First Presbyterian Church 101 S. Center St., Marshalltown, Iowa 50158 Phone 641-753-5929 E-mail presmtwn@mchsi.com www.nivlac.org 9:00 a.m. November 2, 2014 Welcome, brothers and sisters in Christ! It's good to be here together to worship our Lord. Large print bulletins are available and children s bulletins are available on the table in the Narthex. A nursery is available for infants up to 5 years of age.

Those who are able are invited to stand. PRELUDE Holy, Holy, Holy John Dykes LIFE OF THE CONGREGATION Moment of silence to prepare your hearts for worship SONG OF DEVOTION (hymnal & screen) (please remain seated) #595 I Give All to You (vs. 1) LET US WORSHIP GOD TOGETHER CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 28:1-2, 6-7) Leader: To You, Lord, I call; You are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if You remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit. People: Hear my cry for mercy as I call to You for help, as I lift up my hands toward Your Most Holy Place. Leader: Praise be to the Lord, for He has heard my cry for mercy. People: The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him. INVOCATION Leader: Almighty God, cover us in Your grace and bestow on us Your righteousness so that we might worship You in spirit and truth. Bind the evil one from our lives and cleanse from us the guilt that he threw in our face. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. SONGS OF PRAISE (insert, hymnal & screen) Shout to the North #88 More Precious than Silver CALL TO CONFESSION (Romans 3:19-20) Leader: Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in God s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. The law of God convicts us all of our sinfulness. We have no righteousness of our own. We must seek God s mercy for our sin and put our faith in Jesus Christ, the only mediator and cure for our sin. Please join me in silent prayer. SILENT PRAYER

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Unison: Lord Jesus we confess that we are sinners and have broken the law of God. Our guilt is real and we bear our shame and brokenness. Forgive us with Your grace, and wipe away our guilt and shame through Your resurrection power. In Jesus name we pray. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Romans 3:21-26) Leader: But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance, He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished He did it to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Sisters and brothers in Christ, believe the good news: you are forgiven. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Dr. Richard A. King SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Communion is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. Partake of the bread as it is served; Hold the cup to drink together as one body. LET US LIVE IN THE POWER OF GOD S SPIRIT HYMN OF DEDICATION (hymnal & screen) #344 Grace Greater than Our Sin CHARGE & BENEDICTION ORGAN RESPONSE POSTLUDE What we believe: The clearest declaration of God s glory is found in His Word, both incarnate and written. The Son eternally proceeds from the Father as His Word, the full expression of the Father s nature, and since in the incarnation the Word became flesh all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are offered to His disciples. The written Word grants us those treasures, proclaims the saving gospel of Jesus Christ, and graciously teaches all that is necessary for faith and life. We glorify God by recognizing and receiving His authoritative self-revelation, both in the infallible Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and also in the incarnation of God the Son.
