HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? Let's not be too hasty in defining who is "the wicked one" and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don't like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don't like to be reproached for our transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don't like? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The Mass consists in some sense of two parts, namely the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. (GIRM 28) Preparing for Mass: Do you fully participate in the Mass? Attending the Entire Mass: The Church mandates that: The faithful are to be recommended not to omit to make a proper thanksgiving after Communion. They may do this during the celebration with a period of silence, with a hymn, psalm, or other song of praise, or also after the celebration, if possible by staying behind to pray for a suitable time (Inaestimabile Donum 17). Leaving Early: Leaving right after receiving Holy Communion is actually disrespectful. Attending Mass is not like going through a drive-thru where you can pick up a reading to go and grab the Eucharist before walking out the church doors. A person should not approach the table of the bread of the Lord without having first been at the table of His word. The Mass is something we celebrate together as Church. We celebrate as a worshipping assembly united to Christ through the priest. It is not just something we do as individual Christians. In the same manner, our thanksgiving for Mass cannot be reduced to the individual sphere and must be carried out as Church. This collective thanksgiving is done through the priest at the closing prayer to which all respond "Amen." Finally, the Mass is intimately united to Christian life and mission. The final blessing and dismissal send us forth to transmit what we have received to our brothers and sisters. If we leave directly after Communion, then we lose this important component of our spiritual life.
