God the Father ADVENT SEASON 1. ADVENT NOVENA MEDITATION C REATION, including ourselves, is part of a master-plan of the Creator. But when man, created in innocence, finally appeared on the scene, he chose not to cooperate with the mysterious growth into the image of the Creator. Since all have sinned (Rom 3:23), this sin of the world brought about man s inability to realize the divinely-intended freedom into which he is to grow. Hence, Redemption by Jesus, Who took away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29), became necessary. Only in Christ has sinful man the power to become the heavenly man, as intended by God (1 Cor 15:45-49). Advent is the time of more than usual eager longing, awaiting our revelation as sons of God (Rom 8: 19). It is the waiting for Christ s coming in grace on 16

18 Part 1: The Holy Trinity NOVENA PRAYERS Novena Prayer FATHER, all-powerful and ever-living God, I give You thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. When He humbled Himself to come among us as a Man, He fulfilled the plan You formed long ago and opened for us the way to salvation. Now I watch for the day, hoping that the salvation promised us will be mine, when Christ our Lord will come again in His glory. His future coming was proclaimed by all the Prophets. The Virgin Mother bore Him in her womb with love beyond all telling. John the Baptist was His herald and made Him known when at last He came. In His love He has filled us with joy as we prepare to celebrate His birth. When He comes, may He find me watching in prayer, my heart filled with wonder and praise. In memory of the coming of our Lord and Savior, I beg You, Father, to grant me all the graces I need to be prepared for His coming to my soul on Christmas. I ask in particular this favor: (Mention your request). For the love Jesus, Your Son, has shown us in becoming Man to save us, I beg You to grant my prayer, if it be Your holy Will.

EASTER SEASON 10. EASTER NOVENA MEDITATION T HROUGH His Resurrection Jesus Christ was made known to us as God s Son in power, for He was obedient unto death and exalted as Lord of all. God chose His Son to be the one to suffer and to die for our sins. Because of His obedience He was raised up as Lord of all. By conquering death through His own power in His Resurrection, Jesus has shown Himself Master of life and death. Therefore He is true God and true Man, our Savior. By His Death and Resurrection Jesus redeemed mankind from slavery to sin and to the devil. In obedience to His Father s Will He gave Himself for us in His Passion and arose from the dead that He might redeem us from sin and make us a people pleasing to the Father. He is the Messiah, God s own Son. He often said that what He was doing was done that the Scriptures might be fulfilled, because He saw His Father s Will in them. 82

84 Part 1: The Holy Trinity I handed on to you first of all what I myself received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that He was buried; that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; that He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve. After that He was seen by five hundred brothers and sisters at once. 1 Cor 15:3-5 NOVENA PRAYERS Novena Prayer JESUS, I believe that by Your own power You rose from death, as You promised, a glorious Victor. May this mystery strengthen my hope in another and better life after death, the resurrection of my body on the last day, and an eternity of happiness. I firmly hope that You will keep Your promise to me and raise me up glorified. Through Your glorious Resurrection I hope that You will make my body like Your own in glory and life, and permit me to dwell with You in heaven for all eternity. I believe that Your Resurrection is the crown of Your life and work as God-Man, because it is Your glorification. This is the beginning of the glorious life that was due to You as the Son of God. Your Resurrection is also the reward of Your life of suffering. Jesus, my Risen Lord and King, I adore Your Sacred Humanity which receives this eternal

27. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE (December 12) MEDITATION A CCORDING to tradition the Blessed Virgin appeared to a fifty-five-year-old Aztec Indian Juan Diego, who was hurrying to Mass in Mexico City, on Saturday, December 9, 1531. She sent him to Bishop Zumaraga to ask that a church be built on the spot where she stood. She was at the same place that evening and Sunday evening to get the bishop s answer. After cross-questioning Juan, the bishop ordered him to ask for a sign from the lady who had said she was the Mother of God. Mary spoke to Juan in these words: Know and take heed, my dear little son, that I am the holy Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of the true God for Whom we live, the Creator of all the world, Maker of heaven 222

224 Part 2: The Blessed Virgin Mary you Our Lady of Guadalupe are recognized as Queen and Mother, America and Mexico are saved. He proclaimed her the Patroness of the Americas. The United States was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1846. The Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the image of the Immaculate Conception. As patroness of Pan- American unity, Our Lady of Guadalupe influences her children to turn toward one another in common love for her and her beloved Son. Because of the close link between the Church in Mexico and the Church in the United States this feast is also celebrated in the United States on December 12. THE WORD OF GOD l have chosen and sanctified this place, that my name may be there forever, and my eyes and my heart may be there perpetually. 2 Chr 7:16 You are beautiful..., O My love, as comely as Jerusalem, as awe-inspiring as an army in battle array. Song 6:4 Who is she that comes forth like the morning rising, as beautiful as the moon, as bright as the sun, as awe-inspiring as an army in battle array? Song 6:10 NOVENA PRAYERS Novena Prayer OUR Lady of Guadalupe, according to your message in Mexico I venerate you as the Virgin Mother of the true God for Whom we
