization for the purpose of (i) rendering mutual aid and assistance to its sick, disabled and needy members and their families, and (ii) for the promotion of the social and intellectual intercourse among members and their families, and (iii) promoting and conducting educational, charitable, religious, social welfare and relief work, and WHEREAS, the Order is the embodiment of Fr. McGivney s vision, fulfilling its purpose of charity and evangelization, and WHEREAS, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI recognized the heroic virtues of Fr. McGivney, advancing the Vatican s process towards his sainthood and giving him the distinction of being a Venerable Servant of God. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the of the Knights of Columbus hereby prays that Father Michael J. RESOLUTION NO. 3 Appreciation of All the Clergy and Religious WHEREAS, the of the is deeply grateful of the many benefits provided to its members by the Pope, bishops and clergy, and WHEREAS, the of the wishes to renew its pledge of continued love, loyalty and submission, and wishes to assure the clergy that the Knights of Columbus will always be at their service and that of the Church, and wishes to further promise unswerving loyalty to the hierarchy of the Church, and WHEREAS, the activities of the 116 th Annual Meeting of the of the Knights of Columbus have been enhanced in its significance and dignity by the presence of our Worthy State Chaplain, the Very Reverend William E. Reynolds and our four Assistant State Chaplains. RESOLUTION NO. 8 Appreciation of Host Committee WHEREAS, this 2017 State Convention of the of the has been hosted by a committee of Knights and their wives from local councils in the Dubuque area, chaired by brother Knight Michael DeMoully, and WHEREAS, Michael DeMoully, and those other brother Knights, together with their wives, have worked very hard and have been very gracious in their hospitality extended to the attendees of this 2017 State Convention. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the of the Knights of Columbus hereby extends to Michael DeMoully and all other members, wives and friends who assisted in the preparation of this State Convention, its sincere appreciation and profound thanks for the cordial welcome and fine hospitality shown to all members in attendance, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of of the Knights of Columbus rise and by acclamation, express their appreciation for the outstanding hospitality of Michael and Jan DeMoully and all other members, wives and friends who assisted in the preparation of this 2017 State Convention. RESOLUTION NO. 9 Supporting a Culture of Life WHEREAS, the Iowa has always held a steadfast support for a Culture of Life, and WHEREAS, the Catholic Bishops of Iowa support the protection of life from conception until natural death, and WHEREAS, the Iowa Catholic Conference, with the support of many Iowans, asks the legislature to stop the use and trafficking of fetal body parts resulting from an abortion, and to retain Iowa s law rejecting doctor-prescribed suicide and euthanasia. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the of the Knights of Columbus and its members lend their prayers and support for a Culture of Life, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Iowa will encourage its members, their families, and parishes in Iowa to be and remain involved in communicating with their elected officials, gathering information from the Iowa Catholic Conference s website and through their Legislature Network. RESOLUTION NO. 10 Welcome the Stranger WHEREAS, the Catholic bishops of the United States recognize the right of our nation to control and protect its borders, and WHEREAS, the bishops oppose enforcement only immigration policies and believe that the human rights of undocumented migrants should be respected, and WHEREAS, the Iowa believes there is a Scriptural obligation to welcome the stranger, and WHEREAS, there are numerous legislative proposals promoting local law enforcement of federal immigration laws without accounting for the current relationships of trust between Iowa law enforcement and immigrant communities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Iowa supports merciful public policies that- for the sake of family unity and being humane- offer special consideration to protecting the human rights of immigrants, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that upon passage of this Resolution by the of the at the 116 th Annual Meeting, that the same be presented to the Supreme Office for consideration by the delegates to the 2017 Supreme Convention.
