THE FOURTH OF JULY PARADE This year s Fourth of July parade honored the return and burial of PFC Aaron Toppen to Mokena. Private First Class Toppen was killed in an erroneous bombing attack in Afghanistan. The parade and funeral are remembered below:. The VFW led the parade The knights honored Private Toppen Coming home from Midway Airport The line at the wake was three hours long Leaving the church for the funeral Arrival at St John s cemetery The funeral procession to St John s Cemetery took over an hour to pass Front Street. Metra stopped all trains to permit the procession to travel freely. Vivat Jesus

Jeff Ryba KNIGHT OF THE QUARTER FAMILY OF THE QUARTER Among the great unsung heroes of our council are Mark Welch and his wife Laura. Mark is the brains behind the annual Turtle Race, putting in endless hours of work to arrange venues that will permit ticket sales, arranging for Mark Welch workers to man those venues and the conducting the race. This major fund raiser for our council has been in the good hands of Mark and Laura for several years now with really great results. Mark and Laura s selection as Family of the Quarter is richly deserved since their actions are always in the highest traditions of the Knights of Columbus. One of our newest members has provided inspiration and enthusiasm to the council that is rarely seen. Jeff Ryba is a spark plug for the organization who volunteered to take over the road cleanup operation and who enlists his wife Michele and his young daughter in everything that we do. The Rybas have been enthusiastically present at all our council activities. A new member who jumps to the front of the pack and takes charge is rare. Jeff has been selected as the Knight of the Quarter because he clearly deserves the recognition. We expect to see a lot more from Jeff and his family in the future. His presence in Council 6993 is a wonderful addition to our council and to the Knights of Columbus. Jeff is making changes to the road cleanup process by arranging a contribution to the council for each participant and by arranging for refreshments. It is important that you call Jeff if you will be participating on August 16. See the flyer on page 7 of this newsletter. The Feast of Corpus Christi St Joseph Church in Rockdale holds an annual procession with a monstrance containing the body of Christ to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. Again this year, on June 22, an honor guard of Sir Knights from the Joliet Assembly led the way. Public processions such as the Rockdale event are in the highest traditions of the Church. As we defend the faith as knights, it is important to make public expressions of the Catholic Faith. We should all pray openly in public, wear the symbols of our faith and order proudly and serve as Christian examples to our fellow citizens. These things matter a great deal. Vivat Jesus

The assembly deadline for all paper work is August 15. All forms and checks must be in the hands of Tim Cosgrove, Faithful Comptroller of the Joliet Assembly by that date. Submit the form at left with your check and a properly filled out Form 4 by August 15 for submission to the Master. Send your applications to: Mr. Tim Cosgrove 1026 Stonegate Road New Lenox, IL 60451 Phone: (815) 485 5599 Cell: (815) 483 0548 Email: sox1985@att.net

Any knight who has completed his initiation into the order as a Third Degree knight is eligible to join the Fourth Degree. There are no requirements for length of time as a member of the order.
