Pastor s Notes BECOMING CATHOLIC As pastor of St. Mary's, I am privileged when people share with me their stories of faith. Many people here have shared with me that they became Catholic as adults; some were previously unbaptized, many were baptized Christians but belonged to other communities. A common theme is how the search for God and a relationship with Jesus led them to the Catholic faith. At this time of year, St. Mary's invites those who are considering becoming Catholic to invest themselves in a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This process is a blend of prayer, reading, and conversations with committed Catholics as well as other people who are seekers that are coming to faith. The RCIA program begins here October 7, with Father Matthew Kowalski as the spiritual director. If you are interested in learning more about RCIA, please contact Father Matthew at: mkowalski@churchofstmary.org. One comment: God has blessed the Catholic Church with three popes in a row who have made strong impressions on both believers and non-believers. Blessed John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have each reached people with a message about the importance of belonging to Jesus Christ and being a member of his body, the Church. It's up to us, here on the local level, to extend an invitation to members of our families and community to become part of the Catholic Church. May the Holy Spirit guide our efforts this year. THE ASSUMPTION Thursday, August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. Mass will be offered at 6:30am, 8:00am, Noon, 5:15pm and 7:00pm. A complimentary hot dog lunch will be served after the Noon Mass. FOR THE GLORY OF GOD Samuel Suter, our parish music director since 1976, will be retiring at the end of August. For over a generation, Samuel has helped us offer fitting worship to God with the prayerful music that has been a hallmark of our liturgies at St. Mary. I invite you to join me in thanking Samuel for the contribution he has made to our parish. When you think of all the sacred moments (weddings, funerals, confirmations, etc.) for which Samuel has provided music, he has certainly been an important part of our parish community. We wish him and his wife, Jean, many blessings and good health in the coming years. Our new music director will be John Chapman. John comes to us from St. Norbert Parish in Northbrook. John will begin here in September. If you are a returning member of our parish choir or are interested in joining our choir, the first rehearsal of the season will be on Thursday evening, September 5. Please watch for more details in the upcoming bulletins. COME AND FOLLOW ME St. Mary's is blessed to have a number of vocations to the priesthood. I am happy to share with you that Greg Kobus of our parish has begun his preparation for the priesthood at Mundelein Seminary. Greg studied Economics at the University of Chicago and then worked at the Board of Trade. More recently he began discerning if God is calling him to become a priest. After participating in the INSEARCH program and making two weekend retreats at the seminary, Greg applied for admission and is now in the Pre-Theology program. Please keep Greg in your prayers. BECOMING GOOD STEWARDS Please join me in welcoming Mary Kelly to our staff as our Director of Stewardship & Development. Mary has previously worked with Marquette University and Barat College. Since St. Mary was founded in 1875, our parish has been blessed by the generous support of her parishioners. As we begin participating in the "To Teach Who Christ Is" campaign, it seemed the right time for introducing a staff member who promotes a spirit of stewardship and also oversees our development efforts. Mary is married to Jerome and has one son in the School of St. Mary. I look forward to working with Mary. continued on the next page

VICAR FOR DEACONS There are three orders within the Sacrament of Holy Orders: Bishop, Priest and Deacon. There are two types of deacons: transitional (those who are on the way to being ordained priests) and permanent (those who will be deacons for life). The Archdiocese of Chicago has the largest group of permanent deacons of any diocese in the Catholic Church: approximately 700 deacons. For the past four years, our parish has been fortunate to have Deacon Dick Hudzik on our staff. Francis Cardinal George has now appointed Dick to serve as his Vicar for Deacons. A "vicar" acts on behalf of the bishop, usually overseeing a particular area (priests, religious, schools). Given Dick's gifts and talents, I can readily see why Cardinal George is entrusting him with this responsibility. Dick and his wife Becky have relocated to Westchester so that he may be closer to the Office for Deacons. Given the new work and arrangements, Dick will soon be stepping off St. Mary's staff and connect with a parish near his home. Please join me in thanking Dick for his service to St. Mary and for his service now to the larger archdiocese. PRAYER Each Wednesday, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in our church from 8:30am until 7:30pm for prayer and adoration. The number of parishioners who spend time in prayer here on Wednesdays is growing and I hope more people will participate. How does adoration "work?" The consecrated host is placed in a vessel called a "monstrance" (from the Latin word for "show"), and the monstrance is set on the altar. This lets people see the Eucharist, helping us focus our attention and lift up our prayers to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Some folks bring prayer books, and others simply sit or kneel in silent prayer. The duration of prayer is up to the individual; some people pray for ten minutes, others dedicate an hour for prayer. I encourage you to spend time with the Lord on Wednesdays. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern94@gmail.com

Monday, August 19 at 7:00pm Senior Leadership Dinner Seniors are invited to start this year off right with a leadership gathering for COR. Through prayer and discussion, you are welcome to share your ideas for COR this year and learn about Christian leadership. Dinner will be served in the Parish Center. Sunday, August 25 at 7:00pm COR Kick Off! Our first COR meeting of the year will follow the 6:00pm Mass. Join us for games, friendship and faith before you head off to school! Never been before? Not a problem! Newbies are welcome to join! Tuesday, August 27 from 7:30-8:15pm Bible Study Each Tuesday a group of high school students meets in the Parish Center basement for Bible Study. No experience or knowledge of the Bible is required. All are welcome to come and learn about God s word. September 14-15 Applications for our freshman and sophomore retreat are now available on the Church of St. Mary website. Hosted with St. Patrick s Lifeteen group, this retreat will take place overnight at Lake Geneva! Please turn in applications by August 29 to the Youth Ministry Office in the Parish Center. Looking for Young Adult Volunteers COR High School Youth Ministry is looking for additional young adult volunteers for our events. Candidates should be faithful Catholics and have a desire to lead teens to Christ. Do you know a recent college graduate or young adult who may fit this description? If so, please contact Alli Harvey for more information. Time commitments are flexible. **COR High School Youth Ministry is open to all students in grades 9-12. Students are welcome to come to any and all activities that peak their interest. Consider getting involved with one of our upcoming events!

St. Mary s Vacation Bible School was a Summertime Blast! In July, children participated in an active, fun-filled week in Vacation Bible School. The activities focused on learning more about Jesus in the Eucharist, lives of the saints, daily Bible verses, the Mass, and military priests with the World Eucharist Mission. A highlight of the week was on Thursday when Father Mike celebrated Mass and explained the meaning of his vestments and the different parts of the liturgy. VBS children and their families contributed $476.57 to the Archdiocese for the Military Services and collected a variety of toiletry and personal items for the military priests. All this was possible because of an amazing contribution of time and talent from about 100 student and adult volunteers. Bible Study 2013/2014 Galatians: Set Free to Live Paul's Letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: "What must we do to be saved?" This fascinating letter reveals the merciful love that God the Father has for us, his children. It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and it explains how we can unite ourselves to Christ's redeeming sacrifice through faith and love. Galatians is a study that will reignite your love for God as you learn of the astonishing love God has for you. 2nd Corinthians In his Letters to the Corinthians, Paul addresses ongoing problems including dissension, immorality, lawsuits, liturgical abuses and the tendency to fall prey to "false teachers." Paul tackles each of these problems with his typical spiritual zeal strengthening their faith and commitment to build up the Body of Christ. Two thousand years later, as we struggle with much the same problems, Paul's words of wisdom are both pertinent and valuable!
