GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Brother Knights Weeks ago, I had finished this month s Grand Knight letter. In it, I thanked Brother Knights for stepping up to chair events. It highlighted the planning and execution of our 50 s Sock Hop, and our successful Parish Christmas party. I was all ready for the editor until our December Business Meeting, and our half-hour discussion on Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. That sent me off on a trail resulting in my reading The History of Eucharistic Adoration Development of Doctrine in the Catholic Church by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J. This is an excellent read, and I recommend it to you, my brother Knights. This book led me to read Pope Paul VI encyclical Mysterium Fidei, which led me to the following quote: "I believe in my heart and openly profess that the bread and wine that are placed on the altar are, through the mystery of the sacred prayer and the words of the Redeemer, substantially changed into the true and proper and lifegiving flesh and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord, and that after the consecration they are the true body of Christ which was born of the Virgin and which hung on the Cross as an offering for the salvation of the world and the true blood of Christ which flowed from His side and not just as a sign and by reason of the power of the sacrament, but in the very truth and reality of their substance and in what is proper to their nature." This is our belief, so we should keep that in mind while we continue to work on scheduling issues and our participation in weekly Eucharistic Adoration. As Knights and Catholic gentlemen, we should do no less. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas Season, and on to the second half of our fraternal year. Vivat Jesus, Nick Caleca GK PAGE 3

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR D ear Brother Sir Knights Depending on when you receive this newsletter, I hope you have or had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. While life is good for most of us, we recently lost 2 Sir Knights. Sir Knight Anthony Maio passed away November 9. Color Corp Commander Tony Gerbino led 6 other Sir Knights in an Honor Guard at the funeral which was much appreciated by the family. Also several other Knights were in attendance. Sir Knight Lou Tovey passed away November 25. Lou was a founding member of our Assembly, very active in our assembly, council, church, community and the Knights of Columbus at the state level. Lou had moved to Pennsylvania 2 years ago to be close to family. His funeral service was held there December 7. Our monthly pancake breakfasts continue to go well with 90 breakfasts served at the November breakfast. Many thanks to Pancake Breakfast Chairman John Boa and the crew of other dedicated Knights who work at the breakfasts. Let s continue to get the word out about this delicious breakfast at a very reasonable price. On November 24, Jim Vodde and Jorge Gomez became Sir Knights at the 4th Degree Exemplification in Orlando. Duncan Farney, Jack Dudzik, Ron Ruhle and myself also attended the exemplification. Along with State Dignitaries and Vice Supreme Master Bob Anderson in attendance, we were very honored that Supreme Master Dennis Stoddard was also there. Dennis oversees the entire 4th degree with over 300,000 Sir Knights worldwide. His comments at the exemplification included: The Fourth Degree is the part of the Knights of Columbus which fosters love of God and country. The potential for our Order is there, ready to be fulfilled through our efforts to foster patriotism and statesmanship. The Fourth Degree plays a vital role in re-invigorating society s patriotic renewal. Be active in your assembly and go forward from here as modern-day warriors for peace and moral principle. January 6 is Fellowship Sunday with the Knights hosting the event after each of the Sunday masses. The 3rd degree will be leading this with the 4th degree assisting including 2 Sir Knights in Regalia. Vivat Jesus, Bill Ingham, Faithful Navigator PAGE 4

CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE SISTERS NEEDING OUR PRAYERS Theresa Lennon Godelive Kalamba Bonnie Cummings Dolores Heitzman BROTHERS NEEDING OUR PRAYERS Dear Knights John Main Bill McCracken John Holtzhauser The month of January is always about beginnings. The old order passes and new opportunities await. I encourage you to make 2019 the very best of years by recommitting your time, talent and treasure to the good work of the order. The 2019 Diocese of St. Petersburg Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA) is upon us. As a community of faith, we have much for which to be thankful: for those who came before us and laid the foundation of our local Church; for those who serve now to bring Jesus Christ to all; and for those who will come after us to continue the mission. Thank you to brother Knights who participated in previous appeals. Thank you for prayerful consideration of sharing of your treasure now. MESSAGE BOARD Save The Date: January 31, 2019 Knight s Italian Dinner at the Conesa Center - Doors open at 5pm The menu features a choice of spaghetti with marina and meatballs, or spaghetti alfredo with chicken, salad, bruschetta, garlic bread and home made desserts. Last years event was a total sellout; we even turned folks away on the dinner day. Tickets are $12.00 each, and tables of 8 are available. Sales in the Conesa lobby begin on January 2nd. Support your council, bring your neighbors and friends. Volunteers will be needed to work this event. You can contact Mike Lane (207-797-7776), or Fred Kunkel (317-409-6543) for more information. Student Volunteers from Gannon University, who were a great help at our November Sock Hop FIELD AGENT Flexibility of Annuities/Two Types/ Funding Choices Knights of Columbus Insurance offers two types of annuities: a Deferred Annuity, as the name suggests, provides an income stream when you are ready to begin taking withdrawals; or an immediate annuity, with which you begin to receive payments soon after you make your initial investment. You also have a choice to fund your annuity either with a Single Premium (lump sum), or a Flexible Premium, which allows for payments on either a regular or irregular basis. If you want to explore the way that a KofC annuity may work into your retirement plan, contact me, I'd like to be of assistance. Fraternally, John Holtzhauser PAGE 6
