Enjoying God s Fellowship Sermon Demonstrative Love Pastor Bill Evans Sermon text: Romans 16:1-16 1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, 2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well. 3 Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. 5 Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia. 6 Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners. They are well known to the apostles, and they were in Christ before me. 8 Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus. 11 Greet my kinsman Herodion. Offertory He Will Rejoice Over You The Lord our God is with you. He is mighty to save. The Lord will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love. He will rejoice over you. He will rejoice over you. If you could only hear his voice. You would hear the Lord rejoice. Rejoicing over you with singing. 1977 Integrity Music, New Spring Publishing Scott Wesley Brown/David Hampton 9
Gathering Song Days of Elijah These are the days of Elijah, Declaring the word of the Lord: And these are the days of Your servant Moses, Righteousness being restored. And though these are days of great trials, Of famine and darkness and sword, Still, we are the voice in the desert crying Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Refrain: Behold He comes riding on the clouds, Shining like the sun at the trumpet call; Lift your voice, it s the year of jubilee, And out of Zion s hill salvation comes. These are the days of Ezekiel, The dry bones becoming as flesh; And these are the days of Your servant David, Rebuilding a temple of praise. These are the days of the harvest, The fields are as white in Your world, And we are the labourers in Your vineyard, Declaring the word of the Lord! There s no God like Jehovah. There s no God like Jehovah! By Robin Mark 10
Song of Response Blest Be the Tie Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above, is like to that above. Before the Father s throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares, our comforts and our cares. We share each other s woes, our mutual burdens bear, and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear, the sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again, and hope to meet again. This glorious hope revives our courage on the way; while each in expectation lives and longs to see the day, and longs to see the day. From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin, we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity, through all eternity. Text by John Fawcett, Music by Bethany Brooks 11
Hymn of Praise Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Joyful joyful we adore Thee, God of glory Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, Opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest vale and mountain, Flowery meadow flashing sea; Chanting bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father Christ our Brother, All who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine. Mortals join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o'er us, Brother love binds man to man. Ever singing march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music lifts us sunward In the triumph song of life. Sending Song Come People of the Risen King Come people of the Risen King, Who delight to bring Him praise; Come all, and tune your hearts to sing To the Morning Star of grace. From the shifting shadows of the earth, We will lift our eyes to Him, Where steady arms of mercy reach, To gather children in. (Chorus) Rejoice, rejoice! Let ev ry tongue rejoice! One heart, one voice; O Church of Christ, rejoice! Come those whose joy is morning sun, And those weeping through the night; Come those who tell of battles won, And those struggling in the fight. For His perfect love will never change, And His mercies never cease, But follow us through all our days, With certain home of peace. Come young and old from ev ry land, Men and women of the faith; Come those with full or empty hands Find the riches of His grace. Over all the world, His people sing Shore to shore we hear them call The truth that cries in ev ry age, Our God is all in all. Reflection & Preparation Reflection: Romans 16:1-16 This Week: Prayer: Quote We are to love one another, forgive one another, pray for one another, edify one another, and so on. These make it plain that our spiritual health depends on one another: both what other believers do for us and what we do for them. The larger concept that includes all those one-anotherings is the concept of fellowship. (John Frame, The Doctrine of the Christian Life, pg. 918-919) Micah 4:1-5 Come, Let Us Go Up John 13:31-35 A New Commandment I Give You 1 John 2:1-11 Whoever Loves His Brother Abides in the Light Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, even as You and He are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with You, with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore. Amen. (Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer) In Preparation for Sunday: Romans 16:17-23 14
