COMMANDER S MESSAGE As the year comes to a close I would like to thank the many members of our Post, the Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Riders for the support that you have provided to your Post during this past year. It has been a great and busy 6 months as your Commander and I look forward to next year to continue to grow our Post and keep on promoting those things that make up the American Legion Family. Although to some it does not look like we have been busy, the series of functions that we have had this year have been numerous starting with our SAL Oyster Roast, Memorial Day Services, July 4 th Celebration, Mexican Night, Flag Retirement Ceremony, Hawaiian Luau, Auxiliary s Pork Chop Dinner, SAL s Fish Fry, ALR Spaghetti Dinner, Fund Raiser Dinner at Jason s Deli, and our upcoming Christmas Party which will be held on December 17 th. Unfortunately, we have had several Post Everlasting Ceremony for our fallen comrades Sonny Brown, Kay Godawski, Richard Seabrook and Julius Oliver Jr. The property on Mutual Drive is now history and the closing was held on November 15, 2016. As agreed by the Executive Committee half of the funds were placed in our savings account and the other half to our checking account to use towards our new building. The first meeting of the Construction Planning Committee will be held on December 8, 2016 at 6:00 pm, anyone that would like to help your post in this challenge is welcome to attend. Approximately $300.00 from our funds was used to help our fellow veterans including purchasing bus passes and we also adopted two children from the Angels Tree at our local VA Hospital. One of our legionnaire received a $2400.00 grant from the National Emergency Fund. Your Post is now also affiliated with America Serves Network and the Tri-County Veterans Support Network, by joining these two agencies we will be able to provide better service to those veterans that come to us for help. Tickets are now available at the Canteen for the Department of South Carolina 2017-2018 Rifle Raffle, there are a total of 52 long guns, rifles and shotguns including five AR-15s up for grab. The tickets are $25.00 each with 20% of all ticket sales remaining at the Post. Each ticket will give the holder 52 chances to win a weapon. All prizes are provided by Palmetto State Armory. May the message of Christmas fill your life with joy and peace and best wishes for a bright and special New Year. Should any member need to contact me please feel free to do so at 843-991-6308 or via email at alpost179@gmail.com, remember however that matters pertaining to the Post are best brought up at your General Membership Meeting. For God and Country, John Coy Commander

FROM THE ADJUTANT Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and have a great holiday season. As of this writing Post Membership stands at 317 active members. Thank you for your response on renewals. We are at 80 percent renew for 2017 which met the state goal of 80 % by October. If you haven t renewed yet please do so. We are adding new Legion, Sons and Auxiliary Members each month. Our Legion family is growing stronger and able to support our veterans who need assistance better as a result. The efforts of all are appreciated. For God and Country, Dave Lloyd AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY Ladies we will meet at our regular time on December 7 th @ 6:30 PM, but we will have our Christmas Party instead of a meeting. But we will meet for 10 minutes, as we need to vote in 3 new members. Please bring a light dish or chips. Bring a gift for exchange ($20.00 or less). Congratulations to Jeff O Donnell on winning the grill. Thank you to everyone that took a chance, this money will go to help us with our Veterans and their families. We will meet at the Post @ 10:00 AM Saturday, December 3 rd and carpool to the VA hospital to cook lunch for the guys (Susie s spaghetti sauce) at Patriots Harbor All are welcome to join us. December 10 th, we are ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at West Ashley Wal-Mart. I do think we have all the slots filled and a big thank you to everyone that signed up, but if anyone would like to add themselves please do, because it doesn t hurt to have multiple people at the doors We do this because we are able to collect a good amount of money and we also save them on having to pay people, so it is a win win for the day. Thanks to the Auxiliary, SAL, ALR and the Legion as we collected $400.00 to buy bus passes and food vouchers that we donated to the VA for the Veterans. Jill, Becky, Sonja, Susie and Melanie made a day of taking these to the VA and the can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House, oh and we enjoyed lunch at Fleet Landing. Continue to bring in those can tabs, with all the donations that are given, they generate approximately $10,000.00 a year. Please, if you haven t paid your dues it is past time see Liz, we would like to be at 100%. Merry Christmas to everyone and have a safe and Happy New Year Jill Comar

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION (SAL) We ve finally come to the end of the year where we always ask ourselves, Did I do enough good this year or am I glad it is over? Well, if you are part or parcel of the SAL, know that, Yes, you did good! We elected a fine man to run things for us Paul Jaeger What? Oh, yeah, we also elected Trump for President, I mean if you voted. Although that last part wasn t really just the SAL s doing. We look back over the year and find out that the good we did benefitted a lot of people and organizations such as the Dog Tags, the S.C. Special Olympics, the Salvation Army and our own Boy Scout Troop 63. Not to mention our own Post 179, which in turn helped us be better men. We ve learned none of this could happen if it weren t for members like you, which reminds me that some of you need to get your dues paid up for the next year, so that we can be counted on to do the same if not better in the coming year. We have an Oyster Roast coming in February. Well, did you notice, I started all the paragraphs with a W and an E, because it s WE who make it happen! Norman W. Meyer, Jr. AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS (ALR) As our tires cross over into the new coming year, let s look into our rear view mirrors and see where we ve been. The ALR 179 have tried and succeeded in doing good for our fellow man and woman and for our Post 179. There have been rides in which we helped veterans and the community around us. Money has been raised in the efforts to do so. Biker Santa and his elves helped the Salvation Army and run Christmas in July. As a group, we donated a storage container to the Post. It s big and blue, if you have not seen it. New members keep joining, so that we may grow and be powerful in our efforts to achieve whatever is possible. A lot of thanks to our new ALR Director, Jim Pearce, who has taken the handlebars with a firm grip, throttled down and burnt rubber leading the way! Norman W. Meyer, Jr.

CANTEEN NEWS Thanks to the 3Bs, Karen, Nathan and Ashley for being our Wednesday Night chefs. Wing night continues to be our best night; Volunteers are welcomed with open arms. Post everlasting We had to say goodbye to Julius Oliver Jr. The Post 166 Poker Run brought in many new faces who were relatively impressed with our little Post. We received positive feedback from the District 2 meeting. To all those involved keep up the good work. The monthly birthday party went well, many thanks to those that participated. Future Events: December 4 th the SAL will sponsor the monthly breakfast from 9:00 until 11:00. We will combine the December and January monthly birthdays and hold it in January. The annual Post 179 Christmas Party will be held on December 17, starting at 5:00 PM. This event is potluck so the bartenders will be keeping the list of fixins. We are looking at the possibility of having a New Year s Eve party. If you are interested, please let the bartender know. If the interest is there, we will send out an update. Holiday schedules: On Christmas day, we will open at noon. bartender. In addition, following the annual tradition, Mike Sadler will be the guest We hope for your continued support, and look forward to your next visit.
