From Fr. Simon Like a shepherd He feeds his flock and gathers the lambs in His arms, holding them carefully close to His heart, leading them home - is the refrain of a hymn that is based on Isaiah 40:11 which echoes a common theme in the Scriptures. Abel was a shepherd and so was King David. The kings of Israel are considered shepherds who, as we hear in the reading from Jeremiah this weekend, have failed in their responsibility of pastoring the flock entrusted to their care. In the New Testament, St. Paul advises Timothy and Titus of the qualities of a good leader and St. Peter exhorts the elders of the community to be shepherds after the heart of the eternal shepherd Jesus Christ. The Scriptures highlight three tasks of a shepherd to lead, to feed and to tend. As your pastor, I am honored to have been entrusted with the tasks of leading, feeding and tending to the needs of the faith community of Queen of All Saints. To help me in my leadership role, I am deeply aware that I am blessed by the legacy, wisdom and counsel of my predecessors who have faithfully shepherded the flock here at Queen of All Saints. I have inherited and rely upon the support of an able, generous and committed parish staff, that of our parish, school and finance councils and that of the membership and leadership provided by the numerous parish organizations of our parish. It is my responsibility to make sure that the sheep under my care are fed, nourished, and nurtured by the Word of God, through the celebration of the Sacraments and other faith formation initiatives in the parish. A good shepherd weans his sheep from the elemental principles of milk that is given to babes, and offers the flock a diet that will help it become strong and fully equipped to do the ministry of the Gospel. Finally, it is my responsibility to tend to the needs of the community, especially the needs of those in pain whether the pain be physical, mental or spiritual. The following story is something that has been with me for a very long time. Very early in my priesthood, I happened to read a conversation between a young priest and a saintly old priest. The older priest was over eighty, nearly blind, but widely sought out and respected, especially as a confessor. One night, alone with him, the young priest asked him this question: If you had your priesthood to live over again, would you do anything differently? From a man so full of integrity, he had fully expected that there would be no regrets. The answer surprised the young priest. Yes, he did have a regret, a major one. He said: If I had my priesthood to do over again, I would be easier on people the next time. I wouldn t be so stingy with God s mercy, with the sacraments, with forgiveness. You see what was drilled into me was the phrase The truth will set you free, and I believed that it was my responsibility to challenge people so as to protect something inside of them. That s good. But I fear that I ve been too hard on people. They have pain enough without me. I should have risked God s mercy more! I am grateful for the support I have received thus far. Please keep in mind that although I am in the role of pastor, I too am one of the flock. Please keep me in your prayers. Blessings! 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 22, 2018 come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile. MARK 6:31 Do you spend time, every day, alone and in silence listening to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some alone time with God. Stewardship of our Facilities It s a never ending task to maintain a vigilant inspection program and to make necessary maintenance and repairs to the physical plant which has been entrusted to us by prior generations. For example, here are the west transept windows of the Basilica, where years of fierce Chicago weather have deteriorated the supports and caulking of the stained glass windows to the point where they needed to be removed and reset. Maintenance is not an option. It is a necessity. It is what we owe to those who came before us and is how we provide for those who will come after us. Your financial support allows us to maintain a legacy for the future. July 5 to 11, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $14,315.34 478 Loose Donation $4,051.00 n/a Online Giving $7,229.88 142 Total $25,596.22 YTD Total $52,605.26 Our Basilica Repair Work Continues Please keep this in mind when you consider your level of support for our parish. We have now completed work on replacing the ceiling above the choir loft. This required a special scaffolding as well as the disassembling of the organ itself. The organ is now in full service and we can once again fully appreciate this magnificent part of our music ministry. We began repairs of some water damage around the transept windows starting the week of July 9, to include replacing the caulk around the windows as well as repairs to some of the support rods holding the windows in place (See photo at left). The windows along the side aisles will also require some repairs, which will be scheduled over the next few years. The deteriorated marble behind the side altars has been removed and will be replaced with a modern lightweight replacement material similar to what was used in the sanctuary behind the main altar a few years ago. Currently there is a temporary substitute in place until all exterior stone work is completed. Work on the bell tower will begin later this year. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish website at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Are you receiving our monthly parish newsletter? It s a great way to keep track of the many opportunities in which we can participate in the worship ministries, social activities, and stewardship opportunities of our parish life. If it is not possible for you to come to the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but also for the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not just a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him or her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age may properly receive this sacrament. Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 22, 2018 9
