Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church April 12, 2015 We are called to celebrate the freedom Jesus won for us by His cross and resurrection. Today we join the universal People of God in singing Alleluia! Today is a day of Easter Joy. Painfully, we have walked with Jesus on the road to Calvary. We have been reminded that HE suffered and died for usthe innocent one for the sake of the guilty. HE has freed us from the power of sin and death. HE, who came forth from the tomb on that Easter morning over two thousand years ago, invites us to come forth from the tomb ourselves and live in the freedom He offers to us. He shows MERCY to all who call on Him! The old way is put to death in baptism. We rise from the waters of baptism as a new person, freed from the power of sin and death. When we baptize new members into our church, we pray that each new member will come to know Jesus and His love personally. As we come to know Him personally, we come to know that HE has a personal love for each of us. HE died for each of us and was raised up for each of us. Sin paralyzes. God s grace uplifts and frees us to love as Jesus loves - freely and unconditionally. So often we hold on to those things that keep us bound up in a cocoon rapped around us - a tomb of death from which we cannot break away. Our sinful habits or the unfortunate results of sin in our families or community paralyze us for months and sometimes years. We need the voice of Jesus calling us from the tomb, just as He did for His friend, Lazarus. Come out of that tomb! Our faith tells us that a new life begins each time we turn away from sin and selfishness and freely love following the example of Jesus. Let us resolve to make this Easter more than just a family day of friendship and fellowship. Let us resolve to make this Easter the day of our own personal freedom. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in his homily on the day of his installation as Bishop of Rome and Vicar of Christ, spoke about HOPE. Today, amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others. To protect creation, to protect every man and every woman, to look upon them with tenderness and love, is to open the horizon of hope. It is to let a shaft of light break through the heavy clouds. It is to bring the warmth of HOPE! God s Mercy has been extended to us in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus comes to His friends the night of the Resurrection and extends to them the greeting of Peace. There is mercy in our God, who knows us so well, and lifts us up in our frailty. Lord, free us from the sin that binds us. Let us live as Your children, freely loving You and one another, by following path of Your Son, Jesus. You freed Him from the power of sin and death! Call us forth from the tomb of selfishness and death today to the new life of your grace! Especially today, as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, let us remember that the words of Jesus inviting Peace into the lives of his friends applies to us as well! Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Robert J. Gallagher

CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH OFFERS THANKS FOR Deacon Walter Hanson In 1999, Walter Hansen, a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles at the time. Walter and Christine Hansen have been married for 39 years and have lived in Studio City for 25 of those years. Together they have raised four children: Tim, Carol, Judy and Michael. Walter was born in Chicago in 1940 and comes from a Norwegian background. During his formal education Walter was associated with a number of Religious Orders: the Brothers of Christian Schools, Jesuits, Redemptorists, and Vincentians. Walter s many years of education resulted with degrees in economics and accounting. He attended Loyola of Chicago, DePaul University, and Indiana University. He was also a student at USC. His academic background led to a Certification in Public Accounting, which he practiced for 30 years. Walter taught accounting and economics at National University, Pepperdine University, and California Lutheran University at various times. As a permanent deacon he has a special interest in justice issues and his knowledge of economics and accounting has given him a good insight into the teachings of the Church over many years in social justice issues. Walter has served here at St. Charles as our Parish Deacon, but he also has served as a Chaplain at the University Southern California Health Sciences Campus and Methodist Hospital. He was also Director of Deacons for the Archdiocese, Business Manager for St. Francis Xavier Parish, and was an assistant to the Episcopal Vicar for our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Region. Deacon Walter turned 75 years of age earlier in 2015 and submitted his intention to retire from such an active pace as a Deacon. He was graciously thanked by the Archbishop. We will be having a Reception in the Parish Hall after the 10 am Mass on Sunday, April 19. Deacon Walter will serve at that liturgy and say a few words. Deacon Walter will remain on our roster as a Retired Deacon but will also continue to help us at various liturgies. PLEASE STOP BY THE PARISH HALL ON SUNDAY, APRIL 19, AFTER THE 10 am MASS TO THANK DEACON WALTER FOR HIS GENEROUS SERVICE OF OUR CHURCH AND PARISH. THANK YOU DEACON WALTER!!!

RCIA CANDIDATES & CATECHUMENS I have always had a love for God and a belief in Jesus. I grew up going to a Christian church a couple of times a week until the time I was twelve. My dad died of a heart attack, and my mom was left raising three kids as a single mother. This left little time for her other than working and taking care of her children which made it to where we fell away from the church. I had brief periods of time where I was drawn back to church. I always had a misconception of the Catholic Church, thinking Catholics worshipped saints and things other than God. I met my fiancé in 2010 and as soon as we began to date she made it clear that faith and going to church were priorities in her life. Wanting to spend more time with her and having a genuine desire to understand Catholicism made my choice easy. We began to visit her parish frequently. I would always bombard her with questions and she would answer what she could and find answers for the questions she didn't know. I knew I would have to make some changes in order to marry in the church and after my first visit to St. Charles RCIA, I knew there was a much more important reason for me to keep coming back. I never thought that my efforts to advance my growing relationship with my fiancé was also God s way of inviting me back to him. I find so much joy in the realization that not only am I deserving of God s love and forgiveness, but I yearn for more each week. I look forward to my Tuesday night classes and Sunday mornings with my new family at RCIA. Thank you St. Charles for putting such great people in place as the team members in the RCIA program. I look forward to God unveiling more of what his plan is for me!
